Mackerel is commonly called Ayala (അയല) in Malayalam; Ayila is another transliteration. The name usually refers to Indian mackerel, Rastrelliger kanagurta.
The Malayalam name for mackerel
For Indian mackerel, the practical Malayalam name is Ayala, also written Ayila (അയല). The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) identifies Ayila as the Malayalam vernacular name for Rastrelliger kanagurta, while a Kerala fish-name guide uses Ayala.

When you need to identify the species precisely—for example, when reading a fish list or checking a label—use the scientific name Rastrelliger kanagurta alongside the local name. CMFRI and the Onmanorama Kerala fish-name guide support these name forms.

Names that can be confused
“Mackerel” may be used loosely in English, but Kerala fisheries references distinguish Indian mackerel from other mackerels and from seerfish, including Spanish mackerels.
