If you find an injured seagull in the UK, call the animal-welfare service for your nation: the RSPCA in England and Wales, the SSPCA in Scotland, or the USPCA in Northern Ireland. Keep your distance and ask the service what to do before trying to handle or move the bird. These numbers are UK-specific; elsewhere, contact a local wildlife rehabilitator, animal-welfare authority, animal control service, or veterinarian.
Who to call in the UK
For one injured, living gull, use the contact for the country where you found it. UK government guidance lists these national routes; check the linked page for current service hours and contact details.

These are not international numbers. Outside the UK, look for a local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation centre, animal-welfare authority, animal control service, or veterinarian; the appropriate service depends on your location.
What to do while you seek help
- Stay back. Observe from a safe distance. The UK Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code advises: “If you see an animal that is injured, distressed, stranded or entangled, do not approach it, touch it or attempt to return it to the sea.”
- Note the details. Be ready to give the service the precise location and describe what seems wrong. If the bird is near traffic or poses an immediate hazard to people, explain that when you call.
- Follow the service’s instructions. Do not attempt to catch, carry or transport the gull based on generic advice. Ask the relevant animal-welfare service, wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian what is safe and appropriate.
If the gull is a chick on the ground
A chick on the ground is not necessarily injured or abandoned. The RSPCA says parents continue to care for a healthy grounded gull chick, so leave it alone unless it is sick or injured. If it appears unwell or is deteriorating, contact a local wildlife rehabilitation centre or vet for advice. See the RSPCA’s guidance on found gull chicks.

If the bird is dead, or you find several
Do not touch a dead wild bird. Follow current local official guidance for reporting it. In the UK, the Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code identifies three or more dead birds, including at least one gull, as a reportable threshold, alongside other specified categories. Check the code’s current instructions rather than assuming the same reporting route applies everywhere.
Local rules and services can differ
Rescue and collection arrangements vary by area; the national contacts above do not guarantee that a local service will collect a bird. In Scotland, Fife Council says gulls, their nests and eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004, and directs people with an injured gull to the SSPCA.
