Sipho, a kitten with neurological feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), gradually regained strength and confidence while receiving care at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. Best Friends says he began playing hide-and-seek and seeking affection as he recovered. His story is one cat’s experience, not a treatment guide.
How Sipho and his family were found
In a story published March 9, 2026, Best Friends Animal Society said Sipho, his littermates, and their mother were found hiding under a trailer at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. The organization reported that all seven kittens and their mother had FIP. That is the count in this particular family, not a statistic about how common FIP is.

Sipho had the neurological form of the disease. The story says it affected his movement and coordination, making it difficult for him to stand, walk, and play.
What Best Friends reports about his care
The Sanctuary veterinary team had experience treating FIP, according to Best Friends. Sipho, his mother, and siblings began daily medication, followed by months of treatment and monitoring. The story does not name the medication or give a dose or clinical protocol, so it cannot be used to guide treatment for another cat.

From hiding under a trailer to playing hide-and-seek
As Sipho regained strength and confidence, he found a hiding place under another cat’s bedding. What “no-kill” means in Best Friends’ story
Best Friends presents its Faces of No-Kill series as stories of pets who lost their homes and are thriving after shelters and communities found ways to save them. The organization defines no-kill as saving every shelter dog and cat who can be saved, while taking community safety and a good quality of life for pets into account. This is Best Friends’ description of its mission.
The organization says shelter teams need community participation and points to fostering, adoption, and advocacy as ways people can help. Prewett describes FIP survivors as cats who may need additional support but still offer companionship: “Cats who have FIP and FIP survivors are just like any other cat — they just might need a little extra support,” Riley says. “But they bring just as much joy, love, and affection.”
