That distinction matters. Octopus camouflage depends on a coordinated biological system involving pigment sacs, reflective cells, nerves, muscles, skin texture, posture, and behavior. The engineered microbes make one important chemical component of that system: xanthommatin.

An octopus can alter its appearance rapidly by controlling specialized structures in its skin. The most familiar are chromatophores: elastic sacs containing pigment. Nerves and muscles expand or contract the sacs, changing how much pigment is visible from outside.

Chromatophores are only part of the picture. Iridophores reflect light, while leucophores scatter and reflect surrounding light. Octopuses can also change their skin texture, body posture, and behavior. Together, these systems help produce the animal’s remarkable patterns and apparent color shifts.
Xanthommatin belongs to a group of animal pigments called ommochromes. Its color and optical behavior can change under different chemical conditions, making it interesting not only for understanding cephalopods but also for possible future materials and coatings.
For readers who want the biology before the biotechnology, an octopus science book can be a useful companion—especially for children, families, and educators. Books about octopus camouflage explain the living animal’s skin, senses, and behavior; they should not be assumed to cover this 2025 bacterial-production study.

The problem: xanthommatin was hard to obtain
Researchers have wanted to study xanthommatin and related pigments, but obtaining enough material is difficult. Extracting it from animals is not a practical route for routine laboratory work, and conventional chemical synthesis is labor-intensive and can produce relatively small amounts.
Microbes can act as biological chemical factories. In principle, scientists can add genes that instruct a bacterium to make a desired compound, feed the cells an inexpensive carbon source such as glucose, and recover the product from the culture. In practice, foreign pathways often make the host cell grow more slowly.
That creates a basic selection problem. If producing the target molecule is merely an optional extra task, cells that produce less of it may grow faster and eventually take over the culture. The most productive cells can be disadvantaged by the very pathway researchers want them to use.

How the engineered bacteria turned pigment production into a growth advantage
The team used the soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida and designed a growth-coupled biosynthetic system. Instead of treating xanthommatin production as an unrelated burden, the researchers connected the pathway to a metabolic function the bacterium needed in order to grow.

The key link involves formate, a one-carbon compound released during xanthommatin biosynthesis. The engineered strain was metabolically constrained so that assimilating formate helped restore the one-carbon resources required for growth. In simplified terms:
- The bacterial pathway begins converting nutrients toward xanthommatin.
- The pathway releases formate.
- The bacterium uses that formate to help replenish one-carbon metabolism.
- That metabolic repair allows the cell to grow more effectively.
This creates a feedback loop: pathway activity helps the cell grow, and growing cells continue making the pathway product. A cell that abandons the pathway loses part of the advantage that supports its growth.
The strategy does not mean every bacterium makes the same amount of pigment automatically. The researchers still had to optimize the system. They used high-throughput adaptive laboratory evolution, repeatedly growing populations and selecting strains that performed better. The evolved bacteria could produce xanthommatin from glucose and no longer depended on some of the additional growth conditions required by the starting strain.
How much pigment did the microbes make?
The reported output reached the gram-per-liter range. A UC San Diego summary gives a production level of approximately 1 to 3 grams per liter from glucose.
That is a major improvement over the roughly 5 milligrams per liter cited for conventional approaches under favorable circumstances—approximately a three-orders-of-magnitude difference in the comparison reported by the institution.

It is important not to turn that comparison into a promise of industrial yield. The figures come from different production approaches and conditions, and a laboratory result is not the same as a validated commercial manufacturing process. The study demonstrates gram-scale microbial production; it does not establish that xanthommatin is already being manufactured at industrial scale or sold as a mass-market ingredient.
What the bacteria did—and did not—make
| The study demonstrated | The study did not demonstrate |
|---|---|
| Engineered Pseudomonas putida producing xanthommatin | Bacteria that camouflage themselves like octopuses |
| A growth-coupled pathway using a formate-related metabolic loop | A complete artificial chromatophore system |
| Production at roughly 1–3 grams per liter in the reported system | A finished adaptive camouflage suit or color-changing paint |
| A potentially scalable source for further research | An approved commercial sunscreen, cosmetic, or medical product |
The pigment molecule alone cannot reproduce octopus camouflage. A living octopus must control when and where pigment becomes visible, coordinate multiple skin-cell types, reflect or scatter light, and often modify its surface texture. The microbial system currently supplies the chemical, not the animal’s nervous, muscular, optical, or behavioral machinery.
Why a microbial source could change research
Having a more practical supply of xanthommatin could make laboratory studies easier. Scientists may be able to test its light-absorbing and color-changing properties, investigate how its chemistry responds to its surroundings, and evaluate combinations with polymers, coatings, or other materials without relying on animal extraction.

The work also illustrates a broader principle in synthetic biology. Difficult natural products are often challenging because the host cell sees their production as a cost. Growth coupling changes the evolutionary incentives: productive metabolism is connected to the cell’s own survival or reproduction. That lets researchers use growth as a selection mechanism for improving a pathway.
The same design logic might help with other difficult biosynthetic targets. It is not a universal solution, however. A different molecule may not release a useful metabolite, restore a needed metabolic function, or tolerate the same engineering strategy. Each target would require its own pathway design and testing.
Could xanthommatin be used in sunscreen, cosmetics, or smart materials?
Potential applications discussed around the research include dyes, coatings, optical and photoelectronic devices, thermal coatings, ultraviolet protection, and cosmetics. Xanthommatin’s chemical responsiveness makes those areas scientifically interesting.

The immediate achievement is best understood as a supply breakthrough. Scientists now have a microbial route that can produce substantially more xanthommatin than the low-yield approaches previously used in the cited comparison.
That supply could help researchers explore whether the pigment is useful in responsive dyes, protective coatings, optical devices, or other materials. Future systems might combine the pigment with structures that alter exposure, reflectance, or color under changing conditions. Such work would be inspired by octopus biology, but it would not be the same as recreating an octopus’s camouflage.
The accurate takeaway
US scientists did not create an octopus that changes color inside a bacterium. They engineered Pseudomonas putida to manufacture xanthommatin, a chemically responsive animal pigment associated with cephalopod coloration, and used a formate-linked growth-coupling strategy to improve production.

The reported 1–3 grams per liter is promising because it removes a major obstacle to studying the pigment and testing future uses. The next questions—whether the pigment can be made economically at larger scale, incorporated safely into useful products, and perform well outside the laboratory—remain open.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the engineered bacteria change color like an octopus?
No. The bacteria make xanthommatin, one pigment associated with cephalopod coloration. They do not reproduce the chromatophores, reflective cells, nervous system, muscles, skin texture, or behavior that allow an octopus to change its appearance.
How much xanthommatin did the microbes produce?
The study reports approximately 1–3 grams per liter from glucose in the engineered system. That is a large improvement over the roughly 5 milligrams per liter cited for conventional approaches, but it is not a guarantee of industrial-scale yield.
Is xanthommatin already available in commercial sunscreen or cosmetics?
Not based on this study. Sunscreen, skincare, coatings, dyes, and optical materials are potential application areas, but commercial availability, safety, performance, and regulatory status require separate evidence.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The breakthrough is microbial production of xanthommatin at gram-per-liter levels, not bacteria that can camouflage themselves like octopuses. By linking pigment production to bacterial growth, the researchers created a more practical source of a difficult-to-obtain compound and opened the door to further research on octopus-inspired materials.
