There is no universally official list of five “pit bull breeds.” In everyday speech, pit bull is a broad type label that may refer to a recognized breed, a related bully breed, or a mixed-breed dog. The most useful five-breed comparison is the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully, and—under a broader definition—the American Bulldog.
What does “pit bull” mean?
“Pit bull” is usually a broad type label, not the name of one universally defined breed. Depending on who is using it, the term may refer to the American Pit Bull Terrier, a related recognized breed, a bully breed, or a mixed-breed dog with similar features.

That is why there is no official list of exactly five pit bull breeds shared by every kennel club, shelter, DNA company, or legal jurisdiction. The five entries below are a practical educational grouping. The first three are the breeds most directly associated with the label; the American Bully is a separately standardized modern bully breed, and the American Bulldog is an adjacent breed that is included more broadly rather than universally.

1. American Pit Bull Terrier
The American Pit Bull Terrier, often abbreviated as APBT, is a specific breed—not a catch-all name for every dog described as a pit bull.

The breed is formally standardized in United Kennel Club materials and is also represented in American Dog Breeders Association breed-standard material. Those standards describe a muscular, active, agile dog with established breed type and functional soundness. The emphasis is not simply on a large head or heavily muscled body, but on the overall structure, proportions, movement, and working soundness associated with the breed.
In everyday conversation, however, “pit bull” is often used much more broadly. An APBT may be labeled a pit bull, but a dog labeled a pit bull is not necessarily an APBT. It could be an American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, another related breed, or a mixed-breed dog.
2. American Staffordshire Terrier
The American Staffordshire Terrier, commonly called the AmStaff, is a distinct breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. It is a stocky, muscular bull-type terrier with a broad head and defined jaws.
The AKC breed description presents the AmStaff as intelligent, confident, and generally good-natured when responsibly bred, raised, trained, and managed. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1936. Historical naming helped distinguish the American Staffordshire Terrier from the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, although the two breeds share historical roots and are still frequently confused.
The AmStaff has a more formalized modern identity under the AKC than the casual label “pit bull.” That does not mean every dog with an AmStaff-like appearance is an AmStaff, however. A registry pedigree or other reliable ancestry information is needed to make that identification with confidence.
3. Staffordshire Bull Terrier
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, sometimes called a Staffy or Staffie, is a separate British breed recognized by the AKC. Despite its similar name, it is not the same breed as the American Staffordshire Terrier.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are generally smaller and more compact than American Staffordshire Terriers. The AKC lists a typical height of 14 to 16 inches, with approximate weight ranges of 24 to 38 pounds depending on sex. The breed is muscular, energetic, and affectionate with its family.

Responsible socialization and supervision are important parts of ownership. Interactions with children and other dogs should be actively supervised, as they should with any strong, energetic dog. A breed label cannot guarantee that an individual dog will behave in a particular way.

4. American Bully
The American Bully is a separately standardized modern bully breed. It is often included in pit bull-type discussions because of its historical relationship to the American Pit Bull Terrier and its overlapping appearance.
The United Kennel Club standard identifies influence from the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, English Bulldog, and Olde English Bulldogge. That mixed historical background helps explain both the American Bully’s appearance and its frequent inclusion in broad discussions of bully breeds.
It is still not the same breed as the APBT. A very broad head, short coat, muscular body, or low-slung build does not by itself prove that a dog is an American Bully. The breed name refers to documented ancestry and a breed standard, not merely to body shape.

The American Bulldog is best understood as an adjacent bully breed rather than an interchangeable synonym for “pit bull.” Some broad consumer lists include it because it shares a bulldog background and several physical characteristics with pit bull-type dogs. Other breed experts use a narrower definition and keep it separate.
The AKC describes the American Bulldog as a distinct, athletic working breed descended from English Bulldog stock. Historically, American Bulldogs were used for farm utility, stock work, catching livestock or feral pigs, property protection, and companionship.
They are generally more substantial and differently built than the smaller Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and their working-breed background is part of their identity. Calling an American Bulldog a “pit bull” may be understandable in casual conversation, but it is not a precise breed identification.
How these five breeds are related
These dogs overlap in history and appearance. Several have bull-and-terrier or bulldog ancestry, short coats, muscular bodies, broad heads, and considerable athletic ability. Those similarities are the reason people often group them together.
But resemblance does not make the breeds interchangeable. A registry standard defines a particular breed, while “pit bull” is often an informal category. The same dog may receive different labels depending on whether the label comes from:

- a kennel club or breed registry;
- a shelter or animal-control agency;
- a veterinarian or dog professional;
- a DNA-testing company;
- a landlord, insurer, or local authority; or
- ordinary conversation based on appearance.
Those systems do not necessarily use the same definition. This matters especially when a label affects adoption records, housing, insurance, licensing, or local legal requirements. If a dog’s breed classification has legal or contractual consequences, check the exact rules in the relevant location rather than relying on a general internet list.
Can you identify a pit bull breed by appearance?
Usually, you can make a visual description—but not a reliable exact breed identification.
Head shape, ear position, coat color, size, muscularity, and body proportions can provide clues. They cannot prove that a dog is an American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully, American Bulldog, or any particular combination of breeds.

This is especially true for mixed-breed dogs. Research comparing visual shelter identifications with DNA-based breed signatures found that shelter staff varied in their identification of pit bull-type dogs, and agreement between visual labels and genetic results was inconsistent. Other genetics research has also found that appearance-based descriptions often fail to capture a mixed-breed dog’s full ancestry.
In practical terms, a photo can support a conversation about what a dog resembles. It cannot establish pedigree. Even experienced people may disagree, particularly when a dog has ancestry from several breeds.
How to find out what a pit bull mix really is
- Look for documented records. A reputable breeder’s paperwork, registry documentation, or known parentage is more useful than a visual guess when it is available.
- Ask how the label was assigned. A shelter’s “pit bull mix” description may simply mean that the dog has a general bully-type appearance. Ask whether the dog’s parents or pedigree are known.
- Use DNA testing as additional evidence. A consumer test can investigate ancestry, but it is not the same as a registry pedigree or legal certification.
- Interpret the result cautiously. Breed percentages and genetic matches describe ancestry; they do not predict a dog’s personality, guarantee behavior, or replace a veterinarian’s advice.
A dog DNA test kit can be useful for owners who want to investigate the ancestry of a shelter dog or suspected pit bull mix. Embark, for example, lists the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bully, and American Staffordshire Terrier among breeds in its tested panel and offers a Breed ID test. Availability and product coverage can change, so check the current test details before purchasing. Treat the result as ancestry information—not as a behavioral diagnosis, legal determination, or substitute for pedigree records.

There is no responsible one-word answer that applies to every dog in these five groups. A dog’s behavior is influenced by its individual temperament, breeding, early socialization, training, environment, handling, health, and circumstances.
Breed descriptions do provide useful ownership information. These are generally strong, active dogs that may benefit from regular physical exercise, training, problem-solving activities, and appropriate mental enrichment. The AKC’s AmStaff guidance emphasizes trainability and the need for both mental and physical challenges. Staffordshire Bull Terrier guidance likewise highlights responsible socialization and supervision around children and other dogs.

Responsible ownership includes:
- using reward-based training and starting early;
- socializing the dog gradually and safely rather than forcing interactions;
- supervising children and dogs together;
- learning to recognize stress, fear, overexcitement, and escalating arousal;
- providing secure handling, appropriate exercise, and enrichment;
- checking housing, licensing, and local regulations before adoption; and
- evaluating the individual dog rather than assuming that a label guarantees safety or danger.
These precautions are not evidence that every dog in the group is aggressive, nor is any breed name a guarantee that a dog is automatically safe, child-friendly, or suitable for every household. They are basic safeguards for living with any powerful, energetic dog.
Quick comparison of the five types
| Type or breed | How it relates to “pit bull” | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| American Pit Bull Terrier | One of the breeds most directly associated with the label | A specific standardized breed, not every dog called a pit bull |
| American Staffordshire Terrier | Often grouped with pit bull-type dogs because of shared history and appearance | A distinct AKC-recognized American breed |
| Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Often included because of its name and historical relationship | A separate, generally smaller British breed |
| American Bully | Frequently included in modern bully-breed discussions | A separately standardized breed with mixed bully-breed influences |
| American Bulldog | Included in broader lists, but not in every narrow definition | An adjacent athletic working breed descended from English Bulldog stock |
Bottom line
There is no single official list of five “pit bull breeds.” The most useful distinction is between the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully, and American Bulldog as separate breeds or related bully types.
“Pit bull” may describe one of those breeds, another related dog, or a mix. Appearance is only a clue, not proof of ancestry. When the exact identity matters, use documented records and DNA results cautiously—and make ownership decisions based on the individual dog’s behavior, needs, training, and circumstances.

Is a pit bull the same as an American Pit Bull Terrier?
No. The American Pit Bull Terrier is one specific breed, while “pit bull” is commonly used as a broad label for several related breeds and mixed-breed dogs. An APBT may be called a pit bull, but not every dog called a pit bull is an APBT.
What is the difference between a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and an American Staffordshire Terrier?
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is generally smaller and more compact, and it is a distinct British breed. The American Staffordshire Terrier is a separate American breed recognized by the AKC. They share historical roots but should not be treated as the same breed.
Can you tell which pit bull breed a dog is by looking at it?
Not reliably. A photograph can show what a dog resembles, but head shape, size, coat, and muscularity cannot prove exact breed ancestry. Records and DNA testing may provide additional information, especially for mixed-breed dogs.
Are dog DNA tests accurate for pit bull mixes?
A dog DNA test can help investigate ancestry, but it is not a legal certification, guaranteed behavior prediction, or replacement for pedigree records or veterinary advice. Test coverage and interpretation also vary by company.

The Bottom Line
“Pit bull” is a broad informal label, not one universally recognized breed. The five commonly discussed types are the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully, and American Bulldog—but the last two, especially the American Bulldog, may be excluded by narrower definitions. Visual identification is unreliable, particularly for mixed-breed dogs, so use records or DNA testing as additional evidence and focus responsible ownership decisions on the individual dog.
