Several cat breeds are recognized for blue eyes, but the color is not a requirement in every breed—and a blue-eyed cat is not necessarily a purebred. Breed standards distinguish vivid blue from blue-gray and aqua, and some allow more than one eye color. Here are 12 breeds associated with blue eyes, with the strength of that association made clear.
How to read the breed list
“Required” means the cited standard calls for blue eyes in the relevant breed or color pattern. “Allowed” means blue is one accepted possibility, not the only one. “Associated” is more cautious: a source links the breed with blue eyes but does not establish a current standard requiring them. Standards can change, so consult the registry linked for each breed if you need current show or registration rules.

Blue eyes do not demonstrate that a cat has a particular personality, pedigree, or level of affection. Many pointed cats have blue eyes, but coat and eye color alone cannot prove ancestry. TICA explains that domestic cats can have pointed coloration, too: TICA’s guide to cat coat colors.

1. Siamese
Eye-color status: Blue is a defining standard trait. CFA describes the Siamese eye color as deep, vivid blue. The breed is shorthaired and colorpoint, with darker points contrasting with a lighter body. See the CFA Siamese profile.

2. Ragdoll
Eye-color status: Blue is specified for the pointed Ragdoll. The breed has a semi-long coat and pointed coloring. CFA’s Ragdoll profile describes its standard and appearance.
3. Birman
Eye-color status: Blue is specified in the standard. CFA says, “The blue, almost round eyes are set well apart, giving a sweet expression to the face.” Birmans are pointed, semi-longhaired cats; their white-gloved paws are another characteristic feature. See the CFA Birman standard.

5. Balinese
Eye-color status: CFA specifies deep, vivid blue eyes. Balinese cats have a pointed pattern and a longer, silky coat than Siamese cats. The CFA Balinese profile covers the breed.
6. Thai
Eye-color status: TICA’s breed profile describes the Thai as a pointed cat with blue eyes. Thai cats have a more moderate body type than the modern Siamese show type. See the TICA Thai profile.

8. Snowshoe
Eye-color status: The standard permits a range, from sparkling blue to pale blue-gray, rather than one exact shade. Snowshoes are pointed cats with characteristic white markings. See the TICA Snowshoe profile.

9. Turkish Angora
Eye-color status: Blue is allowed, but it is not the only accepted eye color. Turkish Angoras may also have other eye colors or odd eyes—one eye of each color. The breed is not defined by pointed coloring. See the CFA Turkish Angora profile.
10. Khao Manee
Eye-color status: Blue is possible, but same-colored eyes and odd eyes are also permitted. The TICA standard notes that blue may have been the original eye color; that historical qualification is not a rule that every Khao Manee has blue eyes. 11. Tonkinese
Eye-color status: Eye color depends in part on coat pattern. Tonkinese with the mink pattern are associated with aqua eyes, a color between Siamese blue and Burmese gold—not simply another name for blue. CFA explains the distinction in its Tonkinese article.
12. Ojos Azules
Eye-color status: Blue eyes are associated with this breed in a 2013 population-genetics paper, but that paper is not a current breed standard. It supports including Ojos Azules as an association, not claiming that a registry currently requires blue eyes. See the 2013 study.

Blue, blue-gray, and aqua are not interchangeable
Eye-color words matter when comparing breed descriptions. CFA calls for deep, vivid blue in Siamese, Balinese, and Colorpoint Shorthair. Snowshoe descriptions allow blue through pale blue-gray. Tonkinese mink is associated with aqua. These distinctions reflect how the standards and breed descriptions characterize the eyes; they do not establish a universal color scale.

TICA’s genetics explainer discusses how variants in TYR relate to colorpoint, sepia, and mink phenotypes: TICA’s overview of coat-color genetics. The relationship between coat pattern and eye color helps explain why blue is common in many pointed breeds, but it does not make every blue-eyed cat a member of one breed.
Can blue eyes tell you a cat’s breed?
No. Blue eyes may fit a breed description, but appearance by itself cannot establish pedigree. Pointed coloration can occur in domestic cats as well as pedigreed breeds, and some breeds permit several eye colors. For a pedigree claim, look to reliable registration or lineage records, not eye color alone. CFA and TICA publish breed standards and profiles; their standards portal explains where to find TICA standards.
Are blue eyes rare in these breeds?
The cited sources do not provide a prevalence figure for blue eyes across these breeds. That means there is no supported percentage or ranking here; it would be misleading to label the color “rare” or quantify how often it occurs based on these references.
