A little penguin found on Cameron’s Bight at Blairgowrie, Victoria, was taken to a wildlife shelter after a local freediver described it as exhausted and far from a penguin colony. A later update said it was recovering, but the available report does not confirm whether it was released.
Where the penguin was found
Jules Casey, a local freediver and photographer, said she came across the penguin on the shore at Cameron’s Bight in Blairgowrie, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. In an account published by Storyful on March 27, 2022, Casey said the bird was a long way from a penguin colony, kept returning to the sand and did not move for 20 minutes. She worried that a dog or fox could harm it if it remained there. Storyful’s report and video describe Casey’s account; they do not present a veterinary assessment of the bird’s condition.

Who rescued it and where it went
Casey called her friend Sam Gummer, a volunteer with Animalia Wildlife Shelter. Gummer captured the penguin, and Casey drove it to Animalia’s shelter in Frankston. Storyful reported that it was being cared for there with the intention of releasing it back into the wild when appropriate.
What is known about its recovery
Casey later shared an Instagram update, described in Storyful’s report, saying the penguin was recovering well and growing stronger each day. That update indicates improvement at the time; it does not establish that the bird was ultimately released. The available report does not confirm its later condition or present-day status.
