It is a broad category, not the name of one species, breed, cooking method, or packaged food. It includes fish from several major biological groups and is not limited to fish with a particular number, size, or shape of fins.

Finned fish versus shellfish
| Term | What it generally means | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Finfish or finned fish | True fish, typically aquatic vertebrates with gills and a backbone | Salmon, cod, trout, tuna, sharks, and rays |
| Shellfish | Aquatic invertebrates commonly grouped as seafood because they have a hard or soft shell | Shrimp, crabs, lobsters, clams, oysters, and mussels |
So, a shrimp is seafood but is not a finned fish. A crab, lobster, clam, or oyster is also shellfish rather than finfish. The word seafood is the broader commercial category; it can include both finfish and shellfish.
This distinction appears in seafood menus, commercial fishing and aquaculture materials, permits, traceability systems, and food-safety information. It is especially useful when a document says “fish and shellfish” and means two different groups.
The three broad biological groups of finfish
For a general explanation, finned fish can be divided into three broad groups. These groupings are useful educational categories, not a replacement for every modern taxonomic rank used by fish scientists.
1. Jawless fish
Jawless fish include lampreys and hagfish. They are fish even though their bodies differ considerably from those of familiar bony fish. Their inclusion is one reason it is misleading to define finned fish only as ordinary-looking food fish.
2. Cartilaginous fish
Sharks, rays, and skates are cartilaginous fish. Their internal skeletons are made primarily of cartilage rather than bone. They are still commonly included in the practical seafood and fisheries category of finfish.

3. Bony fish
Bony fish are the large and familiar group that includes most freshwater and marine fish encountered by anglers, aquarists, seafood shoppers, and pet owners. Salmon, cod, tuna, trout, bass, tilapia, and many aquarium species belong here.
In everyday language, “finned fish” does not mean “bony fish only.” Sharks and rays remain finfish even though they belong to the cartilaginous group.

People may encounter “finned fish” in allergy guidance, ingredient discussions, seafood information, or educational material. In the United States, fish is one of the nine major food allergens recognized under federal law.
For applicable packaged foods, allergen labeling identifies the food source using the specific fish name—for example, cod, bass, or flounder—rather than relying only on a vague phrase such as “seafood.” A statement that a product contains “finned fish” is therefore not automatically the same thing as a complete allergen declaration.
If you or someone in your household has a diagnosed fish allergy, follow the advice of a qualified medical professional and check applicable product labels carefully. Do not assume that “fish” and “shellfish” are interchangeable: they are separate categories, and an individual may react to one, the other, or both.

- INTERNAL POWER FILTER: Tetra Whisper Internal Power Filter for 5- to 10-gallon aquariums uses medium Whisper BioBag filter cartridges that are easy to change.
- QUIET 85 GPH MOTOR: The internal pump efficiently filters up to 85 gallons per hour.
- POWERFUL FILTRATION: Water flows through the cartridge floss, trapping debris and fish waste, while Ultra-activated carbon helps remove odor and discoloration.
- SPACE-SAVING DESIGN: Your aquarium can be 1” from the wall with the internal filter designed to clip directly on your aquarium wall and be hidden by décor.
- EASILY ADJUSTABLE: Adjustable clip allows for a variety of setups to easily adjust to high or low water levels.
What does “finned fish” mean on a pet-food label?
On pet-related material, the phrase usually signals that the ingredient or protein source comes from fish rather than from shellfish. It may be used as a broad description when several fish species are involved. A more specific ingredient or product statement may name the species, such as salmon or whitefish.

The category alone does not tell you:
- which species was used;
- whether the fish was fresh, dried, or processed;
- how much fish the food contains;
- whether the food is appropriate for a particular dog or cat; or
- whether a pet with a suspected food reaction will tolerate it.
For a pet with a diagnosed or suspected food allergy, use the ingredient information and feeding plan recommended by your veterinarian. A broad word such as “fish” is not enough to identify every possible source or rule out cross-contact.
How to identify different kinds of finned fish
Because finned fish includes thousands of species across different environments, identification normally requires more than noticing that an animal has fins. Body shape, fin placement, scales, coloration, mouth structure, habitat, geographic location, and sometimes anatomical details may all matter.
A fish identification field guide can be useful for comparing ray-finned, cartilaginous, and other fish groups, whether you are identifying a fish seen in a freshwater habitat, at the coast, in an aquarium, or in a regional catch. No single guide should be assumed to cover every finned fish worldwide, so choose one for the relevant region and purpose.
Common misunderstandings
“Finned fish” means only fish with visible fins
Not necessarily. The expression is a practical category rather than a precise checklist based on fin appearance. It is commonly used to distinguish true fish from shellfish in seafood contexts.

Sharks and rays do not count because they have cartilage
They do count as finfish. Cartilaginous fish are one of the broad groups included in the category.
Shellfish are fish because they live in water
Not biologically. Shrimp, crabs, lobsters, clams, and oysters are aquatic invertebrates. They are called shellfish as a seafood grouping, but they are not true fish.
The phrase identifies one particular food
It does not. “Finned fish” can refer to a broad group of wild or farmed species and does not by itself specify a species, preparation, quality, or nutritional profile.
Quick answer
Finned fish are true fish—also called finfish—including salmon, cod, trout, tuna, sharks, rays, lampreys, and many other freshwater and marine species. In seafood terminology, they are contrasted with shellfish such as shrimp, crabs, lobsters, clams, and oysters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are finned fish one specific type of fish?
No. “Finned fish” is a broad category rather than a single species or taxonomic order. It includes many freshwater and marine fish, including bony fish, sharks, rays, lampreys, and hagfish.

Are shrimp and other shellfish finned fish?
No. Shrimp, crab, lobster, clams, oysters, and mussels are generally classified as shellfish, not finned fish. They are aquatic invertebrates, while true fish are vertebrates.
Do sharks and rays count as finned fish?
Yes. Sharks, rays, and skates are cartilaginous fish, but they are commonly included in the practical seafood category called finfish.
What does finned fish mean in pet food?
Usually, it means the ingredient or protein comes from a true fish rather than shellfish. The broad phrase does not identify the exact species or establish whether a particular pet will tolerate the food, so check the full ingredient information and ask your veterinarian when allergies are a concern.
The Bottom Line
Finned fish is a broad practical term for true fish, or finfish. It includes bony fish such as salmon and tuna as well as cartilaginous fish such as sharks and rays, while shellfish such as shrimp and oysters belong to a separate seafood category.
