Why Cats Eat Plastic: 5 Possible Causes and What to Do

Plastic chewing can have medical or behavioral causes, while swallowing it can cause an obstruction. Learn what to watch for and how to respond.

Cats may lick, chew, or try to eat plastic for medical or behavioral reasons—but chewing is not the same as swallowing. Persistent ingestion of non-food items is called pica, and a swallowed piece of plastic or packaging can cause a dangerous intestinal blockage. If your cat has swallowed plastic, contact a veterinarian promptly.

Why does my cat chew plastic—or try to eat it?

Veterinary sources describe several possible contributors to pica and other abnormal eating behaviors. They are possibilities, not diagnoses or a ranking of what is most likely. The available guidance does not establish that every cause applies specifically to plastic. A cat may also chew or suck on an object without swallowing it.

1. A medical condition or dietary insufficiency

Conditions such as gastrointestinal disease, anemia, malnutrition or dietary insufficiency, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and some brain conditions are among the possible causes veterinarians may consider. Plastic chewing alone does not prove that a cat has a deficiency; do not add supplements or change the diet without veterinary advice. VCA’s overview of pica in cats and UC Davis’s guidance on abnormal eating habits discuss medical causes and the need to rule them out.

2. Anxiety or stress

Anxiety may contribute to abnormal eating. Separation anxiety or a household change, such as the arrival of another animal, can be relevant context, but neither proves the cause in an individual cat. Note when the behavior happens and mention any recent changes to your veterinarian. UC Davis discusses anxiety and household context; VCA also lists anxiety as a possible factor.

3. Boredom or too little enrichment

Cats with limited exercise, mental stimulation, interactive play, or social interaction may seek activities on their own. Offer safe opportunities to play, explore, climb, and forage. These changes can improve a cat’s environment, but they are not a guaranteed treatment for pica. UC Davis’s guidance on abnormal eating and VCA’s advice on chewing and sucking cover enrichment and appropriate outlets.

4. Compulsive behavior

Compulsive behavior is another possible contributor. If your cat repeatedly seeks out and swallows non-food items, or the behavior is difficult to interrupt, arrange a veterinary assessment. If medical causes have been ruled out, a veterinarian may recommend referral to a veterinary behaviorist. VCA explains possible behavioral causes and referral.

5. Early-weaning-related nonnutritive sucking

Early-weaned cats may develop nonnutritive sucking on littermates or inanimate objects. This is a possible association, not a way to identify why a particular cat chews plastic. UC Davis describes this behavior in its overview of abnormal eating habits.

Is it dangerous if my cat ate plastic?

It can be. The key concern is that swallowed plastic or packaging may act as an indigestible foreign body and obstruct the digestive tract. The risk depends on the object and the animal. An obstruction can be life-threatening and may require surgery. VCA’s foreign-body guidance for cats describes the risks and signs; ASPCA’s household-products guidance also notes the obstruction risk from packaging.

Possible signs of an obstruction include vomiting, abdominal tenderness or pain, reduced appetite, straining or passing only small amounts of stool, and lethargy. If you know or suspect your cat swallowed plastic, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting for symptoms or trying to induce vomiting at home. If a separate toxic exposure may also have occurred, contact a veterinarian or poison control immediately; the concern with plastic itself is not necessarily chemical poisoning. ASPCA advises immediate contact for suspected toxic exposures.

How can a veterinarian find the cause?

A veterinarian can ask about your cat’s diet and the behavior, examine your cat, and consider blood, urine, or fecal tests to investigate possible causes. If an obstruction is suspected, imaging may be considered. The findings help the veterinarian decide whether medical treatment, behavior support, or both are appropriate. One brief chew is not enough to diagnose pica or a nutrition problem. VCA describes the evaluation process for pica.

How do I stop my cat from eating plastic?

  • Remove access: Put bags, wrappers, and other plastic targets away. Supervise your cat when needed.
  • Offer safe activities: Provide appropriate play, exploration, climbing or hiding spaces, and enrichment. VCA suggests feeding toys instead of bowls to encourage hunting behavior and food-dispensing toys for foraging; these are optional enrichment tools, not treatment or a safety guarantee. See VCA’s advice on chewing and sucking and VCA’s pica guidance.
  • Ask about repeated behavior: Tell your veterinarian what your cat chews, whether anything is swallowed, how often it happens, and what is going on around the behavior. This can help guide assessment.
  • Avoid punishment: Punishment can increase anxiety and may worsen the behavior, according to VCA’s guidance on chewing and sucking.
