If your dog may have eaten cannabis or an edible, call your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or an animal poison-control service now—even if your dog seems normal. Keep the packaging and note when and how much your dog may have eaten. If the edible contains chocolate or xylitol, seek emergency veterinary care.

What to do right now

  1. Call for veterinary guidance promptly. Contact your veterinarian or nearest emergency hospital. In the United States, you can also call ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661. ASPCA says its service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply.
  2. Keep the product information. Bring the package or a clear photo of it. Tell the clinician whether it was plant material, an edible, concentrate, or oil; the likely amount; and when it was eaten. The THC concentration and other ingredients can affect the risk assessment.
  3. Check for additional hazards. If the edible contains chocolate or xylitol, go to an emergency veterinary hospital. High-fat butter or oils may also add risk and should be mentioned when you call.
  4. Follow the clinician’s instructions. Do not induce vomiting or give activated charcoal at home unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. In particular, a dog already showing signs should not be made to vomit or given charcoal without veterinary direction because sedation can develop quickly and create an aspiration risk.

Signs of cannabis exposure in dogs

Signs may begin within 30 minutes to several hours after ingestion and can persist for up to 72 hours, according to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s 2025 guidance. Do not wait for signs before calling.

  • Poor coordination, lethargy, sedation, or disorientation
  • Urinary dribbling
  • Unusual sensitivity to sound or touch
  • Dilated or glassy eyes
  • Vomiting or drooling
  • Abnormal heart rate or blood pressure, poor temperature regulation, tremors, seizures, or coma in more severe cases

Why the edible’s ingredients matter

An edible may expose a dog to more than cannabis. Chocolate and xylitol can cause separate toxic effects, so their presence changes the urgency; PetMD advises emergency veterinary care if an edible contains either ingredient. Butter and oils with high fat content are also relevant. Share the full ingredient list and packaging with the veterinary team rather than estimating the risk from the THC alone.

What treatment may involve

There is no home antidote for cannabis poisoning. Veterinary care is supportive and depends on the dog’s signs and the exposure. A veterinarian may recommend observation in a quiet, safe area for a mild exposure, while more serious cases may need hospital care. Do not rely on a human urine drug-screening test: Cornell notes that such tests are not reliable in dogs and can return false negatives.

Recovery and prevention

Most dogs recover fully in one to two days with appropriate care; recovery can take up to three days after a more severe exposure. Extremely high-dose ingestion is rarely fatal, but fatal cases have been reported. Store cannabis and edibles securely out of pets’ reach—such as in a closed, elevated cabinet or locked drawer—and do not leave them accessible.
