That makes the encounter a genuinely dangerous close call—but not a confirmed near-death experience. No retrieved account says Probst was bitten, envenomed, treated with antivenom, or hospitalized. The danger came from how close he was to one of the world’s most venomous snakes and from what could have happened if the strike had connected.

What happened when Jeff Probst encountered the cobra?
Probst described the incident in a September 17, 2002 chat about Survivor: Thailand. He said he had a “run-in” with a king cobra and described the snake as appearing to strike. He also joked that the humidity might have made it lethargic because he was able to walk past it.

A separate archived behind-the-scenes journal entry, attributed to Probst, gives a more alarming account. It says he was looking toward the camera when the cobra leapt forward. Probst’s response was to back up.
The two accounts differ in emphasis—one describes the snake as appearing to strike, while the other says it leapt forward—but they agree on the essential point: Probst came within striking distance of a king cobra, recognized the danger, and escaped without a documented bite.
Was Jeff Probst bitten by the king cobra?
There is no evidence in the retrieved accounts that Probst was bitten. They do not report envenomation, medical treatment, antivenom, or hospitalization.
That distinction matters because dramatic retellings can turn a frightening close encounter into an unsupported claim that someone was “almost killed.” The most accurate description is a potentially lethal near miss, not a confirmed near-death experience. Probst was close enough to face a serious risk, but the available evidence does not establish that he sustained an injury or that death was imminent.

Why a king-cobra strike could be deadly
The snake was a king cobra, Ophiophagus hannah, a large venomous species found across parts of Asia. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo explains that king-cobra venom contains neurotoxins that affect the nervous system, including the signals involved in breathing.
In other words, a bite is not dangerous merely because of the snake’s size or frightening appearance. Venom can interfere with the body’s ability to control vital functions. Without prompt professional medical care, severe envenomation can become fatal.
King cobras generally prefer to avoid people. They may rear up, spread their hoods, and defend themselves when they are cornered, provoked, or protecting eggs. A snake moving toward a person is therefore a serious warning, even if it ultimately retreats or misses.

Where did the encounter take place?
The incident occurred during the Thailand production of Survivor: Thailand, the show’s fifth season and a 2002 production. CBS News described the season as taking place on Ko Tarutao, off Thailand’s southwestern coast.
However, Probst’s archived journal uses the heading “Kao Yi National Park” for the king-cobra entry. The available sources do not independently reconcile those location labels. It is safer to say that the encounter happened during the Thailand production rather than assign it to a specific filming site.
The incident was also not documented as part of a particular challenge. The retrieved material does not establish that the snake appeared on camera, during a competition, or near the contestants.
Probst had described other dangerous Survivor encounters
In the same 2002 chat, Probst mentioned several other hazards from the show’s locations:

- a jellyfish sting during the first season;
- an accidental electric-fence incident during the second season;
- a scorpion sting in Africa; and
- a close shark encounter while diving during Survivor: Marquesas.
Those stories help explain how exposed Survivor production could be in remote environments, but they should not blur the central facts of the cobra incident. The king cobra encounter stands out because the snake reportedly moved into a striking motion while Probst was focused on the camera.
What this story does—and does not—prove
| Supported by the available accounts | Not established by those accounts |
|---|---|
| Probst encountered a king cobra during the Thailand production. | That he was bitten. |
| He described the snake as moving to strike or leaping forward. | That he was envenomed or needed antivenom. |
| He backed away and escaped. | That the encounter occurred during a specific challenge. |
| King-cobra venom can disrupt nervous-system function and breathing. | That the event was definitively seconds from death. |
The takeaway: a terrifying close call, not a confirmed near-death story
Jeff Probst was not reported to have been bitten by the king cobra. But that does not make the story harmless. During Survivor: Thailand filming, he described a large venomous snake surging or appearing to strike while he was looking toward the camera. He backed away, and the encounter ended without a documented injury.
The careful version of the headline is also the most frightening one: Probst came within striking distance of a king cobra, a snake whose venom can impair breathing, and escaped before the encounter became a medical emergency.

Bottom line: Jeff Probst was not documented as being bitten by a king cobra. During the 2002 Thailand production of Survivor, however, he said the snake moved toward him as if to strike, forcing him to back away. Because king-cobra venom can affect breathing, it was a genuinely dangerous close call—but calling it a confirmed near-death experience goes beyond the evidence.
