Therapy dogs may support companionship and social interaction, but a clinical therapy program is not the same as an informal animal visit—and neither guarantees a medical benefit. Good care and respectful contact begin with the same principle: attend to the individual animal’s needs and give it room to choose.
What is a therapy dog?
The label is often used loosely. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) notes that “therapy dog” can refer to animals taking part in animal-assisted activities, such as visits intended to enhance quality of life. In a clinical context, animal-assisted therapy is more specific: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines it as “a goal-directed intervention that incorporates an animal into the treatment process provided by a credentialed therapist.” A therapy dog working toward treatment goals may, for example, be part of a plan supervised by an occupational therapist or psychologist.

That distinction matters: a friendly visit and a clinician-directed intervention have different purposes, oversight, and expectations. AAHA’s 2021 guidelines for working, assistance, and therapy dogs also emphasize that these dogs have varied roles and physical demands, making primary veterinary care important.
How might therapy dogs help—and what is known about the evidence?
Dogs can offer companionship and may help relieve stress or anxiety. Animal visits can also create opportunities for social interaction. Those possible benefits should not be mistaken for proof that a dog will treat a condition, speed recovery, or produce a predictable health outcome. The CDC says evidence for benefits of animals in healthcare settings is largely anecdotal or observational; a particular clinical effect size is not established here.

For that reason, it is more accurate to describe animal-assisted programs as potentially supportive than to promise a medical result. If a visit is part of treatment, the goal and the credentialed professional’s role should be clear.
What safeguards do healthcare animal visits need?
A visit should be planned around both the people receiving care and the animal. The CDC’s infection-control guidance for animals in healthcare facilities recommends healthy, clean, well-groomed animals that are vaccinated against zoonotic diseases, with trained handlers and experienced direction. Handlers should understand the animal’s health and behavior and know how to conduct activities safely.

Access to an individual patient’s room is a case-by-case decision. The CDC recommends consultation with attending physicians and nursing staff, as well as the patient’s consent. Staff should consider allergies, asthma, phobias, animal-care arrangements, and infection-control practices. A visit that is welcome and suitable for one patient may not be appropriate for another.

What toys are safe for cats?
Play can encourage exercise and cognitive enrichment while letting cats stalk, pounce, and problem-solve. Cornell’s Feline Health Center explains these benefits in its guidance on keeping cats indoors. A cat wand toy is one optional way to engage a cat in interactive play; no particular type or product will suit every cat.

How do I pet a dog safely?
When meeting someone else’s dog, let the owner and the dog set the pace. The CDC’s dog-safety guidance recommends this sequence:

- Ask the owner before reaching toward the dog.
- Let the dog approach you; remain still as it does.
- Give the dog a chance to see and sniff you before you pet it.
- Stop if the dog seems scared, sick, or angry.
Do not disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies. Permission from the owner does not mean the dog wants contact; watch its response and give it space.
How can I tell if my cat wants to be petted?
International Cat Care’s C-A-T approach makes the interaction easier to read: Choice—did the cat choose to engage? Attention—are you noticing signs of discomfort? Touch—where are you touching, and does the cat want you to continue? Many cats tolerate contact around the cheeks, chin, and head, but preferences vary. Let the cat move away rather than holding it in place.
Signs that a cat may be uncomfortable include tail lashing, dilated pupils, and ears moving backward. Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes these as possible warning signs of petting-induced aggression, in which a cat becomes irritated during petting. Stop when you see them; do not force further contact or restrain the cat. Sudden defensiveness can also be related to pain. Avoid touching a painful area and consult a veterinarian about pain or a sudden behavior change.
Why does my cat bite me when I pet her?
A bite during petting can happen when a cat has become uncomfortable or irritated, but it does not identify the cause by itself. Watch for changes such as tail lashing, ears moving back, or dilated pupils, and end the interaction as soon as discomfort appears. Give the cat the option to leave instead of trying to hold or soothe it with more petting.
If the behavior is new, happens when a particular area is touched, or seems linked to pain, arrange a veterinary evaluation. Avoid touching the suspected painful spot in the meantime.
