The Whippet is a medium-sized English sighthound that combines exceptional sprinting ability with a calm, affectionate home temperament. It needs regular activity and safe opportunities to run, but many Whippets are content to spend much of the day relaxing after exercise. Secure containment, careful leash handling, early socialization, and protection from cold are essential parts of responsible ownership.

The Whippet is a medium-sized English sighthound known for explosive speed outdoors and a calm, affectionate temperament at home. Most Whippets need regular exercise and safe opportunities to run, but they are not endurance athletes that must stay active all day. After a brisk walk, play session, or controlled sprint, many are happy to settle beside their people for hours.

That combination makes the breed appealing to households in both houses and apartments. It also creates several non-negotiable responsibilities: reliable containment, careful leash management, early socialization, protection from cold and wet weather, and attention to breed-appropriate body condition.

Whippets have the unmistakable outline of a sighthound: a long, lean head; long arched neck; deep chest; tucked abdomen; narrow waist; and slim but muscular legs. Their bodies are designed for acceleration and agility rather than heavy pulling or sustained endurance.

A healthy Whippet can look surprisingly thin to someone accustomed to stockier breeds. A visible waist and abdominal tuck are normal parts of the breed’s athletic shape. That does not mean every prominent rib or sharp-looking outline is automatically healthy, however. Body condition should be assessed with a veterinarian, especially if weight changes suddenly or the dog appears weak.

Adult Whippets commonly stand about 18–22 inches at the shoulder and weigh roughly 25–40 pounds. Individual size varies, and males are generally larger than females. Excess weight is particularly unsuitable for this lean frame: carrying too much can place additional stress on joints and contribute to painful orthopedic problems. Feed for a healthy body condition rather than trying to make a Whippet look bulky.

The breed comes in a wide range of colors and markings. Color is not a reliable shortcut for predicting health, personality, or quality. Responsible breeding decisions should focus on sound structure, temperament, health screening, and function—not simply appearance.

Whippet temperament: affectionate, quiet, and capable of mischief

Well-socialized Whippets are usually strongly attached to their families. They tend to be affectionate, playful, sensitive, and calm in the home. Many are quieter than prospective owners expect and are content to spend substantial portions of the day resting after they have had appropriate activity.

“Calm indoors” should not be confused with “effortless in every situation.” Young Whippets can be agile, mischievous, excitable, and surprisingly capable of jumping or climbing. Their independence can also make training feel different from training a highly food-motivated, eager-to-please retriever. They can learn basic obedience well, but consistency, clear expectations, rewards, and short positive sessions usually work better than harsh corrections or repetitive drilling.

Early socialization matters. Puppy classes and carefully managed exposure to people, calm dogs, household sounds, surfaces, handling, and new environments can help a young Whippet become a confident adult. Because the breed can be sensitive, training should build trust while still maintaining firm, predictable boundaries.

Are Whippets good family dogs?

They can be. A well-socialized Whippet may live happily with children and other dogs, but the usual safeguards still apply. Children should be taught not to chase, corner, climb on, or disturb a resting dog, and interactions should be supervised. Introductions to resident pets should be gradual and controlled rather than assuming that a friendly Whippet will automatically be compatible with every animal.

Whippets have a history of hunting small game. Prey drive varies by individual, but a prospective owner should carefully assess compatibility with cats, rabbits, rodents, and other small pets. Even a dog that behaves gently indoors may react very differently to a small animal running outdoors.

Exercise needs: a sprinter, not a nonstop endurance dog

A Whippet needs regular physical and mental activity, but its exercise pattern is often misunderstood. The breed is built for short, intense bursts of speed. It does not necessarily need hours of continuous running every day; it does need dependable opportunities to move vigorously, explore, play, and use its senses.

Suitable activities can include:

  • Brisk daily walks with time to sniff and investigate
  • Retrieving and interactive play
  • Play with compatible dogs
  • Running in a securely fenced area
  • Lure coursing
  • Agility and other controlled dog sports
  • Short training sessions that provide mental work as well as exercise

A puppy’s exercise should be age-appropriate, with care taken not to force prolonged, repetitive activity while the skeleton is developing. An adult Whippet may be a superb running or sports companion for the right activity level, but individual fitness, age, health, and conditioning should determine the plan. A sudden change in exercise tolerance, reluctance to run, stiffness, or unexplained fatigue warrants veterinary advice.

Off-leash safety and containment

Containment is one of the most important Whippet ownership issues. The breed’s speed, sight-based hunting instincts, and interest in chasing moving objects make an unsecured off-leash environment dangerous. A Whippet should remain on a lead outside a secure fenced area; reliable recall should not be treated as a guarantee in an open space.

A fenced yard is useful, but it is not automatically Whippet-proof. Young dogs may jump, climb, squeeze through openings, or exploit a gate that appears secure. Inspect fencing, gates, latches, and gaps regularly, and supervise outdoor time—particularly during the puppy and adolescent stages.

For walks, use equipment that fits correctly and check it regularly. Whippets and Greyhounds can have heads that are narrower than their necks, allowing a loose ordinary collar to slip over the head. A properly fitted sighthound martingale collar may reduce that particular escape risk, but no collar is foolproof. A harness may be a better choice for a dog that pulls, and some owners use carefully fitted collar-and-harness combinations. Do not leave a dog unsupervised while tethered.

Grooming and routine care

Whippet grooming is relatively simple compared with the care required by long-haired or dense-coated breeds. The coat is short, smooth, and fine. Weekly light grooming with a soft brush or grooming mitt can remove loose hair and distribute skin oils; occasional bathing is generally sufficient unless the dog gets dirty.

The coat is low-maintenance, not non-shedding. Whippets do shed, and their short hairs can still be noticeable on clothing or furniture. A soft bristle brush or grooming mitt is an optional convenience rather than a specialized requirement.

Routine care should also include:

  • Checking the ears and cleaning them only as directed by a veterinarian
  • Regular nail trims, especially when natural wear is insufficient
  • Frequent tooth brushing with dog-safe products
  • Regular veterinary examinations and preventive care appropriate to the dog’s location
  • Monitoring the skin, paws, movement, appetite, and behavior for changes

Whippets are not hypoallergenic. No researched breed characteristic supports describing them that way, and people with allergies should spend time around individual dogs before making a decision.

Cold-weather care: why Whippets may need extra protection

Whippets have a lean body and very short coat, so they can become uncomfortable or cold more quickly than heavily coated dogs. Cold, wind, rain, inactivity, age, illness, and the individual dog’s tolerance all matter. There is no single temperature threshold that applies safely to every Whippet.

Watch for shivering, lifting the paws, reluctance to continue, hunched posture, seeking shelter, or unusual lethargy. Shorten the outing and warm the dog gradually if these signs appear. Wet weather can make a mild day feel much colder, especially when the dog is standing still.

For cold or wet conditions, a Whippet winter coat can provide useful protection. Choose by the dog’s actual chest and neck measurements rather than by the breed label alone. The coat should allow unrestricted shoulder movement, fit securely without binding, provide suitable coverage, and work with the dog’s leash or harness. A water-resistant design is particularly practical in rain or damp winter weather. Clothing is conditional equipment—not something every Whippet needs in every climate or all year.

Whippet health and lifespan

Whippets are generally considered a healthy, commonly long-lived breed, with a typical lifespan of about 12–15 years. As with any breed, “generally healthy” does not mean free from inherited or age-related disease, and it should not be interpreted as a prediction for an individual dog.

The American Whippet Club’s health information discusses concerns that can include:

  • Cardiac disease
  • Congenital hearing loss
  • Eye disorders
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Epilepsy
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Cancer
  • Kidney disease

Some conditions are uncommon, while others are more associated with older dogs. These are breed health considerations, not a list of problems every Whippet will develop. Regular examinations, appropriate nutrition, dental care, preventive medicine, and attention to changes in stamina or behavior give owners the best chance of identifying problems early.

Heart murmurs in Whippets

Cardiac evaluation deserves special care. Athletic Whippets may have innocent flow or athletic murmurs, but a murmur can also reflect mitral valve disease or another cardiac problem. The sound alone cannot establish the cause. If a veterinarian hears a murmur, owners should follow veterinary advice; assessment by an experienced veterinary cardiologist and echocardiography may be used to distinguish an innocent murmur from disease.

Weight and body condition

Do not respond to a breed-appropriate lean outline by automatically increasing food. A Whippet’s frame is poorly suited to excess weight, which can worsen orthopedic stress. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition and adjust diet for age, activity, reproductive status, and health rather than relying only on a food-bag feeding chart.

Questions to ask a Whippet breeder

Health testing cannot guarantee that a puppy will never become ill, but it can provide meaningful information about the parents and help breeders make more responsible decisions. For prospective buyers in the United States, the American Kennel Club lists cardiac examination, ophthalmologist evaluation, and BAER hearing testing among the recommended national parent-club health tests for Whippets. The American Whippet Club’s published health statement specifies BAER testing, an eye examination, and echocardiography by a board-certified cardiologist.

The Whippet Health Foundation page dated June 18, 2026 describes a more detailed screening pathway: yearly CAER eye testing, echocardiography by a board-certified cardiologist every two years, and one-time BAER testing are listed as required; thyroid testing every two years and a one-time myostatin deficiency test are listed as recommended. Screening recommendations can change, so buyers should verify the current guidance through the parent club and relevant registry before purchasing.

Ask to see publicly verifiable results for the actual sire and dam, not just a verbal assurance that the line is “healthy.” Useful questions include:

What a CHIC number does—and does not—mean

An OFA CHIC number means that the required breed-specific tests were completed and the results were made publicly available. It does not mean that every result was normal. Review each individual test result rather than treating the CHIC number as a blanket health guarantee.

Is a Whippet right for you?

A Whippet may be a strong match if you want a dog that is:

  • Affectionate and closely bonded to its household
  • Usually quiet and relaxed indoors after exercise
  • Capable of energetic outdoor activity without requiring nonstop endurance exercise
  • Relatively simple to groom
  • Suitable for apartment life when exercise and safety needs are met

The breed may be a poor fit if you need a dog that can reliably roam off leash in unfenced spaces, is naturally comfortable in cold weather without extra management, or consistently approaches training with the eager, highly biddable style of some working and retrieving breeds. Those are lifestyle-fit considerations, not defects. A Whippet’s independence, prey drive, speed, and weather sensitivity are central parts of planning for the breed.

A practical Whippet-owner checklist

  • Provide daily walks plus safe opportunities for vigorous bursts of activity.
  • Use a lead outside a secure fenced area; never rely solely on recall around traffic or wildlife.
  • Inspect fences, gates, collars, harnesses, and fasteners regularly.
  • Socialize and train puppies early with positive, consistent methods.
  • Supervise children and assess compatibility with cats and other small animals individually.
  • Maintain a lean, veterinarian-approved body condition.
  • Brush lightly about weekly and keep up with nails, teeth, ears, and veterinary care.
  • Prepare a well-fitting coat for cold or wet conditions when the individual dog needs one.
  • Ask breeders for verifiable parent health results and interpret CHIC information correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Whippet’s temperament like?

Whippets are usually affectionate, playful, intelligent, and calm indoors after exercise. They are often quiet, but young dogs can be mischievous and independent, so early socialization and consistent training are important.

Can Whippets live in apartments?

Yes, a Whippet can live in an apartment if it receives regular walks, safe vigorous exercise, training, and mental stimulation. Apartment living does not remove the need for secure leash management and opportunities to run safely.

Can Whippets be trusted off leash?

Whippets should stay on a lead outside a secure fenced area. Their speed and prey drive can make chasing dangerous, and young dogs may jump or climb over inadequate fencing. Recall should not be treated as guaranteed in an unsecured space.

Are Whippets hypoallergenic?

Whippets are not hypoallergenic. Their short coat is easy to maintain, but they do shed and can still trigger allergies.

Do Whippets need winter coats?

Many Whippets benefit from a properly fitted coat or sweater in cold or wet conditions, but there is no universal temperature rule. Consider the individual dog, wind, rain, activity, age, and health, and choose by accurate measurements rather than breed label alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does a CHIC number mean for a Whippet?

A CHIC number shows that required breed-specific tests were completed and made publicly available. It does not mean every result was normal, so buyers should review the individual sire and dam test results.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Whippets are fast, affectionate sprinters that often become peaceful house companions. They are best suited to owners who can provide regular activity, secure containment, thoughtful training, and protection from cold—while respecting that a lean body, independent streak, and chasing instinct are normal parts of the breed.
