The animal is the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), and its “pockets” are not pockets at all. They are the female’s abdominal pouch, or marsupium—a specialized nursery where her extraordinarily underdeveloped newborns continue growing after birth.

That unusual beginning explains both the opossum’s famous pouch and the heart-melting sight of older babies clinging to their mother’s back. The Virginia opossum is the only living marsupial native to the United States, giving North America its own pouch-bearing mammal despite the fact that most people associate marsupials with kangaroos, koalas, and wombats.
Why opossum babies need a pouch
A Virginia opossum’s pregnancy lasts only about 12 to 13 days. That is remarkably short for a mammal, and it means the young are born before most of their development is complete.

Newborn opossums are tiny, hairless, and extremely vulnerable. They are not miniature, fully formed opossums ready to follow their mother. Their forelimbs, however, are developed enough to help them make an astonishing journey: immediately after birth, each newborn must crawl from the birth canal across its mother’s body and into her pouch.
Once inside, a baby finds a nipple and attaches to it. The nipple swells in the young animal’s mouth, helping keep it secured while it nurses and develops. The pouch protects the babies from the outside environment during a stage when they would otherwise be unable to survive on their own.
The pouch is a nursery—and not every baby makes it
A female may give birth to more babies than she can successfully nurse. Reports put the number of newborns in a litter at roughly four to 25, while a female generally has about 13 mammae, and some of those may not function. In practical terms, access to a working nipple can determine which young remain attached and continue developing.

That is an important detail behind the adorable image. The pouch is not simply a roomy carrying case for a guaranteed group of babies. It is a demanding survival stage, and not every newborn reaches the pouch or survives long enough to leave it.

The young that do attach typically remain in the pouch for approximately 50 to 70 days. During that time, they complete a major part of their early growth while nursing and staying close to their mother’s body.
What happens after the babies leave the pouch?
Leaving the pouch does not mean the mother’s job is over. Young opossums may ride on her back as she forages at night, creating the familiar—and exceptionally cute—image of a mother covered with clinging babies. They may also remain in a den while she searches for food.
The young begin eating solid food at around 85 days and are generally weaned between approximately 93 and 105 days. Their development therefore unfolds in stages: first attached inside the pouch, then riding on the mother or waiting in a den, and finally becoming more independent.

America’s pouch-bearing wild mammal
The species behind this story is specifically the Virginia opossum. “Possum” is commonly used as shorthand in the United States, but the shorter word can cause confusion because Australasian possums are different animals. Other opossum species also live farther south in the Americas, so the most accurate claim is that the Virginia opossum is the only living marsupial in the United States—and commonly described as North America’s only living marsupial.
It is also an adaptable animal. Virginia opossums are generally nocturnal, solitary, and omnivorous. Depending on what is available, they may eat fruit, vegetables, insects, small animals, eggs, and carrion. They can live in wooded areas, thickets, wetlands, and places near human communities.
A tail that helps it maneuver
The Virginia opossum has a long, prehensile tail. It can use the tail for balance and grasping as it moves through its surroundings. The animal also has a clawless, opposable digit on each hind foot, an adaptation that helps it grip and maneuver.
These features contribute to the opossum’s slightly unusual appearance. It may not look like the polished cartoon version of a cute animal, but its combination of a pale face, whiskers, bare tail, grasping feet, and pouch-carrying babies makes it one of North America’s most distinctive mammals.

What “playing possum” really means
When a Virginia opossum is overwhelmed by severe stress, it may enter the defensive state known as “playing possum.” The phrase can make the response sound like a deliberate performance, but the state is generally described as an involuntary, catatonic or shock-like reaction.
An opossum may hiss or show other defensive behaviors before becoming still. It may also release a foul-smelling substance. The response is not an invitation to approach, touch, or test the animal. If you encounter a wild opossum, give it space and follow local wildlife guidance rather than trying to handle, feed, bait, or capture it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the pouch is genuinely adorable
The sweet part of the story is not that opossums have magical storage compartments. It is that the pouch solves an extraordinary developmental problem. A mother gives birth after an exceptionally brief pregnancy, and her tiny young must make their own difficult climb to a safe place. Once there, they attach to her and continue developing under her protection.
Later, when they are large enough to leave the pouch but still dependent, they ride on her back while she searches for food. The sequence—from fragile newborns, to pouch-dwellers, to back-riding youngsters—is why this often-overlooked wild animal earns the “cute” title.

A Virginia opossum’s pregnancy lasts approximately 12 to 13 days. The young are born extremely underdeveloped and complete much of their early development in the mother’s pouch.
Do all baby opossums survive in the pouch?
No. A female may give birth to four to 25 young, but she generally has about 13 mammae, and some may not function. Not every newborn reaches the pouch or survives.
Is playing possum a deliberate act?
No. “Playing possum” is generally an involuntary catatonic or shock-like defensive response to severe stress, not a conscious performance. A wild opossum should be given plenty of space.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The Virginia opossum has “pockets” because females have a pouch where their extremely underdeveloped young attach to nipples and continue growing. After leaving the pouch, the babies may ride on their mother’s back until they are ready for greater independence.
