Usually, an umbilical hernia in a dog is not an immediate danger, but a veterinarian should assess any new navel-area bulge. The urgent concern is tissue becoming trapped and losing its blood supply. If the swelling is painful, warm, hard, or suddenly no longer soft, or your dog is vomiting, not eating, or unusually tired, seek urgent veterinary care.

What an umbilical hernia is

An umbilical hernia is a gap around the navel through which abdominal lining, fat, or, occasionally, an abdominal organ protrudes. Before birth, the umbilical vessels pass through an opening in the abdominal muscles. If that ring does not close fully after birth, a soft bulge may appear beneath the skin. It can become more noticeable when a puppy stands, barks, cries, or strains. VCA Animal Hospitals describes the condition and its typical appearance.

A veterinarian may describe a hernia as reducible if its contents can move back through the opening, or non-reducible if they are stuck. That distinction is for a veterinary examination: do not try to push the swelling back yourself. Appearance alone cannot establish whether a hernia is safe.

When a hernia needs urgent attention

Most umbilical hernias are painless and do not threaten a dog’s health. Rarely, tissue becomes trapped and its blood supply is cut off—a complication known as strangulation. VCA describes a strangulated hernia as an emergency requiring immediate surgery.

Contact a veterinarian urgently if the bulge becomes painful, warm, firm, or hard; changes from soft to non-reducible; or appears alongside vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, or abdominal discomfort. These warning signs are consistent with guidance from Animal Trust Vets and Banfield Pet Hospital. Do not wait for a routine appointment if your dog has these symptoms.

How a veterinarian checks the bulge

Arrange a veterinary examination for a new navel-area swelling even if your dog seems comfortable. A physical examination is often enough to identify an umbilical hernia. If the veterinarian needs to determine whether tissue is trapped or assess what is protruding, imaging may occasionally be recommended, according to Merck Veterinary Manual and Animal Trust.

Can a puppy’s hernia close on its own?

Some small hernias close as a puppy grows, but closure is not guaranteed and published veterinary guidance gives different timeframes. VCA says hernias under 1 cm may close spontaneously by 3 to 4 months of age; Animal Trust notes closure can occur around six months. These are possibilities, not deadlines for deciding that a bulge is safe. Follow the veterinarian’s advice on monitoring and rechecks rather than waiting for a particular age without assessment.

Monitoring or surgery: how treatment is decided

For an uncomplicated hernia, the veterinarian may recommend monitoring or surgical repair. The decision depends on the hernia’s size, whether contents are stuck or intestine appears involved, whether it persists as the puppy grows, and whether a spay or neuter procedure is already planned. Owners should not use a wrap, binder, or other device as treatment; the veterinary sources do not establish a home treatment that closes the opening.

If the hernia remains open, repair may be recommended, particularly if intestinal tissue protrudes. Small hernias are often repaired during a planned spay or neuter. A suspected strangulated hernia is different: it requires emergency care, not a routine procedure scheduled for later. VCA reports an excellent prognosis after surgical correction, with few reported recurrences and complications; that general outlook is not a guarantee for an individual dog.

What is known about causes and inherited risk

The exact incidence and cause are unknown. Higher incidence in some family lines suggests a possible genetic predisposition, and Merck describes an inherited tendency as possible. The available guidance does not establish a precise inheritance pattern, a breed-specific risk ranking, or a reliable prevalence percentage.
