A move, rehoming, bereavement, new household member, travel, or a disrupted routine can coincide with a temporary loss of appetite. Stress is only one possibility, however—not a diagnosis. Illness, pain, dental disease, medication effects, and a food change can look the same at first. Keep meals and the environment predictable, record what happens, and call your veterinarian for advice if your dog continues to refuse food or develops any other symptom. Puppies, small dogs, dogs with chronic conditions, and dogs taking medicine that must be given with food warrant an earlier call.
Why a major change can affect eating
Dogs often rely on familiar smells, people, places, schedules, and feeding rituals. A move can change several of those at once; rehoming or the death of a companion can remove a familiar person or animal; construction, guests, a new baby, boarding, travel, or a changed work schedule can alter the daily pattern. Appetite may dip while a dog adjusts.

That timing makes stress plausible, but it does not prove stress caused the refusal. The same sign can be an early clue to a medical problem. The American Kennel Club and PetMD list illness, pain, dental problems, medication effects, environmental changes, and food-related factors among possible reasons a dog stops eating. A dog that appears bright and otherwise normal still deserves observation because some illnesses begin subtly.

Dr. Ann Hohenhaus of The Animal Medical Center recalled a dog entering a new household after her owner died: “She was on a bit of a hunger strike, and I think it was because her life was upside-down.” That is an anecdote illustrating how upheaval can affect an individual dog, not proof that appetite loss in your dog is caused by stress.

First, check for signs that need prompt veterinary attention
Do not wait for a routine settling-in period if appetite loss comes with signs of illness. Contact your veterinarian promptly when your dog has any of the following:
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Marked lethargy, weakness, collapse, or a major change in responsiveness
- Obvious pain, a tense or swollen abdomen, repeated retching, or reluctance to move
- Trouble breathing
- Signs of mouth pain, such as dropping food, pawing at the mouth, excessive drooling, or being unable to chew
- Rapid worsening or any other behavior that makes you think your dog is seriously unwell
Puppies and small dogs have less margin for prolonged refusal, and dogs with diabetes, kidney disease, gastrointestinal disease, or another chronic condition may deteriorate sooner. Call earlier for those dogs rather than applying a general waiting period. If your dog’s medication depends on food, ask the prescribing veterinarian what to do before skipping, changing, or stopping a dose.
What to do during the next meal
Restore familiar conditions
Use the food your dog was eating before the change, if it is available and appropriate, and serve it at the usual time. Put the food and water bowls in a consistent, quiet location. Moving the bowls to a different room can be one more environmental change, even when the move itself was weeks ago. Keep the feeding area away from heavy foot traffic, loud equipment, children who may interrupt, and other animals that might crowd the bowl.

Give your dog space to eat. Some dogs eat only when a familiar person is nearby; others will not eat while watched. You can note whether your dog approaches the bowl, sniffs, takes a bite, drops food, or eats later when the household is quiet. These observations help your veterinarian distinguish reluctance from possible difficulty chewing or swallowing, but they do not establish a cause by themselves.

Keep the rest of the routine steady
Use familiar walk times, rest areas, and sleep arrangements where possible. Limit unnecessary visitors and sudden changes while you monitor appetite. A calm routine is supportive, but it is not a substitute for an examination when refusal persists or symptoms appear.
Avoid a cycle of constant food changes
Food preference can contribute to refusal, yet repeatedly switching foods or adding new toppers can create gastrointestinal upset and make it difficult to know what your dog actually tolerates. Do not let attempts to tempt your dog with increasingly novel foods delay a veterinary call. No particular topper, bowl, puzzle, or appetite stimulant is established as a default treatment for unexplained appetite loss. Ask your veterinarian before making a therapeutic diet change.

How long can you watch a dog that refuses food?
Veterinary sources do not give one universal safe waiting period. Their advice differs, and the appropriate response depends on age, size, health, medication, duration, and accompanying signs. The time windows below are guidance for contacting a professional, not study statistics and not a guarantee that waiting is safe for every dog.
| Source | Guidance on timing | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| American Kennel Club | Contact a veterinarian if eating has not resumed within 12–24 hours. | This is general guidance; an individual dog may need advice sooner. |
| PetMD, updated August 12, 2026 | Evaluation is described for refusal lasting more than 24–48 hours. | Seek earlier evaluation when vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or trouble breathing occurs. |
| Vetstreet | Search-result guidance gives a shorter threshold for puppies and small dogs. | The exact interval is not stated in the retrieved guidance. |
| North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine | Seek professional advice when a dog stops eating for more than two days. | This advice still does not override earlier action for illness signs or higher-risk dogs. |
Because these recommendations differ, call your own veterinary practice for an individualized threshold instead of treating 12, 24, 48 hours, or two days as a universal safe limit. A dog that misses one meal after a stressful event may need close monitoring, while a puppy, a small dog, a dog with chronic disease, or a dog unable to take essential medication with food may need same-day advice.
Separate stress-related clues from medical clues
Clues that the environment may be contributing
A dog may eat when a familiar person returns, take food in a quiet room, or show interest in food while remaining otherwise comfortable. Appetite may have changed immediately after the move, loss, rehoming, or schedule disruption. Those patterns can support the possibility that the environment is affecting eating. They do not rule out illness, because many medical conditions fluctuate and dogs can compensate for a time.
Clues that make a medical cause more concerning
Refusal accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, pain, breathing difficulty, dehydration, abnormal stool, mouth pain, or rapid deterioration needs professional assessment. A dog that approaches food but cannot pick it up or chew may have oral or dental pain rather than simple stress. A dog that refuses both food and water, or cannot keep water down, should be discussed with a veterinarian promptly.

Do not assume a recent move explains a new symptom. The move and the illness can be unrelated, or the change may have delayed recognition of a problem that was already developing.
A practical decision path
- Check immediate safety. Look for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, pain, breathing trouble, collapse, severe weakness, or rapid worsening. Contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly when these signs are present.
- Identify higher-risk circumstances. Note whether your dog is a puppy, very small, chronically ill, taking medicine that requires food, or has had previous appetite-related complications. Use a lower threshold for a call.
- Recreate the familiar meal. Offer the usual food and water in the usual place and at the usual time, in a calm area. Avoid crowding or repeatedly moving the bowl.
- Observe and record. Note interest in food, chewing ability, water intake, stool, energy, and any pain behavior. Record partial eating as well as complete refusal.
- Call for individualized advice. If eating does not resume, if refusal continues into the time window your veterinarian recommends, or if you are worried at any point, contact the practice. Explain the major change and provide your log.
- Follow treatment instructions exactly. If the veterinarian recommends an examination, tests, a diet, or a medication change, follow that plan. Do not give human medicines or unprescribed appetite stimulants.
Common situations after a major change
After moving house
Set up the feeding area with familiar bowls, food, bedding, and smells as soon as practical. Keep the location stable while unpacking. Construction noise, visitors, and inaccessible outdoor areas can add stress, so give your dog a quiet retreat and predictable meal and walk times. If appetite does not improve or any illness sign appears, treat the move as context—not an explanation—and call the veterinarian.
After adoption or rehoming
A newly rehomed dog may have an unfamiliar diet, schedule, household, or feeding location. Ask the previous caretaker or shelter what food and timing were used, then change diets only with a plan. Watch for signs that the dog cannot chew, is nauseated, or is becoming weak. A new home can be stressful, but it can also be the point at which an existing health problem becomes visible.
After the loss of a person or animal companion
Keep daily cues as consistent as possible. Offer the normal meal in a quiet place and allow the dog to eat without pressure. Increased sleeping, searching, vocalizing, or seeking proximity may occur after a loss, but appetite loss still requires the same health monitoring. The anecdote from Dr. Hohenhaus shows that grief-like upheaval can accompany a hunger strike; it cannot identify the cause in another dog.

After a new household member or changed schedule
Introduce new people, pets, noise, and activity gradually. Protect an uninterrupted feeding area and preserve the times your dog previously ate. If the dog eats only when a familiar person is home, record that pattern while arranging veterinary advice rather than assuming separation-related stress is the whole answer.
What not to do
- Do not declare that the dog is “just stressed” because the refusal followed a move or loss.
- Do not promise yourself that appetite will return once the dog settles.
- Do not wait through worsening symptoms to reach a chosen hour threshold.
- Do not stop, skip, or change prescription medication without speaking to the prescribing veterinarian.
- Do not use human medication or an appetite stimulant unless a veterinarian specifically prescribes it for your dog.
- Do not keep changing foods, toppers, bowls, and feeding locations in an effort to force a meal.
What the veterinarian may need to know
Be ready to describe the last normal meal, the exact duration of refusal, water intake, stool and vomiting, energy, pain behavior, dental signs, recent changes, current medications, and any food or objects your dog might have accessed. Bring the food label or a list of ingredients if the diet changed. A clear timeline helps the veterinarian decide whether your dog needs an examination, dental assessment, diagnostic tests, dietary support, or another intervention.
The purpose of a veterinary assessment is to rule out medical causes before labeling the problem behavioral or stress-related. If the examination is reassuring, your veterinarian can then help you make the household routine calmer and decide how to reintroduce or adjust food safely.
