Budget for health screening and routine veterinary care first, then keep a separate contingency for an individually diagnosed problem. The Alaskan Klee Kai Club of America (AKKCOA) describes the breed as generally healthy, with a stated life expectancy of 13–16 years. Its 2024 recommendations focus on patellar luxation, autoimmune thyroiditis, cardiac disease and eye disorders; a Factor VII deficiency DNA test is optional.
Those recommendations identify what responsible breeders screen for, not a prediction that your dog will develop any of these conditions. The only condition in the available sources with a published U.S. treatment benchmark is patellar luxation surgery: PetMD gives a broad estimate of $1,000–$3,000 per affected knee. Your veterinarian’s written estimate, your dog’s history and your location matter more than any breed-wide figure.

What the breed-club guidance actually tells owners
The AKKCOA’s 2024 health statement says, “The Alaskan Klee Kai (AKK) is a generally healthy breed.” It recommends evaluating four areas in breeding stock:
- Patellar luxation (kneecap displacement)
- Autoimmune thyroiditis through thyroid evaluation
- Cardiac disease through a congenital or advanced cardiac examination
- Eye disorders through an examination by a boarded ACVO ophthalmologist, with results registered with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) or an international ophthalmological examination system
The statement lists Factor VII deficiency DNA testing as optional. The American Kennel Club (AKC) includes that test in its national breed-club recommendations. None of these recommendations establishes that every Alaskan Klee Kai needs the same testing schedule as an adult pet, nor do they provide a prevalence rate for the breed.

Screening is most useful for breeding decisions. A normal result lowers concern for the condition tested at that time, but it cannot guarantee that a puppy will never develop disease. Conversely, a screening recommendation is not evidence that a particular dog is ill.
Which health problems could create a large veterinary bill?
Patellar luxation
Patellar luxation occurs when the kneecap moves out of its normal groove. A veterinarian can often identify it during a physical examination. Mild cases may be managed medically, while surgery may be considered when the luxation is severe or medical treatment has not worked.
PetMD reports a general U.S. estimate of $1,000–$3,000 per affected knee for surgery. This is not an Alaskan Klee Kai-specific quote, and it is not a complete episode-of-care budget. Severity, whether one or both knees are involved, geographic area, the surgeon or hospital, diagnostics and postoperative care can all change the total. PetMD also notes that recheck visits are part of recovery.

Autoimmune thyroiditis
Thyroid evaluation is recommended for breeding stock by both the AKKCOA and the AKC. The available sources do not provide an Alaskan Klee Kai prevalence percentage, a universal interval for repeat testing in household pets or a current treatment-cost range. If your veterinarian recommends thyroid testing because of symptoms, age, family history or a breeding plan, request a case-specific estimate and ask which tests are included.
Cardiac disease
Cardiac evaluation is another breeding-stock priority. The AKKCOA specifies a congenital or advanced cardiac examination. The sources do not establish a breed-specific incidence figure or a treatment price for cardiac disease in Alaskan Klee Kai. A screening recommendation should not be interpreted as proof that your dog requires a cardiologist or lifelong cardiac medication. If an examination finds an abnormality, your veterinarian can explain whether an echocardiogram, referral or monitoring is appropriate and provide the relevant estimate.
Eye disorders
The club recommends an eye examination by a boarded ACVO ophthalmologist, with the result entered in OFA records or documented through an international ophthalmological examination. No breed-specific prevalence or current treatment-cost benchmark is established in the available material. Ask whether an examination is being performed for a breeding record, because of a clinical sign, or both; those purposes can involve different timing and follow-up.

Factor VII deficiency testing is optional in the AKKCOA statement and included in the AKC recommendations. It is a DNA screening test for breeding records. The cited sources do not give a breed prevalence estimate or a treatment budget, so it should not be converted into an assumed annual expense for every Alaskan Klee Kai.

What to budget before you bring a puppy home
Separate predictable care from an emergency reserve. Predictable costs include wellness examinations, vaccinations, parasite prevention, identification, dental care and any testing your veterinarian considers appropriate. The breed-specific information adds screening questions, but it does not support a single annual or lifetime reserve number.
Use the parents’ records to refine uncertainty
Ask the breeder for the registered names of the sire and dam and copies of the club-recommended screening results. Search those names in OFA’s public records where results are available. Read the actual result rather than relying on a statement that the parents are “health tested.”
OFA explains that Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) certification follows the screening protocol set by the breed parent club and requires the results to be public. CHIC does not mean every result is normal. The AKKCOA’s 2024 statement puts it this way: “For CHIC certification, all results do not need to be normal, but they must all be in the public domain so that responsible breeders can make more informed breeding decisions.” OFA also cautions that a screening list is not all-encompassing.

Keep screening fees separate from medical bills
OFA’s fee page lists $15 registry fees for thyroid, basic cardiac, advanced cardiac database, patellar luxation, DNA-based result and eye-certification registry entries. The page says those prices took effect January 1, 2022. These are fees to record results in a registry, not the price of the veterinarian’s examination, laboratory work, imaging or treatment. A breeder may incur all of those clinical costs separately, and a pet owner should not use the $15 figure as a health-care budget.
How to build a practical reserve without a false breed-wide number
Because no authoritative source supplies an Alaskan Klee Kai annual or lifetime medical reserve, use a process rather than a headline figure.
- List routine care. Ask your own veterinarian for the expected cost of examinations, vaccines, parasite prevention, dental assessment and any age-appropriate tests in your region.
- Add a diagnostic cushion. Set aside money for an unplanned examination and basic diagnostics. The amount should reflect your household’s ability to pay and local clinic pricing, not an unverified breed average.
- Model a diagnosed condition separately. If a patellar problem is found, request a written plan showing whether management or surgery is advised, whether one or both knees are involved and what follow-up is included.
- Revisit the plan annually. Update it after each veterinary visit, a move to a different region or any change in your dog’s medical history.
- Ask about payment timing. A clinic can explain which services are due at the initial visit and which are expected during rechecks, allowing you to avoid confusing a one-time bill with a recurring cost.
Some owners investigate pet-insurance policies as one way to manage unexpected veterinary costs. Policy terms, exclusions for prior or hereditary conditions, waiting periods, reimbursement limits and local availability vary. The available sources do not verify any insurer’s current terms, so obtain and read a policy’s actual contract before relying on it.
How to compare estimates if patellar luxation is diagnosed
A low headline price is not necessarily the least expensive or most appropriate plan. When comparing written estimates, check the same items in each quote:

| Item to compare | Why it changes the total |
|---|---|
| One knee or both | PetMD’s $1,000–$3,000 benchmark is per affected knee; bilateral disease can require a different plan and timing. |
| Severity and examination findings | Mild cases may be managed medically, while severe or persistent cases may lead to surgery. |
| Diagnostics | Imaging or additional tests may be recommended before anesthesia or to investigate another source of lameness. |
| Provider and location | Hospital, surgeon, staffing and regional prices vary; the published range is a broad U.S. estimate. |
| What the estimate includes | Confirm anesthesia, medications, hospitalization, rechecks and any rehabilitation advice are identified rather than assumed. |
| Recovery schedule | Post-surgical rechecks are part of care and may create additional visits and charges. |
Ask the clinic to state what would cause the estimate to change and whom to call if recovery does not follow the expected course. This turns a general internet benchmark into a plan tied to your dog.
Questions to take to a breeder and veterinarian
For the breeder
- What are the registered names of the sire and dam?
- Can I see the patellar, thyroid, cardiac and eye results recommended by the parent club?
- Was Factor VII DNA testing performed, and if so, what does the result state?
- Are the results publicly searchable in OFA records, and is there a CHIC record?
- Were any results abnormal, inconclusive or pending, and what follow-up was done?
- What health history is documented for close relatives?
For your veterinarian
- Which examinations or tests are appropriate for this dog’s age, symptoms and intended use?
- Is a recommendation for screening being made for breeding documentation or because of a clinical concern?
- What would a diagnostic workup cost if a sign such as lameness, exercise intolerance, bleeding or vision change appears?
- If a condition is diagnosed, what are the management options, likely follow-up visits and warning signs that require urgent care?
What the available evidence cannot tell you
There is no authoritative prevalence table for the listed conditions in Alaskan Klee Kai, no complete current treatment-price schedule covering thyroid, cardiac or eye disease and no defensible breed-wide annual or lifetime health reserve. The PetMD patellar-surgery figure is one general U.S. benchmark, and the OFA figures are dated registry-submission fees. Use them only in their stated context.
The most responsible budget is therefore a flexible one: fund routine preventive care, maintain an emergency cushion, verify the parents’ public records and obtain current written estimates from the veterinarian treating your individual dog. That approach acknowledges the breed club’s screening priorities without assuming that every Alaskan Klee Kai will develop a screened condition.
