What to Do If a Bird Hits Your Window: Safe Steps and Prevention

Keep people and pets away, avoid food and water, and call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for abnormal signs or any safely contained bird. Then make the outside of the window visible with a close-spaced pattern, screen, netting, or another bird-safe retrofit.

A bird just hit your window? Keep people and pets back, watch from a short distance, and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator if the bird is dazed, injured, or can be safely contained. Do not feed it or pour water into its beak. If it appears uninjured, protect it from traffic, predators, and weather while it recovers. Then treat the outside of the window: a close, continuous pattern, screen, net, or other exterior treatment can prevent the next collision.

What to do immediately, in order

1. Make the area safe

Move children, dogs, cats, and other observers away. Do not crowd the bird, repeatedly touch it, or test its reactions. Watch from a short distance for breathing and movement. Owls, hawks, falcons, and other raptors can injure a well-meaning rescuer with their beaks or talons; the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) advises contacting professionals for these birds. See the FWS January 29, 2025 bird-window-collision fact sheet.

2. Decide whether it is exposed or apparently uninjured

A bird sitting still is not necessarily dead or unharmed. Glass reflects sky and vegetation, and a collision can cause internal or neurological injury that is not obvious. If the bird is alert and apparently uninjured, it can have a chance to recover only in a protected location. A bird on a driveway, road, porch edge, or open lawn may need to be moved a short distance to shelter from traffic, predators, and bad weather—but move it only if you can do so safely. If safe relocation is not possible, call a rehabilitator instead. FWS describes this approach in its building-and-glass collision guidance.

3. Treat abnormal signs as an emergency

Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator promptly if you see blood, swelling around either eye, difficulty holding the head up, eyes that remain closed, labored breathing, inability to stand, or a wing held at an abnormal angle. A bird that flies away can still have a serious hidden injury, so flight alone is not proof of recovery. As Sunny Kellner, a wildlife rehabilitation and outreach specialist at Sharon Audubon Center, explains: “A lay person isn’t going to know or recognize all the signs of various bird injuries and certainly wouldn’t be able to provide the proper medical treatment.” Audubon’s window-strike guidance and the FWS fact sheet list these warning signs.

4. Contain it only when necessary

If a professional asks you to transport the bird, or the bird is clearly injured and can be captured without putting you at risk, approach slowly, ideally from behind. Use a small, closed paper bag or a cardboard box lined with tissue or paper towel. The container should limit movement and stimulation, not provide room for the bird to fly around. Keep it dark, quiet, and away from people and pets. Handle it as little as possible and ask the rehabilitator for transport instructions.

Never offer food, milk, or water. A stunned bird may not be able to swallow normally, and water poured into the beak can enter the lungs. Forced feeding can also delay professional treatment. Mass Audubon’s injured-bird guidance recommends minimal handling and referral to a rehabilitator.

5. Follow local expert advice if help is not immediately reachable

Guidance differs for a bird that appears only mildly stunned and later becomes active. Cornell Lab of Ornithology says the bird’s best chance is immediate rehabilitation help. Audubon describes a quiet, undisturbed observation period of about an hour as a fallback when no rehabilitator is available, while warning that release does not guarantee recovery. Use that only as a constrained fallback and follow local wildlife-authority instructions; do not treat a wait-and-release interval as a cure or a substitute for care. The relevant Cornell explanation is in Why Birds Hit Windows—and How You Can Help Prevent It.

How to tell whether you should call a rehabilitator

  • Call promptly: the bird is dazed, cannot stand, cannot hold its head up, keeps its eyes closed, has blood or eye swelling, breathes with effort, or has a drooping or twisted-looking wing.
  • Call before handling a raptor: owls and birds of prey can inflict serious injuries even when they appear weak.
  • Call when you are uncertain: internal injuries and concussion-like neurological problems may not be visible, and a bird may fly briefly despite being badly hurt.
  • Use a licensed local service: ask the rehabilitator, wildlife authority, or animal-control agency where you live for the correct capture and transport procedure.

In the United States, FWS notes that under 50 CFR 21.31(a), a person who finds an injured bird may pick it up only if the intention is to take it immediately to a rehabilitator. State, tribal, and local rules can add requirements. Outside the U.S., or whenever the legal position is unclear, contact your local wildlife authority or licensed rehabilitator before handling.

Safe containment and transport

  1. Prepare first. Have a small box or paper bag, clean paper towels, and a secure, quiet place ready before approaching.
  2. Reduce stimulation. Ask everyone else to leave. Close nearby doors and keep pets in another room.
  3. Approach slowly from behind. Avoid chasing the bird. If it can fly strongly and is not showing abnormal signs, stop and seek professional advice rather than escalating the capture.
  4. Cover and place. Gently cover a small bird with a light towel if a rehabilitator has advised capture, then place it in the lined container. Do not squeeze the chest; birds need chest movement to breathe.
  5. Close and darken the container. Make sure there is ventilation, but no opening large enough for escape. Do not add a perch, seed, or water dish.
  6. Keep conditions stable. Put the container in a quiet, moderately warm indoor location, away from sunlight, heaters, air-conditioning blasts, children, and animals. Do not open it repeatedly to check.
  7. Call for hand-off instructions. Tell the rehabilitator the species if known, time and location of impact, visible signs, and whether the bird was already contained. Follow the service’s directions for delivery.

Do not manipulate an apparently unconscious bird to perform a “test.” Rita McMahon, director of Wild Bird Fund in New York City, notes that birds can go into rigor very quickly, but a layperson should not handle an injured bird to diagnose death. Leave that assessment to a professional.

Why birds hit windows

Birds do not perceive a clear pane as a solid wall in the way people do. Reflections can look like open sky, trees, or a safe flight route. Plants and landscaping visible through the glass can appear to be habitat on the other side. Interior lighting can make a window more attractive or obscure its boundary, especially at night. The FWS explains these collision mechanisms in its collisions overview; Cornell discusses the same visual confusion in its bird-window article.

  • Instructions: 1.Spray some water on the glass surface, 2. Peel off window stickers along the black line from the film sheet, 3. Stick the smooth side of the clings to the glass

The scale is larger than a single household incident. Cornell attributes an estimate of up to about one billion bird deaths from window strikes in the United States each year to a 2014 study. That is a broad national estimate, not a count for an individual home, and it is why prevention matters even after a bird appears to recover. “Prevention is the best remedy,” says Jenith Flex, a Lehigh Valley Audubon Society board member and volunteer wildlife rehabilitator, in Audubon’s guidance.

Prevent another collision: treat the outside of the glass

The goal is to make the pane visibly occupied from the bird’s approach side, with no large clear gaps. FWS recommends an exterior pattern with spaces no more than 2 inches apart vertically and horizontally. Scattered stickers or a few decorative shapes can leave the dangerous openings between them. Check the entire pane from outdoors in daylight and at different times: a pattern that looks obvious from inside may disappear into an exterior reflection.

Exterior treatments generally perform better than markings placed only on the room side because they interrupt the reflection before the bird reaches the glass. The FWS Bird-Friendly Home Toolkit lists the following approaches.

Window-treatment options compared

Option How it prevents impact Visibility and durability Best fit and cautions
Exterior decals or patterned film Creates a close visual grid or other continuous pattern on the approach surface. Visible from outdoors; removable products can suit temporary homes, while exterior-rated film lasts longer. Useful for renters and quick retrofits. Follow the product’s coverage directions and verify the pattern from outside; a few widely spaced decals are insufficient.
Washable exterior paint or marker pattern Provides the same close-spaced visual barrier without replacing the pane. Usually inexpensive and removable, but weather and cleaning can wear it away. Good for testing a design or seasonal protection. Maintain spacing of no more than 2 inches in both directions.
External insect screen Places a resilient, visible layer in front of the glass so a bird contacts the screen rather than the hard pane. Durable when properly installed; remains visible outside. Works well on windows that can accept a frame. Leave enough stand-off for the screen to flex so impact is not transferred directly to glass.
Bird-safe netting Forms a physical barrier before the window. Can cover large areas, but requires careful tension and inspection. Use openings small enough to prevent entanglement and mount it far enough from the pane that a bird cannot hit hard glass through the net.
Paracord curtain Vertical cords create a dense exterior visual screen. Removable and adaptable to balconies or broad openings; exposed cord may need maintenance. Install with sufficiently close spacing across the whole risky area, not just at the center.
UV-reflective treatment Adds a pattern intended to be more visible to birds while preserving human view. Appearance and effectiveness depend on the product, lighting, and bird species. Follow the manufacturer’s exterior-application and coverage instructions; inspect for untreated gaps.
Fritted or patterned glass Permanent dots or lines break up the reflective surface. Durable and integrated into the glazing. Most appropriate during construction or replacement, because it is not a quick retrofit.
Exterior shading Awning, shade, or other structure reduces the reflection and blocks a direct flight path. Durable if properly installed; changes light and view. Useful where architecture permits. Treat remaining exposed panes as well.

These categories are practical comparisons, not a tested ranking of particular products. Choose by exterior visibility, complete close-spaced coverage, durability, removability, installation limits, reflection reduction, and whether a physical barrier is needed.

A step-by-step retrofit plan

  1. Identify the hazard. Mark the exact pane and note whether the bird approached a reflection, an indoor plant, a feeder, or a lit room. Inspect neighboring panes too; birds may use the same flight route.
  2. View from the bird’s side. Stand outside in morning, afternoon, and evening light. Look for sky, trees, or room reflections that remain visible through untreated areas.
  3. Select an exterior treatment. A removable patterned film or marker kit is practical for a rental or quick repair. Screens, netting, paracord, or a professional retrofit suit recurrent strikes or multiple windows. Permanent fritted glass is generally a replacement or construction decision.
  4. Cover the full risky pane. Apply a continuous pattern with no more than 2-inch vertical and horizontal spacing. Do not stop at the impact point or use a handful of isolated decorations.
  5. Check physical barriers. For screens and netting, create a stand-off so a bird can bounce safely rather than hit hard glass. Keep mesh openings small enough to avoid trapping toes, wings, or heads, and inspect regularly for sagging or tears.
  6. Recheck after installation. View the treatment from outside under bright sun and overcast conditions. Replace faded, peeled, or missing sections before the next migration or breeding season.

Lighting, landscaping, and feeders

Reduce nighttime attraction

Close curtains or blinds at night and turn off unnecessary indoor and exterior lights. Lighting can make glass harder to distinguish and can draw migrating birds toward buildings. The FWS toolkit includes reducing unnecessary nighttime lighting as part of bird-friendly home measures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manage reflections and interior attractants

Move indoor plants, hanging objects, or bright décor away from panes when they appear to continue the illusion of habitat. Exterior shading can reduce a strong reflection, but it does not replace a close-spaced treatment on exposed glass.

  • It is a long-lasting self-adhesive backing that fit for smooth surface glass doors and windows.

Be cautious with feeder-distance rules

Published advice is not uniform. The FWS fact sheet dated January 29, 2025 suggests placing feeders, baths, or houses 3 feet or less from a window. Cornell’s article says earlier “safe distance” recommendations are no longer considered valid. Because the guidance conflicts, do not treat one distance as a universal guarantee; prioritize making the glass itself visible and ask a local bird expert about your specific setup.

Should you report the collision?

Recording repeated strikes can reveal a building or window that needs a broader retrofit. Audubon identifies iNaturalist and NYC Audubon’s dBird as reporting options. Choose a tool that operates in your region, and record the date, window location, species if known, outcome, and any prevention already installed. A report is useful documentation, not a replacement for veterinary or rehabilitation care.

Key mistakes to avoid

  • Do not let children or pets approach a stunned bird.
  • Do not handle a raptor without professional direction.
  • Do not assume that a bird that flies away is fully recovered.
  • Do not force food or water into the mouth.
  • Do not leave an injured bird in a bright, noisy room or open the container repeatedly.
  • Do not rely on a few widely spaced decals; untreated gaps can remain collision paths.
  • Do not put a screen or net directly against the pane where impact can still be hard, and do not use mesh with openings that can entangle a bird.
  • Do not use a feeder-distance rule as your only prevention measure while the window remains reflective.

When the bird is gone: what to do next

Once the bird has been handed to a rehabilitator, released under local expert advice, or the scene is otherwise clear, inspect the window and nearby panes the same day. Clean glass can restore a strong reflection, so cleaning alone does not solve the hazard. Install or refresh an exterior pattern, screen, net, cord curtain, UV treatment, fritted glazing, or shade, and reduce night lighting. If strikes continue, treat additional panes along the same flight path and consult a bird-friendly building professional or wildlife authority.
