Keep people and pets back, leave the bird alone, and do not feed, touch, approach, or try to capture it. If it appears healthy, watch from a distance and let it leave; if it looks sick, injured, or dead, keep everyone away and contact the appropriate wildlife agency.
What to do during a routine visit
These recommendations apply most directly to the California condor, the species covered by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) homeowner guidance. California condors are reintroduced in parts of California, near the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and in Baja California, so the right reporting contact depends on where you are.

- Keep children, visitors, and pets well away. Do not approach for a closer look or photo.
- Do not offer food or water, and do not touch or handle the bird. USFWS states: “Never feed or touch a condor.”
- Let a healthy-looking bird leave on its own. If you can see its wing tag without moving closer, note the tag’s color and number, along with the time and location, and report the sighting to the relevant condor recovery program. USFWS’s California condor profile links to Condor Spotter.
USFWS homeowner guidance is available in “What to do if the California condor visits your home”. A condor can have a wingspan of 9.5 feet and weigh up to 25 pounds, according to the USFWS profile; do not use its apparent calmness or distance from you as a reason to get closer.
If the bird keeps perching or damages property
First remove things that may attract or endanger it. Secure garbage and recycling, remove accessible drinking water and seat cushions, and put away or protect loose or exposed wires where possible. Pick up small litter such as broken glass, bottle caps, and can tabs; condors can mistake such debris for food.

If a condor repeatedly perches or causes damage, USFWS says residents can persistently haze it by spraying it with water or making loud noises, such as yelling or clapping. A motion-activated scarecrow deterrent is another option. These measures are for discouraging lingering; do not chase, corner, or attempt to handle the bird.
If a condor appears sick, injured, or dead
Do not approach or touch it. Keep pets and other people away, then contact the wildlife authority responsible for your location. USFWS advises contacting the state wildlife agency about sick or dead animals.

If you hunt or manage livestock
Use non-lead ammunition where hunting is relevant. Lead fragments left in carcasses can poison condors that scavenge them. This is a prevention measure, not a reason to approach a bird you encounter.
