Cats benefit from safe elevated places because height adds usable space, offers a view of their surroundings, and can provide a place to rest or retreat. A cat tree is one option, not a requirement: shelves or suitable existing furniture may work, too. Climbing is only one part of a cat’s environment, and individual preferences differ.
What cats get from climbing
The AAFP and ISFM’s Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines identify elevated areas as an environmental resource: access to height increases a cat’s vertical space and lets it monitor its surroundings. That vantage point may be useful, but it does not mean every cat climbs for the same reason or enjoys the same heights.

The Feline Veterinary Medical Association explains that outdoor cats commonly climb trees to survey an area or hide from something they fear. Its indoor-environment guidance describes vertical space and hiding options as important, while noting that preferences can vary with life stage. A raised resting place can therefore serve both as a lookout and, depending on its design, as a retreat.
Ways to add elevated space at home
Cat trees and platforms
A freestanding cat tree or platform can combine a perch with a place to rest. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service cat-care guidance lists platforms and cat trees as enrichment options, noting that cats can feel safer when they view their surroundings from a height.

Shelves and suitable furniture
Wall shelves or secure, accessible furniture can provide vertical space without requiring a standalone tree. Choose surfaces and routes that fit the room and the cat; a perch that is difficult to reach or unstable is not a useful option.
A climbing and scratching post
Climbing and scratching can overlap. Cornell’s Feline Behavior Problems: Destructive Behavior advises matching a scratching post’s material and orientation to the cat’s observed preferences. For a cat that stretches up while scratching, a post tall enough to allow a long stretch may suit; the post should be stable enough not to topple.

Choose a setup that fits your cat and home
- Space: A freestanding structure uses floor area; shelves or suitable furniture use vertical or existing space.
- Preference and life stage: Consider whether your cat actually uses elevated resting places, prefers a more enclosed retreat, or needs an easier route to reach a perch.
- Stability and access: Make sure the structure and route are appropriate for your cat’s mobility and the way the space is arranged. The guidance does not establish a universal minimum height or one best design for every home.
- More than one cat: Consider whether the layout lets cats keep distance rather than forcing them to share one coveted perch. UK government standards for cats in scientific establishments recommend enough raised structures to minimize competition and arranging them so cats can use three-dimensional space. That is institutional guidance, not a household quota.
Climbing is one environmental need, not the whole picture
The AAFP/ISFM guidelines address a broader set of environmental needs, so a climbing structure by itself does not ensure good welfare. Treat height as one useful resource among others, and let your cat’s use of the space guide adjustments. If your cat’s willingness or ability to climb changes, these environmental recommendations do not identify a cause; consult a veterinarian for advice about that change.
