If the puppy seems stable and can be handled safely, call a local veterinary practice to arrange an early examination. A veterinarian can assess the puppy and make a plan based on its health, age, and any history you can provide.
First, decide whether the puppy needs emergency help
Call an emergency veterinary clinic for advice or care if you notice breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, severe diarrhea, bleeding, known trauma, or marked distress. Gasping, wheezing, noisy breathing, excessive panting, or blue, gray, or purple gums can signal respiratory distress. Ongoing vomiting or diarrhea can quickly leave a puppy weak and dehydrated. Visible bleeding or a vehicle strike or fall also needs prompt assessment; a puppy that appears to behave normally may still have an internal injury. AAHA’s emergency guidance explains these warning signs.
If the puppy is unsafe to approach or move
Fear and pain can make even a small puppy unpredictable. Keep a safe distance if it is aggressive, badly injured, or cannot be secured without risk. Do not force contact or attempt unsafe transport. Call animal control or a local rescue service for professional help; AAHA and VCA both recommend getting assistance when safe handling is not possible. AAHA’s found-pet guide and VCA’s advice on stray animals cover these precautions.
If the puppy appears stable
Call a local veterinary practice and explain that you found a puppy and do not know its medical history. Ask how soon they recommend bringing it in and whether they want you to bring any available records or a stool sample. The appropriate timing depends on the puppy’s condition; the veterinary sources support an early assessment but do not set one universal hour-by-hour deadline for every stable puppy. AAHA’s puppy-care guidance, its advice for bringing home a puppy, and its life-stage visit guide describe the purpose of that first appointment.

What to do while arranging care
- Protect people and pets. Keep the puppy in a calm, secure place if you can do so safely. Avoid close contact with resident pets until a veterinarian advises you otherwise.
- Look for identification only if safe. Check for a collar or tag without putting yourself at risk.
- Do not choose treatments yourself. Avoid giving medicines, vaccines, dewormers, or flea products unless a veterinarian recommends them for this puppy.
- Transport safely. A secure travel crate can help during a routine car trip. If the puppy is injured, distressed, or unsafe to handle, ask animal professionals for help rather than trying to crate or carry it yourself. AAHA discusses crate use for car rides and veterinary visits in its new-puppy guidance.
What the veterinarian may check
Expect a thorough examination, with findings and recommendations tailored to the puppy. AAHA describes checks that may include temperature and body condition, skin, eyes, ears, nose and mouth, heart and lungs, gastrointestinal and urinary systems, neurologic function, bones, muscles and joints, and lymph nodes. The veterinarian will review any history or paperwork you have and assess the puppy’s overall condition. AAHA’s description of puppy care outlines the exam.
Vaccinations and medical history
Bring vaccination records or other paperwork if any came with the puppy. If the history is unknown, tell the veterinarian rather than assuming the puppy is protected or trying to select doses yourself. The veterinarian can consider the puppy’s condition, likely age, and health risks in your area when recommending an appropriate vaccination plan. AAHA’s first-weeks guidance and its puppy visit guide describe individualized planning.

Parasites and preventive care
Ask whether fecal testing, deworming, or parasite prevention is appropriate. Intestinal parasites are common in puppies, and some can spread to people, so the veterinarian can advise what checks and precautions make sense. You can also discuss nutrition, microchipping, age-appropriate preventive care, and when to return. The first visit is a starting point for a plan, not a fixed list of treatments every found puppy must receive. AAHA’s puppy-care guidance covers parasites and preventive topics.
Possible follow-up visits
Puppies may need repeat visits as they grow and complete their care. AAHA says many puppies typically return every 3 to 4 weeks after the initial visit until around 4 to 5 months old; the veterinarian should set the schedule for this puppy based on age and needs. AAHA’s life-stage guide gives this general cadence.

Identification, other pets, and local found-dog procedures
If there is no visible ID, ask a veterinary hospital, shelter, or animal-control office about scanning the puppy for a microchip. Notify the appropriate local animal authority as well. Keep the puppy separate from resident pets while its health status is uncertain: strays may carry parasites or infectious disease, according to AAHA and VCA.
Reporting and legal duties depend on where you live. The UK government’s guidance describes local-authority responsibilities for stray dogs in England and Wales, including assessment and microchip scanning at the earliest safe opportunity. Those rules should not be assumed to apply elsewhere; outside England and Wales, contact your local animal-control service or shelter for the relevant process. Read the UK government guidance.
