What to Ask a Cat Shelter Before You Adopt

Before adopting a cat, ask the shelter for health records, specific behavior observations, known history, ownership-transfer details, and a clear breakdown of fees and follow-up care.

Before adopting, ask the shelter what it knows about the cat’s health, behavior, background, and care—and what remains uncertain. Request records and specific observations rather than relying on assumptions. A shelter’s answers can help you judge whether the cat may suit your household and prepare for a smooth handoff, even when its history is incomplete.

Ask about health and veterinary care

Ask for the cat’s dated veterinary records. A brief conversation is not a substitute for documentation, and the shelter may not have a complete medical history.

  • Has a veterinarian examined the cat? What did the exam find, and were any treatments or follow-up recommended?
  • Which vaccinations and parasite treatments has the cat received? Can you take copies of the records?
  • Does the cat take medication, eat a special diet, or have a known ongoing condition?
  • What care has already been provided, and what should I discuss at the first veterinary appointment?

For a kitten, ask about its mother’s health and any known hereditary concerns as well as the kitten’s own veterinary checks and records. Cats Protection’s kitten checklist covers these topics.

Make a veterinary appointment after adoption even if the shelter gives you records. The ASPCA’s cat-care guidance recommends a post-adoption check; your veterinarian can assess your individual cat and advise on diet and care.

Ask what the cat is like—and how the shelter knows

Ask what staff or foster caregivers have observed, and in what setting. Useful details include how the cat responds to handling, play, hiding, activity, litter-box use, people, and other animals. Also ask what helps the cat feel comfortable and what kind of home the shelter thinks may suit it.

  • Has the cat spent time in a foster home? What did the caregiver notice there?
  • Are these details from a previous owner, a staff observation, a foster caregiver, or another source?
  • Have different people seen similar behavior, or is the information based on one interaction?
  • What introductions or settling-in approach might help in my household?

These questions matter because surrender information can lack context. The ASPCA’s shelter-responsibilities policy recommends using multiple sources of behavior information, including observations by staff, volunteers, and foster caregivers. Shelter behavior is only a snapshot; it cannot guarantee how a cat will act at home.

If the cat may have lived outdoors or be a community cat, ask about its history and socialization with people rather than inferring its needs from a brief encounter. The ASPCA notes that a shy or frightened community cat may not be suited to indoor life, and that a friendly appearance alone does not establish readiness for adoption. That guidance is relevant when the cat’s background supports the question; it is not a reason to label an individual shelter cat without evidence. See the ASPCA’s guidance on community cats.

Clarify the cat’s background and what is unknown

Ask where the cat came from, how long it has been in care, and whether it previously lived with children or other animals. Find out whether the cat spent time in foster care and what the caregiver observed. For kittens, ask what is known about their mother and early environment.

The ASPCA policy notes that information provided at surrender may be incomplete; Cats Protection’s kitten guidance also encourages questions about the mother, health, care, and early environment.

Confirm spay or neuter status and identification

Ask whether the cat has been spayed or neutered and whether it has a microchip. If it is chipped, ask how the registration and adoption records will be transferred or updated, and confirm what proof of ownership you will receive. Check which licensing or identification rules apply where you live.

Find out what the adoption fee covers

Ask for an itemized explanation of the fee and any services included. Confirm whether medication, planned follow-up care, or other treatment is covered, and ask what known condition-related costs you should expect. Do not assume that another shelter’s fee or package applies: services and fees vary by organization.

Budget for care beyond the initial adoption. Veterinary expenses can include routine check-ups and, when needed, procedures or tests such as sterilization surgery, X-rays, and blood tests. The ASPCA discusses veterinary costs as a factor in pet retention in its spay/neuter position statement; ask your shelter and veterinarian about the costs relevant to this cat.

Plan transport and the first days at home

Ask what food the cat is eating, whether the shelter has written transition advice, and what transport arrangement it recommends. A secure cat carrier is a practical way to bring the cat home and take it to the veterinary appointment. The ASPCA recommends a post-adoption veterinary visit in its cat-care guidance.

Compare cats and shelters by the information you can use

If you are choosing among cats or organizations, compare the clarity and usefulness of the answers—not just the number of details available. Adoption programs vary, and conversation-based matching is one approach described by the ASPCA.

What to compare What useful information looks like
Care transparency Dated records, clear medication and follow-up details, and a distinction between known and unknown history.
Observed fit Specific behavior observations from more than one source where possible, connected to the kind of household the cat may suit.
Ownership handoff Clear spay/neuter status, microchip details, and steps for updating registration and adoption records.
Cost clarity A clear list of services included in the fee and known foreseeable care needs, rather than the fee amount alone.

A quick checklist to bring to the conversation

  • Can I have the dated veterinary, vaccination, and parasite-treatment records?
  • What conditions, medications, diet needs, or follow-up care are known?
  • What have staff or foster caregivers observed, and where did they observe it?
  • What is known about the cat’s prior home, socialization, and time in foster care?
  • Is the cat spayed or neutered and microchipped, and how will ownership records be updated?
  • What does the fee include, and what foreseeable costs should I plan for?
  • What food and settling-in advice should I follow, and what transport does the shelter recommend?
