This Robot Companion Is a Cameraman for Your Pet—but Vex Isn’t Verified for Sale Yet

FrontierX Vex is designed to follow your cat or dog, film from a low angle, and create AI-edited highlights—but it remains a CES 2026 development-stage concept, not a verified retail product.

FrontierX Vex is designed to be a moving cameraman for your cat or dog. The small spherical robot is intended to follow a pet through the home, film from a low angle, and use AI to turn the day’s clips into short highlights. But Vex was presented in CES 2026-era reporting as a development-stage concept—not a verified retail product with a confirmed price, shipping date, or public sample reel.

FrontierX Vex is designed to be a moving cameraman for your cat or dog. Unlike a conventional pet camera that waits for an animal to enter its frame, the small spherical robot is intended to follow a pet around the home, film from a low angle, and use artificial intelligence to assemble the day’s clips into short highlights.

There is an important catch: Vex was presented in CES 2026-era reporting as a development-stage concept, not as a verified retail product. No final price, shipping geography, production specification sheet, independent test, or public example reel has been established in the research reviewed for this article.

What is the FrontierX Vex pet robot?

Vex is described as a compact white sphere with short limbs, ears, and accessory-like details. Its small, playful appearance is intended to feel less intimidating to household pets than a large wheeled robot or a camera mounted high on a wall.

#1 Best Overall
Tapo 1080P Indoor Security Camera, Baby Monitor, Dog Camera, Wired, C100 | Motion Detection, 2-Way Audio, Siren, Night Vision, Cloud & SD Card Storage, Works w/Alexa & Google Home
  • ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
  • EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
  • PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
  • VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
  • FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.

The idea is more ambitious than remote pet monitoring. Vex is meant to act as an autonomous pet camera and video editor:

  • It identifies and tracks a particular cat or dog using computer vision.
  • It moves through indoor spaces instead of remaining at one viewing angle.
  • It records from close to the animal’s height, producing a more pet-level perspective.
  • It gathers clips throughout the day and is intended to turn them into a short narrative or highlight reel.
  • It has also been described as being able to play with the pet, although detailed interaction features have not been published.

Those are reported goals and product claims, not results from independent testing. There is currently no basis for promising that Vex will reliably follow every pet, avoid every obstacle, or create entertaining footage in every home.

How Vex is supposed to work

1. It recognizes the pet

Vex is reported to use computer vision to identify and follow a specific cat or dog. That raises practical questions that have not yet been answered: Can it distinguish two similar-looking pets? Can an owner select which animal to follow? What happens when the pet leaves the room or another animal crosses the camera’s path?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. It follows instead of waiting

A fixed camera can show what happens in one room, but it cannot follow a dog from the living room to the kitchen or capture a cat’s activity from a new angle. Vex’s central promise is autonomous movement through the home, allowing the camera to travel with the animal.

That is also the feature most dependent on real-world performance. Homes contain furniture, cables, rugs, toys, stairs, water bowls, children, and other pets. Until FrontierX publishes safety and navigation specifications—or independent testing becomes available—it is better to view Vex’s mobility as an appealing concept rather than a proven capability.

3. It films from the pet’s level

Most indoor pet cameras look down from a shelf, wall, or ceiling. Vex is intended to record from near floor level, potentially producing more intimate footage of a dog exploring a room or a cat investigating something unfamiliar.

  • 【Up, Down, All Around】This Pan/Tilt IP camera see everything across an entire room or walkway with the 360° horizontal and 114° vertical range pan/tilt field of view.
  • 【Secure Local or Cloud Storage】Save footage continuously on up to a 512 GB microSD card (not included) or subscribe to Tapo Care for cloud storage which saves 30-day video history and provides additional benefits such as motion tracking, baby crying detection, and more. [Before purchasing a microSD card, please check the TP-Link website FAQ to ensure compatibility with your device.]
  • 【Detection & Instant Notification】Get instant push notifications when motion, person or baby crying is detected, there is no additional fee to use it as a baby camera monitor. Discern from notifications that matter, so you'll know if its your pet playing around or if someone is actually there.
  • 【Works w/ Alexa & Google Assistant】Fully compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, use your simple voice command to view Tapo indoor security camera live stream on Echo Show or Google Chrome Cast with a screen. Easily get your home security footage up on a larger TV display.

The low viewpoint could make the resulting clips feel less like surveillance footage and more like a companion’s point of view. It could also make navigation harder: a low camera may have a limited view over furniture and may be more exposed to collisions, chewing, spills, and curious paws.

4. AI edits the footage

The most distinctive part of the proposal is the automated editing. Rather than asking an owner to search through hours of recordings, Vex is intended to select moments and assemble them into “moving narratives” or shareable daily highlights.

That could be useful for owners who want to see what their pet did during the day but do not have time to review continuous video. It also creates the biggest unanswered quality question: whether the system can recognize genuinely interesting behavior or simply stitch together random movement. No verified sample reel was available in the reporting reviewed, so the quality, length, editability, and consistency of the finished videos remain unknown.

Why a pet cameraman is different from a pet camera

Capability Typical fixed pet camera Vex’s proposed approach
Where it records One installed viewing area It is intended to move with the pet
Viewpoint Usually shelf, wall, or ceiling height Near the animal’s level
Owner’s role Watch a live feed or review alerts Receive automatically assembled highlights
Interaction May offer audio, treats, or remote controls Reportedly may play with the pet as well as film it
Main promise Remote observation Autonomous pet filming and editing

Vex therefore belongs to a different category from a basic indoor security camera. Its appeal is not merely being able to check whether a pet is home. The appeal is having a robot companion create a record of the pet’s day without the owner directing every shot.

Is FrontierX Vex available to buy?

Its general retail availability has not been verified. At the CES 2026 reveal, Vex was described as being in development. Pricing had not been announced, and the reporting reviewed here said FrontierX had not released example footage. One report suggested that preorders might be expected within six months, but that does not establish that preorders opened or that the robot began shipping.

FrontierX’s current website, as represented in the research, focuses on the company’s broader Aura physical-AI platform and AuraOS rather than presenting a confirmed Vex purchase page. The site describes a spherical indoor robot, on-device perception, and autonomous mobility. It also gives a pet-oriented example in which an Aura agent notices movement, approaches a dog, displays expressions, plays sounds, and sends updates to the owner.

That Aura material offers context about FrontierX’s direction, but it should not be treated as proof that Vex is available or that Aura has precisely the same pet-filming design. Before paying a deposit or joining a preorder, look for an official FrontierX announcement that states the price, countries served, expected delivery date, refund terms, and final specifications.

What has not been announced about Vex

Anyone considering Vex—or comparing it with another autonomous pet camera—should treat the following as open questions:

  • Final retail price and any preorder deposit
  • Whether preorders have actually opened
  • Shipping countries and delivery schedule
  • Battery runtime, charging time, and what happens when the battery is low
  • Whether it can follow more than one pet
  • How accurately it distinguishes one pet from another
  • Performance in dim lighting, cluttered rooms, and homes with stairs
  • Obstacle avoidance and behavior around children and other animals
  • Whether it can safely operate near water, food, toys, and litter trays
  • Camera resolution, audio recording, storage method, and cloud requirements
  • Privacy controls for the camera and microphone
  • Whether the AI highlight feature requires a subscription or imposes storage limits
  • How much control owners have over the generated edits
  • Independent reviews, safety testing, and customer footage

Current alternatives to a Vex-style pet cameraman

There are already mobile pet-camera products that cover some of Vex’s proposed functions. None should be described as an official Vex replacement, and their advertised features should not be treated as independent test results. They differ mainly in availability and emphasis.

OnlyPetBuddy: an in-stock mobile pet camera

OnlyPetBuddy’s official product page lists the robot at $199 and says it is in stock and ready to ship. Its listed features include a 2K live view, remote roaming, two-way voice, photo and video capture, manual and scheduled play, automatic pet patrol, pet following, night vision, obstacle avoidance, automatic recharging, TF-card and cloud storage, and an iOS/Android app.

This makes OnlyPetBuddy a relevant option for someone who wants a mobile pet companion robot now rather than a fixed camera. However, the available product information does not establish that it performs Vex’s proposed AI-generated narrative workflow. The overlap is in movement, monitoring, and pet following—not necessarily in autonomous filmmaking.

Enabot ROLA PetPal: camera, communication, and treats

Enabot’s ROLA PetPal is another close comparison. Enabot describes it as a whole-home pet robot with remote control, a 2.5K UHD camera, two-way communication, interchangeable toy or treat modules, automatic capture and editing, AI-recognized snack dispensing, and automatic recharging.

Tapo 2K Pan Tilt Security Camera for Baby Monitor, Dog Camera, C210
  • 2K HIGH DEFINITION: Capture every detail inside your home with crystal-clear 2K high definition video with this indoor security camera. Easily see what your baby is holding or what your pet is playing with. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi required.
  • SEE MORE WITH PAN/TILT: This Pan/Tilt IP camera see everything across an entire room or walkway with the 360° horizontal and 114° vertical range pan/tilt field of view.
  • NO SUBSCRIPTION STORAGE OPTION - Store recordings on a microSD card at no cost◇ (up to 512GB) or subscribe to Tapo Care's cloud storage.
  • DETECTION & INSTANT NOTIFICATIONS: Get instant push notifications when motion, a person, or a baby crying is detected. No additional fee is required for baby monitoring. Smart detection helps distinguish pets from people.
  • WORKS W/ ALEXA & GOOGLE ASSISTANT: Use voice commands to view your Tapo camera’s live stream on Echo Show, Chromecast, or Nest displays. Google streaming is limited to Chromecast and Nest devices.

Its “personal photographer” positioning makes it particularly relevant to the idea of a cameraman for your pet. Still, automatic pet snapshots and marketed video features are not the same as a verified demonstration of Vex’s more ambitious promise: following an animal and turning the day’s footage into a coherent daily narrative.

PawMe: an emerging, waitlist-stage option

Ayva Labs markets PawMe as an upcoming AI companion robot designed to move with a pet. Its product page advertises room-to-room computer-vision tracking, live video, two-way audio, night vision, treat dispensing, automatic charging, smart alerts, behavior learning, and daily highlight reels.

PawMe is thematically close to Vex because both products are built around the limitations of static pet cameras. But PawMe should be treated as an emerging or prelaunch option: the page uses waitlist and early-backer language rather than presenting it as an established retail product. Advertised early-backer pricing should not be confused with a normal completed retail sale.

What to check before buying any robot pet camera

Movement and safety

  • Ask whether the robot can detect stairs, ledges, cables, rugs, and small toys.
  • Check whether the manufacturer describes safe behavior around children and animals.
  • Confirm whether it can operate around water bowls, food, litter, and spills.
  • Find out how it behaves when blocked, tipped over, stuck, or low on battery.
  • Do not leave a new moving robot unattended with a pet until you understand how the animal reacts to it.

Video, audio, and privacy

  • Check the actual video resolution and whether night vision is included.
  • Find out whether recordings are stored locally, in the cloud, or both.
  • Look for cloud-storage fees, subscription requirements, retention limits, and export options.
  • Review whether the microphone can be disabled and whether camera activity is clearly indicated.
  • Check how accounts, shared access, and deleted footage are handled.

Tracking and editing

  • Ask whether the robot follows one selected pet or attempts to track any animal it sees.
  • Look for evidence from dim rooms, multiple pets, and cluttered homes.
  • Check whether owners can select clips, change the edit, download original footage, or turn off automatic recording.
  • Do not assume that “AI highlights” means a polished story; request sample footage from the actual production hardware.

Should you wait for Vex?

Wait if the defining feature you want is a small autonomous robot that follows your pet and turns its day into edited videos. Vex’s concept is compelling precisely because it moves beyond watching a fixed room, but its most important details—price, battery life, safety, privacy, footage quality, and availability—remain unresolved in the reviewed information.

Choose a currently marketed mobile pet robot if your immediate need is remote live viewing, two-way communication, remote movement, treats, or basic pet following. OnlyPetBuddy is listed as in stock, while ROLA PetPal is positioned around mobile monitoring, interaction, and automatic capture. PawMe is worth watching if daily highlight reels are important, but its waitlist-stage status makes it a future option rather than a dependable purchase today.

For product research, “robot pet camera” is the most accurate category phrase. It describes what shoppers are looking for without falsely suggesting that FrontierX Vex is already sold on Amazon. Do not search for or describe a generic product as “the Vex,” and do not treat any of these products as an official Vex substitute.
