Welcome to Pleistocene Park: How Siberia Is Testing a Mammoth-Steppe Ecosystem

Pleistocene Park near Chersky, Siberia, uses living herbivores—not mammoths—to test whether grazing can restore a mammoth-steppe-like ecosystem and locally protect permafrost.

Pleistocene Park does not contain living mammoths. Near Chersky on the Kolyma River in northeastern Siberia, it is a roughly 20-square-kilometer enclosed field experiment that uses living herbivores—including Yakutian horses, bison, reindeer, musk oxen, moose, cattle, sheep, camels, and goats—to test whether large animals can rebuild some of the ecological functions of the late-Pleistocene mammoth steppe.

The project’s mammoth connection is ecological rather than zoological. Its researchers are testing whether dense grazing and trampling can replace shrub- and tree-dominated northern vegetation with more productive grassland, alter snow cover, cool the ground, and potentially slow local permafrost thaw. A future genetically engineered “mammoth-like” elephant is a separate and still-uncertain biotechnology project—not an animal currently living in the park.

Pleistocene Park at a glance

Question Answer
Where is it? Near Chersky on the Kolyma River in the Sakha Republic, also known as Yakutia, in northeastern Siberia.
What is it? A fenced ecological-engineering and rewilding experiment, not a conventional zoo or functioning “Jurassic Park.”
How large is the enclosed area? The official project site describes approximately 20 square kilometers.
Are mammoths there? No. The park currently relies on living proxy species and landscape management.
What is being tested? Whether large-herbivore grazing can restore a productive, grass-rich ecosystem resembling parts of the late-Pleistocene mammoth steppe.
What is the climate claim? Animal activity may influence vegetation, snow insulation, soil temperature, carbon storage, and methane emissions, but the effects are local and conditional—not proof of a continental climate solution.

What Pleistocene Park is—and is not

The project was founded by Russian ecologist Sergey Zimov and is associated with the Zimov family’s long-running work in northeastern Siberia. Its central idea is straightforward but ambitious: rather than trying to recreate every extinct species, change the landscape by restoring a high-density community of large herbivores.

The project’s own description is that of a highly productive “steppe tundra” or pasture system with abundant animals, rapid nutrient cycling, and more grass. That makes Pleistocene Park closer to a living ecological experiment than to a wildlife attraction built around viewing rare animals.

The distinction matters because public descriptions sometimes compress the idea into “bringing back the mammoths.” The park has not done that. Its present work asks whether living animals can perform enough of the ecological work once performed by extinct megafauna to shift a northern ecosystem toward a different state.

The mammoth steppe was not one uniform grassland

The “mammoth steppe” is a useful name for a broad late-Pleistocene ecological complex that covered much of northern Eurasia and Beringia. It was generally cold, dry, open, and rich in grasses and other forage. Large populations of horses, bison, reindeer, mammoths, and other herbivores occupied the landscape.

That ancient system may have supported far more animal biomass than the modern Arctic tundra image suggests. Research on fossil biomass and productivity has argued that some parts of the mammoth-steppe environment could have approached the productivity and herbivore density of an African savanna, despite the much colder climate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But “mammoth steppe” should not be treated as a synonym for an endless, treeless prairie. Ancient-DNA and paleoenvironmental evidence points to a shifting mosaic of steppe-tundra, shrubland, wet tundra, peatland, and forest. Conditions varied across both space and time. The modern park is therefore best described as mammoth-steppe-inspired or mammoth-steppe-like, not as a complete reproduction of the extinct biome.

The Zimov ecosystem hypothesis

Sergey Zimov’s ecosystem hypothesis gives large herbivores an active role in creating the habitat they occupy. In this view, horses, bison, reindeer, mammoths, and other grazers were not merely eating plants in an already-established grassland. Their feeding and movement helped maintain the open, productive conditions that supported them.

The proposed feedbacks include:

  • Grazing: Herbivores remove grass, shrubs, and some young woody growth. Repeated grazing can favor plants that tolerate or recover quickly from browsing.
  • Trampling: Animal movement damages shrubs and small trees, disturbs the ground, and creates repeated patches of disturbance.
  • Nutrient cycling: Dung and animal movement return nutrients to the soil and can speed the movement of plant material through the ecosystem.
  • Vegetation change: Shorter, grass-dominated vegetation can be more open and reflective than tall shrubs or woodland.
  • Snow change: Large animals compress and partly clear snow, reducing the insulating blanket above the soil.

Under this interpretation, the disappearance of many large herbivores at the end of the Pleistocene removed an important ecological force. Grasslands then gave way in many areas to shrub tundra, wetlands, and forest. Reintroducing large grazers is intended to test whether some of that transition can be reversed locally under modern conditions.

This is a hypothesis-driven experiment, not a claim that simply adding animals automatically restores an ancient ecosystem. The outcome depends on the number and type of animals, the vegetation already present, water conditions, terrain, climate, and how the herd is managed.

Which animals are used as mammoth proxies?

The official project site lists nine major herbivore categories: reindeer, Yakutian horses, moose, bison, musk oxen, Kalmykian cattle, sheep, camels, and goats. The assemblage combines wild species with domestic livestock and is intended to provide a range of body sizes and feeding behaviors.

Animal or group Why it matters to the experiment
Yakutian horses Important large grazers and especially relevant because horses were abundant in the Pleistocene north.
Bison and musk oxen Large-bodied herbivores that can graze, trample vegetation, and move nutrients across the landscape.
Reindeer A cold-adapted northern herbivore already suited to the regional environment.
Moose A large browser with different feeding behavior from predominantly grazing animals.
Kalmykian cattle and other cattle or yak-like animals Managed large herbivores that add grazing pressure and biomass to the experimental community.
Sheep, goats, and camels Additional herbivores with different sizes, diets, and patterns of vegetation use.

These animals are functional substitutes, not biological duplicates. A Yakutian horse is not a mammoth, and a herd containing bison, cattle, and musk oxen is not an exact reconstruction of Pleistocene fauna. The scientific question is whether their combined ecological effects are sufficient to produce some of the same landscape processes.

Field research associated with the project has examined grazing in fenced experimental areas in northeastern Siberia. One 40-hectare study area included Yakutian horses, Kalmykian cattle, reindeer, bison, musk oxen, moose, sheep, yaks, and European bison across tundra and forest-tundra landscapes.

How grazing could change the ground

The park’s restoration strategy depends on a chain of ecological effects rather than one “mammoth trick.” When large herbivores graze and trample a shrub- or forest-tundra landscape, they may gradually reduce woody vegetation and create more open areas. More grass can mean more forage, which can support more herbivores and reinforce the cycle.

In winter, the animals’ movement is particularly important to the permafrost argument. Snow normally insulates soil from the coldest winter air. Herds walking across the snow can compact it and break up some of that insulating structure. With a thinner or denser snow layer, more winter cold may reach the ground.

If the soil begins the summer colder, the seasonally thawed active layer may be shallower. That could leave more permafrost frozen through the warm season. In summer, a shorter, more reflective grass-dominated plant cover may also absorb less solar energy than taller, darker shrubs or trees.

These mechanisms are plausible and supported by a combination of field observations and modeling. They are not guaranteed outcomes. Snow depth, moisture, soil type, vegetation, animal density, and topography can all change the result.

What the research actually shows about permafrost

A Scientific Reports modeling study asked what could happen if herbivore densities approached levels observed or envisioned at Pleistocene Park. Under the study’s assumptions and climate scenarios, increasing herbivore density could have potentially substantial effects on contemporary permafrost thaw. The model also indicated that lower animal densities might produce meaningful changes.

A model result is not the same as a demonstrated park-wide climate effect. It shows what may happen under specified conditions; it does not prove that the same response will occur across Siberia, or that a fenced herd can offset regional or global warming.

There is also more direct but localized evidence. In a pilot field comparison covering a 23-year period, researchers reported that intensive grazing might have helped keep soil cooler and maintain or slightly increase carbon storage at the studied non-forest permafrost sites. The authors concluded that intensified animal husbandry could locally stabilize carbon storage.

The qualifiers are essential: the finding was local, the effect was described as possible rather than certain, and it does not establish a universally beneficial result for every permafrost landscape.

Carbon and methane: promising signals, not carbon removal

Research at a Siberian Pleistocene Park tundra site reported that grazing enhanced carbon cycling and reduced methane emissions during the peak growing season. Large herbivores can alter vegetation, soil properties, water movement, and the balance between plant growth and decomposition, all of which affect greenhouse-gas fluxes.

That result helps explain the project’s climate interest. It does not make Pleistocene Park a proven carbon-removal technology. Methane and carbon responses can vary by season and site, and a short-term change in one flux does not automatically demonstrate a permanent increase in ecosystem carbon storage.

The most defensible summary is that large-herbivore grazing may influence several climate-relevant processes at once:

  • the amount and type of snow insulation;
  • winter soil temperature;
  • summer vegetation and surface reflectivity;
  • carbon storage and carbon cycling in soil;
  • methane production and release.

The direction and size of the combined effect remain site-specific and uncertain. Pleistocene Park is useful precisely because it tests these interactions in the real world, but it has not shown that herds can stop Arctic permafrost thaw at continental scale.

Why overgrazing is a serious concern

More animals are not always better. A study of grazing effects on relic mammoth-steppe sites found that results varied with grazer density, animal type, climate, and local conditions. In some settings, another study from Yakutia warns that grazing—especially overgrazing—can disrupt the permafrost regime and intensify thermokarst, the formation of unstable, water-filled ground depressions caused by thawing ice-rich permafrost.

That creates a central management challenge. The herd must be large enough to produce meaningful ecological pressure, but not so concentrated that it strips vegetation, damages soils, increases erosion, or destabilizes frozen ground.

A successful restoration strategy would therefore need monitoring rather than a fixed instruction to “add more grazers.” Managers would need to track animal density, forage availability, snow depth, soil temperature, active-layer thickness, vegetation change, methane and carbon fluxes, water conditions, and signs of thermokarst.

Did humans or climate cause the mammoth-steppe collapse?

The project is partly motivated by the idea that humans helped drive late-Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions and that the loss of large herbivores then allowed the mammoth-steppe ecosystem to disappear. But the scientific debate is more complicated than a single cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Research on mammoth extinction in Beringia describes a long process involving interacting changes in climate, habitat, vegetation, and human presence. Other analyses conclude that warming and human impacts played different roles in different parts of Eurasia. As climates became warmer and wetter, open forage-rich habitats contracted or changed. Humans may have added hunting pressure in some regions, particularly when animal populations were already stressed or fragmented.

This disagreement is fundamental to the park’s logic. If climate change alone made the grassland impossible under modern conditions, reintroducing herbivores would have limited leverage. If large animals were important ecosystem engineers and northeastern Siberia still falls within a climate range that can support productive open habitat, grazing could help restore some of the lost functions.

Pleistocene Park cannot settle every continental paleoecological question. Its experiments are local and relatively small compared with the former mammoth-steppe region. But they can test whether animal density changes vegetation, snow, soil, and carbon processes in ways consistent with the ecosystem hypothesis.

Where do actual mammoths fit?

Woolly mammoths are central to the project’s inspiration, but the park’s immediate work does not depend on resurrecting Mammuthus primigenius. The practical experiment—bringing together cold-adapted herbivores and managing their habitat—can proceed without a living mammoth.

A mammoth model can be useful for visualizing the extinct animal that once shaped northern landscapes. For collectors, educators, or readers who want a physical representation rather than a field experiment, a woolly mammoth model offers that context. It should not be confused with an animal currently present in the park.

A separate biotechnology effort has attracted attention from Colossal Biosciences. The company says it is working toward a cold-resistant elephant with selected mammoth traits, using Asian-elephant biology, mammoth genomic information, and gene-editing techniques. Its own description is closer to a mammoth-like or cold-adapted elephant than to the genetically identical resurrection of an extinct individual.

Public materials and reporting available as of 12 August 2026 described a target around 2028 for the first mammoth-like calves. Reports also described substantially edited mammoth cell lines and ongoing work on elephant in-vitro fertilization and ovum-retrieval challenges. Those are developmental milestones, not evidence that a viable calf has been born. There is also no indication in the supplied research that a release into Pleistocene Park or Siberia has been approved.

Claim How to describe it accurately
The park exists Established: Pleistocene Park is an enclosed northeastern Siberian experiment using living herbivores.
Grazing changes ecosystems Supported but limited: studies show effects on vegetation, snow, soil temperature, carbon storage, and methane at particular sites.
Mammoths will return Future and uncertain: a mammoth-like elephant is a separate biotechnology goal, with reported targets rather than a completed animal or approved release.

How large could Pleistocene Park become?

The official project site describes an enclosed area of approximately 20 square kilometers. A foundation roadmap has stated an ambition to turn the broader area into highly productive steppe tundra and settle 3,000 animals by 2029.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That 3,000-animal figure is an organizational goal, not an independently verified current population count. It should not be presented as the number of animals already living in the park.

Scaling the experiment would involve more than transporting animals. The project must contend with:

  • remote logistics in northeastern Siberia;
  • fencing, transport, winter feed, and veterinary care;
  • predator management and animal welfare;
  • political and legal conditions in Russia;
  • conflicts with other land uses and local communities;
  • the ecological risks of introducing or concentrating animals;
  • the difficulty of extrapolating results from small fenced plots to millions of hectares.

A local result may also become weaker or change direction when the scale changes. Animals may run out of forage, migrate beyond the experimental boundary, concentrate around water, or affect wetlands and forests differently from open tundra. A climate-relevant restoration program would need long-term measurements across multiple landscapes, not just a visually impressive transformation at one site.

What would count as success?

Success should not be defined as making Siberia look like a movie version of the Ice Age. A more useful test would ask whether the project can demonstrate, over many years and under careful management, that:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. large herbivores can survive without causing unacceptable welfare or ecological damage;
  2. grazing consistently shifts vegetation toward more open, productive habitat;
  3. snow compaction and vegetation change measurably cool the ground;
  4. permafrost carbon is protected rather than merely moved or temporarily retained;
  5. methane and carbon responses remain favorable across seasons and years;
  6. the effects persist at larger scales and in different site conditions;
  7. the approach works without creating serious conflicts with people, wildlife, or other land uses.

That is a demanding standard. It is also why the park is scientifically more interesting than the simple headline “mammoths are coming back.” The experiment is testing a relationship between animals and landscapes, not staging a resurrection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there living mammoths at Pleistocene Park?

No. Pleistocene Park currently uses living herbivores as ecological proxies, including Yakutian horses, bison, reindeer, musk oxen, moose, cattle, sheep, camels, and goats. The park is testing animal-driven habitat change rather than displaying resurrected mammoths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Pleistocene Park a zoo or tourist attraction?

It is better understood as a fenced ecological-engineering and rewilding experiment. The supplied research does not establish current visitor rules or public access, so readers should not assume that it operates like a conventional zoo or wildlife park.

Can Pleistocene Park stop climate change?

No evidence supports that broad claim. Grazing may locally affect snow insulation, soil temperature, vegetation reflectivity, carbon storage, and methane emissions. Modeling and field studies are promising but limited, site-specific, and not proof of a continental-scale climate solution.

What is a mammoth-like elephant?

It is a proposed cold-resistant elephant engineered with selected mammoth traits using Asian-elephant biology, mammoth genomic information, and gene editing. It would not necessarily be a genetically identical woolly mammoth. Reported birth dates are targets, not completed results.

Why are horses and bison used instead of mammoths?

They are living large herbivores that can perform some relevant ecological functions: grazing, trampling, moving nutrients, and changing snow cover. They are proxies, not exact replacements. Their combined effects may resemble some mammoth-steppe processes without recreating the original species community.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Was the mammoth-steppe simply a giant grassland?

Not everywhere. Evidence indicates a heterogeneous landscape that included steppe-tundra, shrubland, wet tundra, peatland, and forest. “Mammoth steppe” is a useful ecological shorthand, but it should not be treated as one uniform treeless prairie.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pleistocene Park is a real, mammoth-free experiment in northeastern Siberia. Its researchers are testing whether dense communities of living herbivores can restore some mammoth-steppe functions and locally influence permafrost conditions. The idea has credible ecological mechanisms and intriguing field evidence, but its climate benefits, safety, and ability to scale remain unresolved. A future mammoth-like elephant could become part of that story someday; it is not the story today.
