Pufferfish lay eggs, but where they lay them, how many they produce, and whether a parent guards them depend on the species. Captive studies document several different patterns; they do not establish one rule for every pufferfish.
Where do pufferfish lay their eggs?
The spawning site varies. Depending on the species and conditions, eggs may be placed on a flat surface or spawning bed, scattered over sand or plants, or left on the bottom of a tank. These examples come from studies of particular freshwater species in captivity, so they should not be treated as a description of every wild pufferfish.

- Southeast Asian Pao puffers: A captive study of six species described spawning beds such as an earthenware pipe or sunken driftwood with a flat surface, where eggs could be laid in a single layer. Aquaculture Science / J-STAGE
- Ocellated pufferfish (Leiodon cutcutia): The female laid eggs on a spawning bed in a territory established by the male. The eggs were described as spherical, translucent, bottom-associated, and adhesive. Aquaculture Science / J-STAGE
- African freshwater pufferfish (Tetraodon schoutedeni): In eight captive spawning sessions, pairs swam together before releasing eggs that were scattered over sandy substrate or water plants. The eggs were spherical and weakly adhesive. PubMed

How many eggs do pufferfish lay?
There is no single typical clutch size established for pufferfish as a group. Published captive studies report very different counts for different species and breeding conditions:

These figures describe the studies and species listed, not a family-wide range or prediction for a particular fish in an aquarium. In particular, the green pufferfish result followed induced reproduction, while the Amazon puffer figures came from two females in an induced captive study.

Do pufferfish guard their eggs?
Parental care also differs among the documented species. In a captive study of ocellated pufferfish, the male marked a territory, the female laid eggs on the spawning bed, and the male guarded them afterward. In the induced green pufferfish study, the parents did not protect the eggs after spawning. Neither observation supports a rule for all pufferfish.
How long do pufferfish eggs take to hatch?
The six-species Pao study reported hatching in 7–10 days under its captive conditions. That interval is specific to the species and study; the evidence here does not establish a universal pufferfish incubation period.

What this means for aquarium owners
A spawning pipe or flat shelter may be relevant for some captive Pao puffers because those surfaces were used in the study. It is not evidence that the same setup suits other species. The T. schoutedeni study also notes that removing tank companions that might eat eggs and providing suitably small initial food for larvae mattered to successful breeding. Before attempting breeding, check guidance for the exact species rather than applying one pufferfish recipe.
