Ruby was repeatedly returned to a Rhode Island shelter because adopters struggled with her behavior and energy. A second chance with Rhode Island State Police Corporal Dan O’Neil led to a search-and-rescue career—and, in 2017, to a life-saving search for the teenage son of the shelter worker who had fought to keep Ruby alive.
Ruby was not an obvious candidate for a police K-9. The Australian shepherd–border collie mix had been surrendered to the Rhode Island SPCA as a young dog, repeatedly adopted, and repeatedly returned because adopters struggled with her behavior and energy. Yet that same drive eventually helped make her a search-and-rescue dog with the Rhode Island State Police.

In 2017, Ruby and her handler, Rhode Island State Police Corporal Daniel O’Neil, were sent to help search for a missing teenage boy. After roughly eight hours, Ruby found him barely alive. The rescue became extraordinary for another reason: the boy’s mother was Patricia Inman, the shelter worker who had fought years earlier to give Ruby another chance.
Ruby’s difficult beginning at the shelter
Ruby’s early history is a reminder that “difficult” does not always mean “without potential.” At the Rhode Island SPCA, she was described as a high-energy dog with behavioral challenges. Families adopted her and brought her back, apparently unable to manage the traits that made her a poor fit for their homes.

Patricia Inman, a shelter worker, saw a different possibility. Rather than viewing Ruby’s intensity only as a problem, Inman believed it might be redirected into a job. She advocated for Ruby when the dog’s future was uncertain, including when euthanasia was being considered.
That did not mean Ruby was suitable for every household or that every energetic shelter dog can become a working police dog. Search-and-rescue K-9s must possess the right combination of drive, trainability, physical ability, focus, and temperament. They also need specialized training and a professional handler. Ruby’s outcome was unusual—but it began with someone willing to evaluate her potential instead of stopping at her shelter record.
How Corporal Dan O’Neil and Ruby became a K-9 team
Corporal Daniel O’Neil of the Rhode Island State Police needed a partner for search-and-rescue work and agreed to take a chance on Ruby. The partnership required persistence. Public accounts describe a lengthy training process, and reporting from CBS noted that Ruby took substantially longer than an ordinary dog to become a certified K-9.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The important point is not a particular number of training months—published accounts do not establish one consistent figure—but the sustained work behind the certification. O’Neil and Ruby had to build communication, reliability, and the skills required for missing-person searches. In 2011, the Rhode Island Ethics Commission identified O’Neil as a member of the Rhode Island State Police K-9 Unit.
Ruby’s success also depended on the setting. A professional search-and-rescue program could turn her energy into a focused task, while O’Neil could provide the structure and training she needed. Her story should not be used to promise that a shelter dog will automatically thrive as a police K-9, but it does show why behavior should be assessed in context.

The 2017 search that brought the story full circle
Ruby’s most famous rescue happened in 2017. The Rhode Island Ethics Commission recorded that O’Neil and Ruby were dispatched to assist the Glocester Police Department in searching for a missing teenage boy.
After approximately eight hours, Ruby located the boy. He was barely alive and was taken to a hospital. American Humane’s account says he made a full recovery.
Then came the extraordinary connection: the boy was Patricia Inman’s son. The shelter worker who had argued that Ruby deserved another opportunity was now the mother of the person Ruby had helped find.
That connection is not simply a dramatic detail added for a movie. It appears in the Rhode Island Ethics Commission’s account of the rescue and in American Humane’s account of Ruby’s history. It is the defining reversal in the story: the dog once considered too difficult to place became the search partner who helped save the family of the person who had refused to give up on her.
Ruby’s American Humane award
In 2018, American Humane honored Ruby as its Search and Rescue American Hero Dog. That is an American Humane award designation—not a governmental medal or a universal title for every search-and-rescue dog.

Readers who want the broader account can look for Dogwinks: True Stories of Dogs and the Miracles They Perform, by SQuire Rushnell and Louise DuArt. The official publisher material includes the Ruby and O’Neil story, including Ruby’s shelter history and the later rescue involving Inman’s son.
Dogwinks is the most direct book recommendation for this story because it is not merely a general book about dogs or training; it contains the account associated with Ruby’s remarkable second chance. Availability and editions can vary by retailer.
What Rescued by Ruby changes—and what it does not
Ruby’s story was adapted into Rescued by Ruby, a Netflix film released in 2022. Netflix describes the movie as based on a true story and lists Grant Gustin, Scott Wolf, and Kaylah Zander among its cast.
The film is an adaptation, not a documentary transcript. That means the central elements—the shelter dog, O’Neil’s partnership with Ruby, the search for Inman’s son, and Ruby’s rescue career—can be treated as the supported foundation of the story, while individual scenes, dialogue, timing, and character details may have been dramatized for the screen.

Contemporary reporting also noted that a trained shelter dog named Bear portrayed Ruby, with another dog used as a stunt double. That is a behind-the-scenes detail about the production, not evidence that the real Ruby performed every action shown in the film.

Ruby’s experience offers a valuable lesson without requiring an exaggerated “any dog can do anything” conclusion. A behavior that is difficult in a typical home may be useful in a carefully selected working environment. High energy can become stamina; intense interest can become focus; persistence can become determination.
But the transformation requires more than goodwill. It requires an appropriate match, expert evaluation, extensive training, a capable handler, and a role suited to the individual dog. Most shelter dogs should not be expected to become police K-9s, and most adopters should not try to reproduce professional working-dog training on their own.
The narrower and more durable lesson is this: a shelter history does not tell the whole story. Ruby needed someone to recognize a possibility, a handler prepared to do the work, and an institution able to evaluate and train her. Together, those factors turned a repeatedly returned dog into a working search-and-rescue partner—and eventually into the dog who helped save the son of her earliest advocate.
