What to Do If Your Pet Touches a Stinging Caterpillar

Move your pet away from the caterpillar, prevent licking, and call a veterinarian for advice—especially after mouth or eye contact. Breathing trouble, marked swelling, or difficulty swallowing needs urgent veterinary care.

Move your pet away from the caterpillar, stop it from licking or touching the area, and contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for advice. Mouth or eye exposure needs particular caution; trouble breathing, marked swelling, difficulty swallowing, or rapidly worsening symptoms call for urgent veterinary care.

What to do first

  1. Separate your pet from the caterpillar. Move the animal away and keep it from investigating the caterpillar again. Prevent licking or rubbing, which could spread hairs from the affected area to the mouth or eyes. Avoid touching the caterpillar yourself.
  2. Work out where contact may have occurred. Note whether the pet touched it with skin, mouthed or swallowed it, or may have gotten hairs in an eye. More than one area may have been exposed. If you can identify the caterpillar without touching it or delaying care, share what you observed with the veterinarian; identification should not take priority over getting help.
  3. Call for case-specific advice. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or an animal poison-control service. Explain how the exposure happened, when it occurred, what signs you see, and your pet’s species and size. If you are uncertain whether the pet swallowed the caterpillar or got hairs in an eye, say so rather than guessing.
  4. Escalate immediately for serious signs. Seek urgent veterinary care for breathing difficulty, significant swelling, difficulty swallowing, severe or worsening pain, persistent eye irritation, or a marked change in behavior or responsiveness. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before asking for advice, particularly after mouth or eye contact.

Do not force water into a struggling pet’s mouth, give human medication, or induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you. A rinse that the animal cannot tolerate could cause choking or aspiration, and the right response depends on the pet, exposure route, and symptoms. Why a caterpillar can irritate or injure a pet

Not every caterpillar presents the same risk. ASPCApro distinguishes urticating hairs, which can mechanically irritate tissue, from stinging hairs, described as hollow spines associated with poison-secreting cells. The specific risk depends on the caterpillar and how the pet encountered it. Do not assume that a caterpillar is harmless because the reaction is not immediate or because you do not recognize the species.

Possible skin effects include irritation, redness, swelling, and itching. A pet’s coat can make a skin reaction less noticeable, so look for a change in behavior or visible irritation without rubbing or repeatedly handling the area. A pet may lick or rub the contact site, potentially moving hairs to sensitive tissue. Keep the animal from doing so and ask a veterinarian what to do next.

Mouth exposure is possible when a pet investigates or eats a caterpillar. Signs can include drooling, head shaking, pawing at the mouth, irritation of the lips, tongue, or mouth, vomiting, diarrhea, and difficulty swallowing. Eye exposure is also possible; hairs can be difficult to remove, and persistent eye signs may need a veterinary examination. ASPCA warns that caterpillar hairs can be harmful when touched or ingested. There is no single predictable reaction that can be assumed from the word “stinging,” so the exposure route and the animal’s signs matter.

What to do by exposure route

If your pet mouthed or swallowed the caterpillar

Call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly, even if signs seem mild or you are not sure the pet swallowed anything. The mouth is a sensitive area, and the veterinarian can advise based on what happened and what you observe. ASPCApro describes rinsing the mouth, but this is not appropriate if the pet is struggling or a rinse could lead to choking or aspiration. Do not force the mouth open or pour water in. Ask the veterinary professional whether rinsing is appropriate and how to proceed safely.

Watch for drooling, head shaking, pawing at the mouth, visible irritation of the lips or tongue, vomiting, diarrhea, or trouble swallowing. Tell the person you call about any of these signs, when they began, and whether they are changing. Difficulty swallowing, marked swelling, breathing problems, or rapidly worsening symptoms warrant urgent veterinary care rather than continued observation at home.

If hairs may be in an eye

ASPCApro advises thoroughly flushing the eyes. Eye contact deserves prompt attention because hairs can be difficult to remove. If you cannot flush the eye safely, or your pet resists, ask a veterinarian for immediate guidance rather than risking injury while trying to restrain the animal. Do not rub the eye or try to pick out hairs yourself.

Seek veterinary evaluation if redness, rubbing, tearing, or other eye signs continue after flushing or if you are uncertain whether hairs remain. Persistent irritation may need an examination. Tell the clinic which eye may be affected, what you saw happen, and whether the pet continues to rub or show discomfort.

If hairs are on the skin

Avoid rubbing the area, which can spread hairs or push them into tissue. ASPCApro says tape may be used to remove hairs present in the skin. If you use this limited measure, keep the tape and affected area away from the pet’s eyes and mouth, and do not treat tape as a remedy for an exposure inside the mouth or eye. It is not a substitute for veterinary advice.

Contact a veterinarian if irritation, itching, redness, or swelling develops, or if you are unsure whether the pet also mouthed the caterpillar. A coat may make a reaction harder to see, so report any changes you notice rather than assuming that no visible skin irritation means there was no exposure.

When veterinary care is urgent

Seek urgent veterinary care rather than monitoring at home if your pet has any of the following:

  • Breathing difficulty or significant swelling
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Severe or worsening pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms
  • Persistent eye irritation, rubbing, redness, or tearing
  • A marked change in behavior or responsiveness

Mouth or eye exposure also warrants prompt professional advice even when these severe signs are absent. The affected tissue is sensitive, and hairs in an eye can be difficult to remove. A veterinarian or poison-control professional can help determine whether the pet needs examination or treatment. Do not wait for a severe reaction before calling if you know the pet mouthed the caterpillar, swallowed it, or had possible eye exposure.

When you call, be ready to describe the exposure route and timing, your pet’s species and size, and the signs you have seen. If you do not know whether contact was limited to the skin, explain that uncertainty. Follow the professional’s directions about whether to go in, what to do during transport, and whether any immediate first aid is appropriate.

Medication and treatment

ASPCApro says, “Treatment for a pet exposed to a caterpillar is largely symptomatic and supportive,” in its article Fuzzy Green Poisoners: Caterpillar Toxicosis in Pets. In other words, treatment is guided by the animal’s signs and needs; the source does not give one universal at-home treatment for every pet or exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ASPCApro discusses pain relievers, antihistamines, and corticosteroids as possible clinical treatments. This is not a recommendation to give those medicines at home. The appropriate medication and dose depend on the animal and the exposure, and ASPCApro’s article does not provide a safe universal home medicine or dose. Do not give a human product, use a dose found online, or start a medication from a prior prescription without veterinary direction.

Likewise, do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you. The immediate priority is to stop further contact, report what happened, and get advice tailored to the route of exposure and symptoms. A veterinary professional can decide whether supportive care, medication, or an examination is needed.

Who to contact

In the United States, start with your regular veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital. The FDA lists a veterinarian, emergency animal hospital, or animal poison-control center as appropriate sources of advice for a pet emergency. If your regular clinic is unavailable or the signs are serious, contact an emergency veterinary hospital.

The ASPCA identifies its Animal Poison Control Center for suspected pet exposures. Pet Poison Helpline offers 24/7 advice by phone or chat; its retrieved page lists an $89 incident fee. Fees, contact details, hours, and availability can change, so verify current information on the official ASPCA Animal Poison Control and Pet Poison Helpline pages when you call. If you use a poison-control service, share the same practical details: your pet’s species and size, how and when contact happened, and the symptoms you have noticed.

For general prevention advice, ASPCA’s August 1, 2018 article Bad Bugs, Bad Bugs: What You Should Do to Keep Your Pets Safe discusses keeping pets safe around potentially harmful bugs. Do not handle or collect a caterpillar bare-handed to identify it; tell the clinic what you observed and follow its instructions. No prevalence estimate is available in the cited ASPCApro and ASPCA materials, and a number is not needed to decide what to do after a possible exposure.
