“Seagull” is an everyday name for several gull species, and the practical advice below reflects UK guidance. If you are elsewhere, contact your local wildlife authority or rehabilitator for location-specific instructions.

Start with the bird’s condition, not its location
A gull on the ground is not automatically in trouble. Young gulls can leave the nest before they can fly well, then shelter nearby while their parents continue to feed them. An adult gull on the ground also may simply be resting. What matters is whether the bird appears alert and able to move normally for its age, and whether there are signs of injury or illness.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFrom a safe distance, look for these signs:
- Likely leave it alone: upright posture, alertness, normal movement for its age, and no visible injury.
- Call for professional advice: blood or an obvious wound; inability to keep balance; a twisted-looking head or neck; unexplained swellings or crusty growths; marked lethargy; or movement that seems unusually limited.
- Call even if you cannot see a wound: a cat or dog has caught the bird. Feathers can conceal injuries, so apparent lack of damage is not enough to rule out a problem.
Wild birds can hide pain when people are close, so a bird that looks calm is not necessarily uninjured. The RSPCA’s sick or injured bird guidance advises judging from a distance rather than approaching to test whether the bird will fly.

If the gull is an alert chick, keep your distance
Parents may not remain beside a chick continuously. Their absence from view is not proof that the chick has been abandoned. If it is alert, appears well, and is in a safe place, leave it where it is; keep children, crowds, and pets away, and observe from a distance. The RSPCA says uninjured baby gulls should remain in parental care and should not be fed. Its baby gull guidance also warns that moving a gull that does not need help may be illegal in the UK.
When a very young chick is in immediate danger
If a small, fluffy down-covered chick that runs rather than flies is in immediate danger, the RSPCA says it may be possible to move it a short distance to a nearby safe high spot, such as a fence, wall, or adjacent roof. Do this only if it is safe and feasible. Do not climb, attempt to return it to a nest, or carry an adult or flighted gull. Afterward, move away and monitor from a distance to see whether its parents continue attending it.

When to call a vet or wildlife rehabilitator
Contact a local wildlife rehabilitator or vet if the gull has a visible wound or is bleeding, cannot maintain balance, has an abnormal head or neck posture, shows unexplained swellings or crusts, is markedly lethargic, or is getting worse. A cat or dog capture is also a reason to call, even when no injury can be seen.
If the signs are unclear, take a photo or short video from a safe distance, if you can do so without disturbing the bird, and share it when you call. Give the professional the precise location and describe what you observed, including whether a pet caught the gull. Do not approach just to see if it can fly.

The RSPCA’s baby gull advice mentions a 24-hour observation period in the specific situation of a chick whose condition has worsened. That is not a general reason to wait when there is an obvious injury, illness, immediate danger, or a cat or dog capture; call for advice in those cases.
Do not handle or transport the gull yourself
A frightened or injured bird may react defensively. The RSPCA’s UK guidance on helping injured wild animals classifies adult and fledgling gulls among large wild birds that members of the public should not handle or transport. Do not attempt home treatment, and do not put yourself at risk near traffic, a cliff edge, or another hazard. Keep dogs on leads and other pets away.

- SOFT & COMFORTABLE: Premium grain goatskin provides lasting softness and excellent dexterity for extended climbing and rope rescue operations, keeping hands naturally agile during prolonged use.
- DURABLE & HEAT RESISTANT: The reinforced padded palm withstands friction heat during long rappels and rope descents, while the goatskin offers superior abrasion resistance for high-intensity rescue and multi-pitch climbing.
- BREATHABLE & SWEAT-CONTROLLING: Stretchable spandex panels promote airflow during climbing and rescue tasks, wicking away moisture to prevent slippage and maintain secure rope grip.
- FLEXIBLE & SECURE FIT: Anatomically curved fingers and an adjustable Velcro cuff enable full finger mobility and precise tool control during technical climbing and rescue operations without restricting movement.
- QUICK-ACCESS & GEAR-READY: The built-in carabiner hole allows secure attachment to harnesses or gear loops for instant access during multi-pitch climbs or emergency response.
UK RSPCA bird guidance also advises not touching a sick bird at first because of avian influenza concerns. Disease precautions and wildlife rules vary by place and can change, so check current local public-health and wildlife-authority guidance before any handling. If the bird is in an unsafe location or disease is suspected, ask a local professional what to do rather than moving it.
