The Biewer Terrier Club of America’s current core screens are an ACVO eye examination, PRA-prcd DNA testing, PLL DNA testing, and a patellar-luxation evaluation registered with OFA. A CHIC number can show that required results were entered, but it is not a health guarantee.
The questions below help you compare breeders on evidence and practices rather than photographs, registration claims, price, or promises.

Start with the parents’ health records
Ask the breeder to show the actual reports for the sire and dam, not just a statement that the dogs are “health tested.” Request the registered names or permanent identifiers on each report, the test date, the examining professional or laboratory, and instructions for checking the result in an independent database. Make sure the paperwork belongs to the parents of the litter you are considering.
Core screenings listed by the parent club
The Biewer Terrier Club of America’s health statement approved December 17, 2025, identifies four core screens to discuss with a breeder:
#1 Best Overall
- Dog multivitamins chewable for skin & coat : Dog multivitamin is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E,which can relieve skin allergies, dryness, itching and other problems.Multivitamin for dogs nourishes skin follicles.Long-term consumption of dog vitamins multivitamin can make dog hair stronger and smoother, and reduce coat loss. The COQ10 in dog multivitamin chewable can resist oxidation and delay cell aging.Dogs with skin injuries can eat dog vitamins and supplements to promote wound healing

When training puppies to learn basic commands, puppies who are properly supplemented with dog vitamins multivitamin will behave more intelligently and improve memory.Dog supplements & vitamins can prevent and relieve eye problems such as dry eyes and tear stains, and keep eyes healthy
- Eye examination by a boarded ACVO ophthalmologist. Ask for the ophthalmologist’s report and the examination date. An ordinary veterinary check is not the same as a specialist examination.
- PRA-prcd DNA test. Confirm that the sample was processed by an approved laboratory and ask how the result is classified for each parent.
- PLL DNA test. Again, ask for the laboratory report rather than a verbal “clear” claim.
- Patellar luxation evaluation. The club specifies a veterinary evaluation with results registered with OFA. Ask to see the recorded result and the dog’s identity in the listing.
Ask whether any result is pending, expired, unavailable, or performed under a different name. A breeder who cannot produce the record should not be treated as having completed the screen simply because a website says “health tested.”
Optional evaluations are not the same as core screens
The club also lists cardiac evaluation, Legg-Calve-Perthes evaluation, serum bile acid testing, degenerative myelopathy testing, and hyperuricosuria testing as optional evaluations. Ask which of these were performed and why, but keep the categories clear: an optional test can add information, while its absence does not mean the breeder skipped one of the club’s listed core screens.
| Evaluation | How to discuss it |
|---|---|
| ACVO eye examination | Request the specialist’s written report and date for each parent. |
| PRA-prcd DNA | Request the approved-laboratory report and the parent’s registered identity. |
| PLL DNA | Request the approved-laboratory report and interpretation. |
| Patellar evaluation | Check that the veterinary result is registered with OFA. |
| Cardiac, Legg-Calve-Perthes, serum bile acid, degenerative myelopathy, hyperuricosuria | These are listed by the club as optional; ask whether they were done and review any reports supplied. |
Verify what a database record actually means
OFA and CHIC listings can help you confirm that records were submitted under the correct dog. Ask the breeder for permission to search the registered name or identifier yourself, and compare the database entry with the documents you were shown.

A CHIC number is a record, not a promise
A CHIC number indicates that the required health tests for that breed have been entered into the database. It does not mean every result was normal, and it does not guarantee that the dog or a future puppy will be healthy. The American Kennel Club explains that normal results are automatically public, while abnormal results may be publicly listed or withheld by the owner. Therefore, ask to see the underlying reports and the interpretation of every test, not only a CHIC number or a “CHIC certified” description.
Questions that expose gaps in a health history
- What are the registered names and identifiers of both parents?
- Which laboratory, specialist, or veterinarian performed each test?
- On what date was each test completed?
- Can I match the report to an OFA or other public listing?
- Were any results abnormal, inconclusive, or withheld from public display?
- Have either parent, an earlier puppy, or a close relative needed treatment for a condition not covered by the core screens?
A responsible answer can include uncertainty. A breeder should be able to explain what a test can and cannot detect instead of presenting a normal result as proof that no inherited problem is possible.

Ask about conditions the breeder has actually observed
The parent club notes retained baby teeth, tartar buildup, and recurring gastrointestinal sensitivity as observations in the breed. The club does not publish prevalence figures or a complete disease-risk assessment for these issues. Ask whether either parent or previous puppies experienced them, at what age, what a veterinarian found, and what care was required.
Useful follow-up questions include:
- Did a puppy need extraction of retained baby teeth?
- What dental-care routine did the veterinarian recommend?
- Have puppies had repeated diarrhea, vomiting, food intolerance, or unexplained appetite changes?
- Were symptoms resolved by a diet change, medication, diagnostic testing, or referral?
- Will the contract disclose a known family history or require notification if a related dog develops a problem?
Do not turn the club’s limited observations into a claim that Biewer Terriers are free of inherited disease. You are looking for candor, records, and a plan for veterinary follow-up.
Meet the mother and inspect the raising environment
Ask to meet the dam and, when practical, the sire. Seeing the mother can confirm that she is present, allow you to observe her condition and behavior, and help you understand the adult size and coat you may be raising. A breeder may use reasonable disease-control precautions, such as limiting visitors or arranging a controlled viewing, but should explain those precautions rather than refusing all meaningful access.
What to observe in the home or kennel
- Are the puppies clean, alert, and provided with appropriate bedding, food, water, and safe room to move?
- Does the breeder identify each puppy and keep individual veterinary records?
- Can the breeder describe the litter’s daily handling and exposure to ordinary household sounds and routines?
- Are adult dogs treated as living companions or hidden from visitors?
- Does the breeder answer questions directly and allow time for you to think?
Ask for a description of the puppies’ handling: being picked up, having paws and ears touched, hearing household noises, meeting visitors, and experiencing grooming-related handling. The exact program may vary, but a breeder should be able to tell you what has been done, how puppies responded, and what the new owner should continue.
References matter more than polished presentation
Request contact information for several previous puppy buyers, subject to those buyers’ consent. Ask references whether the dog arrived with the promised records, whether the breeder honored the contract, how the dog’s temperament developed, and whether the breeder remained available after the sale.

Myrna Torres made that warning in an American Kennel Club article about the Biewer Terrier. A professional-looking site can be useful for basic information, but it cannot substitute for references, records, and access to the litter’s real conditions.
Discuss temperament and household fit
Ask what the breeder has observed about each puppy, not just which one has the most attractive markings. Request specific examples of how the puppies respond to people, children, other dogs, confinement, handling, and new environments. Ask how the parents behave around visitors, grooming, routine veterinary care, and other animals.
The AKC characterizes Biewers as dedicated and loyal. Breed advocates also describe a combination of lap-dog tendencies and terrier-like hunting instincts. Those are broad breed descriptions, not predictions for an individual puppy. Ask the breeder to connect the general description to the particular puppy:
- Which puppy seeks human contact, and which prefers more independence?
- How does each puppy recover after a startle or interruption?
- Does any puppy guard food, toys, or resting places?
- How do the puppies respond to brushing, nail handling, ear examination, and being carried?
- What energy level and play style has the breeder seen?
Explain your own household honestly: children’s ages, other pets, work schedule, travel, stairs, noise level, and expectations for a lap companion or active small dog. A breeder who says every puppy suits every home is giving you less useful information than one who identifies a mismatch.

Make grooming part of the buying decision
The current breed-club standard describes a long, flowing, silky coat. AKC guidance says a full long coat generally requires daily or every-other-day grooming, while a short puppy cut needs weekly brushing. Ask the breeder to demonstrate the routine and explain what the puppy is already learning.
Questions about the coat
- Is the puppy being raised in a full coat or a shorter trim?
- How often should the coat be brushed at the puppy’s current age?
- Which brush, comb, detangling method, and bathing schedule does the breeder use?
- How are the face, ears, feet, sanitary area, and tail maintained?
- When should a professional groomer become part of the routine?
- What signs of matting, skin irritation, ear trouble, or painful tangles should prompt a veterinary visit?
A soft pin brush suitable for a long-haired dog is a reasonable basic tool, but the larger issue is time and consistency. If you cannot maintain daily or every-other-day brushing for a long coat, discuss a short puppy cut and its weekly-brushing requirement before choosing a puppy. Coat length should never be treated as a minor cosmetic decision.
Ask how the breeder uses the breed standard
The current Biewer Terrier standard describes an elegant, longhaired, tri-colored toy terrier with a distinctive breed-signature ponytail. It generally calls for a dog 8 to 10 inches at the withers; height over 11 inches is identified as a serious fault. The standard accepts a slightly longer-than-tall or square proportion and emphasizes a long, flowing coat.
The latest revision was approved February 5, 2026, and became effective April 30, 2026. Ask whether the breeder is working from this current version and how the program balances structure, health, temperament, and appearance. A conversation about show quality can help you understand the breeder’s goals, but show-standard criteria do not replace health records or a discussion of whether the puppy fits your home.

Questions that keep appearance in perspective
- How do you select for stable temperament and sound movement alongside color and coat?
- What structural traits are you monitoring in the parents?
- How do you explain the expected adult size without promising an exact weight or height?
- Are you breeding for a manageable companion or making claims based mainly on show potential?
Be cautious of guarantees about adult size, perfect markings, or future titles. A standard describes the ideal type; it cannot guarantee how an individual puppy will mature.

Read the contract before paying a deposit
Request the complete written purchase contract before sending money. Do not rely on a summary in a text message or a promise that “the paperwork will come later.” Contract terms and legal protections vary by breeder and location, so read every clause and ask questions in writing.
Items to check
- Price and deposit: Confirm the total price, deposit amount, whether the deposit is refundable, and the conditions for cancellation or a changed match.
- Veterinary records: Check what examinations, vaccinations, parasite treatments, microchip information, and dates will be supplied at pickup.
- Registration paperwork: Clarify what registration documents are included, when they will be delivered, and whether any limitations apply.
- Health guarantee: Identify the covered conditions, time limits, required veterinary examinations, remedies, and exclusions. A guarantee is a contract term, not proof that a puppy cannot become ill.
- Return or rehoming policy: Find out whether the breeder must be contacted if you can no longer keep the dog, whether the dog must be returned, and who pays transport or veterinary costs.
- Breeding or co-ownership restrictions: Understand spay/neuter language, breeding permissions, ownership shares, and any required approvals.
- Post-sale support: Ask how the breeder handles feeding questions, grooming problems, behavior concerns, and urgent situations after the puppy goes home.
Have a veterinarian or qualified legal adviser review unfamiliar clauses, especially if the contract imposes arbitration, broad waivers, or unusual ownership restrictions. Keep a signed copy and every attachment.
Compare breeders with an evidence-based scorecard
Use the same questions with every breeder so that an attractive website or an emotional first call does not dominate your decision. Record documents and answers rather than relying on memory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Comparison area | Strong evidence | Warning sign |

| Litter access | Reasonable opportunity to meet the mother and see or safely view the raising environment. | No meaningful access and no clear health-based explanation. |
| References | Several previous buyers willing to discuss their experience. | Refusal to provide references or pressure to decide immediately. |

Red flags that should stop the conversation
One concern may have an innocent explanation, but several together justify walking away. Pause the purchase if a breeder:
- Refuses to show parent records or will not identify the testing laboratory or specialist.
- Uses a CHIC number as if it proves normal results or guarantees the puppy’s future health.
- Offers only stock photographs and will not provide references or a real-time view of the litter.
- Pressures you to send a deposit before providing the contract.
- Cannot describe the puppies’ daily handling, veterinary care, or individual behavior.
- Dismisses questions about retained teeth, tartar, gastrointestinal sensitivity, or other family history.
- Promises an exact adult size, perfect temperament, or freedom from all inherited disease.
- Has no written return or rehoming plan if you can no longer keep the dog.
Do not let a nonrefundable deposit convert unanswered questions into a commitment. A transparent breeder should expect careful buyers.
Prepare your own household before choosing
Bring your answers to the breeder, too. Decide who will brush the dog, how often grooming can realistically happen, which veterinarian will provide routine care, and how the puppy will be supervised during work, school, travel, and holidays. Budget for routine veterinary care, grooming, training, food, equipment, and unexpected treatment without assuming that a breeder guarantee or insurance will cover hereditary conditions.
Ask whether your schedule allows a small terrier with both companion-dog attachment and terrier instincts. Discuss prey drive, barking, exercise, socialization, and handling expectations with everyone who will live with the dog. The best breeder conversation is a two-way assessment: you verify the program, and the breeder decides whether your home is appropriate.
