What can a cat DNA test tell you about breed?
A breed result is best read as a similarity estimate, not a pedigree certificate. Basepaws explains that its analysis compares a cat’s DNA with modern breed references. It says the test does not verify breed or determine purebred status, and that similarity to a breed reference does not necessarily mean the cat descended from a pedigreed cat. That distinction matters especially for mixed-breed cats. A report may identify genetic patterns resembling those in a reference population, but the advertised breed count alone does not show how accurately the company can assign ancestry to any particular cat. What do the health results mean?
Both companies advertise screening for genetic health conditions, but a flagged result should be treated as information to discuss with a veterinarian—not as a diagnosis.
