Tilapia fish belong to Kingdom Animalia, the animal kingdom. The name “tilapia” covers several related freshwater cichlid fishes, so the exact genus and species depend on which tilapia is meant.
Tilapia fish belong to Kingdom Animalia, the animal kingdom. More specifically, tilapias are freshwater cichlid fishes. However, “tilapia” is not the scientific name of one species: the common name covers related fishes in several genera, including Oreochromis, Sarotherodon, and Tilapia.

What is the classification of tilapia?
Because tilapia is a group rather than a single species, the exact classification below the kingdom level depends on which species is being discussed. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a useful representative example.

Why “tilapia” is not one species
“Tilapia” is a common name used for an assemblage of related African and Levantine cichlid fishes. Fisheries references commonly use the term for members of the genera Oreochromis, Sarotherodon, and Tilapia, all associated with the tilapia group within family Cichlidae. The Food and Agriculture Organization’s overview of tilapias describes this broader usage.
As a result, it is accurate to say that tilapias are animals, but it is not accurate to claim that every fish called tilapia is the same species or even belongs to the same genus. A fish sold or described simply as “tilapia” may need a scientific name before its precise classification can be established.

What each major rank means
- Animalia: Tilapia are animals, not plants, fungi, or bacteria. They are multicellular and obtain energy by consuming organic matter.
- Chordata: They belong to the chordate lineage and, as vertebrates, have the defining internal features associated with vertebrate animals.
- Vertebrata: Tilapia are vertebrate fish with a backbone.
- Actinopterygii: They are ray-finned fishes, the major group that includes most familiar modern fish species.
- Cichlidae: They are cichlids, a diverse family of fishes that includes many species from Africa and other regions.
- Oreochromis, Sarotherodon, and Tilapia: These are among the principal genera associated with the common name tilapia.
Cichliformes or Perciformes?
You may see different orders listed for tilapia. The current NCBI lineage for Oreochromis niloticus uses Cichliformes. Older references and some fisheries literature, including FAO material, may place cichlids within the broader order Perciformes.

What is the correct scientific name for Nile tilapia?
The accepted name used in the cited NCBI record is Oreochromis niloticus. The older name Tilapia nilotica appears as a homotypic synonym, so it may occur in historical or older sources, but it is not the preferred current name in that record.
