That is an astonishing perspective, but “inside the shark” needs a precise definition here. The available reporting supports the camera being in the shark’s mouth—not being swallowed, entering the digestive tract, or traveling through the animal’s body. There is no evidence that the shark digested the camera or carried it internally after the encounter.
“Steals” works as a dramatic headline, but the shark was not stealing in the human sense. It most likely investigated, bit, or briefly grabbed an unfamiliar object. Tiger sharks are opportunistic feeders and are known for investigating objects with their mouths, but the footage alone cannot establish the animal’s precise motivation.
Who filmed the encounter?
Reports identify the diver as Andrea Ramos Nascimento. The incident took place at Tiger Beach, a well-known tiger-shark diving location near Freeport in the Bahamas, on February 9, 2025.

The camera was an Insta360 X4
The camera identified in reporting was an Insta360 X4 in underwater housing. Because the X4 records a 360-degree image, the camera can capture an unusually broad view even when its position changes suddenly. That helps explain why the footage shows both the shark’s mouth and glimpses of the water outside it.

The model identification is useful equipment context, not proof that the camera is shark-proof. This particular encounter does not amount to a durability test, and no camera should be deliberately placed near a shark’s jaws.
Why underwater housing matters
Insta360’s specifications distinguish between shallow-water protection and a purpose-built dive setup:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Without a dive case: the X4 is rated IPX8 waterproof to 10 meters.
- With the X4 Invisible Dive Case: Insta360 documents operation down to 50 meters and recommends the case for improved underwater stitching.
Those are two different issues. A camera may be waterproof at a particular depth while still producing imperfect 360-degree images underwater. Water bends light differently from air, which can interfere with the seamless stitching that makes a 360-degree camera’s view look continuous. The specialized housing is designed to address that underwater refraction problem as well as provide deeper-water protection.
The reported camera was in an underwater casing, but the available information does not establish that the housing alone explains why the equipment continued recording after contact with the shark. Water pressure, impact, sand, seals, lens covers, and whether the case was closed correctly can all affect underwater equipment.
What comes with the official dive case?

- Anti-fog inserts
- A 1/4-inch mounting adapter
- A thumb screw
- Anti-slip rings
- A protective pouch
- A wrench
- A lens cloth
For ordinary snorkeling or diving, anti-fog inserts can be particularly practical. Condensation inside a housing can ruin otherwise usable footage. Inserts are a consumable accessory, however, not a guarantee against leaks or damage. Users should follow the manufacturer’s instructions, inspect seals, keep the housing clean, and close it away from sand and grit.
Could a shark damage a camera even if it survives?
Absolutely. A recording that continues after an encounter does not mean the equipment is undamaged. A shark’s bite can scratch a lens, crack a housing, deform a mounting point, damage buttons, or compromise a seal for later dives. Salt water can also cause problems if it reaches the camera or housing.
After any serious underwater impact, a diver should:
- Move away from the animal and regain control of the equipment without making another approach.
- Rinse the exterior with fresh water as soon as practical, following the housing manufacturer’s care instructions.
- Check the lens, case, latches, seals, mounts, and controls for visible damage.
- Back up the footage before attempting further use.
- Perform a controlled leak check before taking the camera into valuable or deep-water conditions again.
A housing that looks intact can still have a damaged seal. If there is any doubt, replacing the seal or having the equipment inspected is safer than relying on a single successful recording.
Why this view is so unusual
Most shark footage is filmed from the side, above, or at a cautious distance. This clip reverses that perspective: the camera is briefly positioned where the shark’s prey would be, looking outward through the opening of its jaws.

The smaller size makes them easier to conceal from theft/vandalism, and also much easier to carry out into the field.
The result is visually dramatic because several details appear in one shot:
- The shark’s teeth and mouth interior are close to the lens.
- The mouth opens and exposes the water outside.
- The 360-degree camera preserves a broad view despite the sudden movement.
- The camera keeps recording long enough to document the encounter before being released.
That unusual viewpoint should not be confused with evidence of unusual shark behavior. The video shows a brief interaction with an object; it does not prove that the shark intentionally wanted the camera, recognized it as prey, or attempted to swallow it.
Should people try to recreate the shot?
No. Do not offer a camera, dive gear, food, or any other object to a shark to obtain close-up footage. Deliberately provoking contact can injure the animal, put divers at risk, damage expensive equipment, and encourage unsafe wildlife tourism.
People filming sharks should follow the instructions of qualified local guides and applicable wildlife rules. Keep equipment secured, avoid sudden pursuit or blocking the animal’s path, and treat the shark as a wild animal rather than a performer. The safest memorable footage is footage obtained without forcing an interaction.

Bottom line
The viral clip shows a tiger shark at Tiger Beach in the Bahamas briefly taking Andrea Ramos Nascimento’s Insta360 X4 into its mouth. The camera captured a remarkable view of the teeth and oral cavity before the shark released it. It did not, based on the available evidence, travel through the shark’s body—and the footage is not a reason to test whether any camera or housing can withstand a shark bite.
