Before giving a flea or tick product, confirm it is labeled for your pet’s species, age, and weight, then follow its current directions exactly. Ask your veterinarian before treating a pet who is ill, frail, pregnant or nursing, takes other medicines, or has reacted to these products before. These are general U.S. safety steps—not a substitute for advice tailored to your pet.
Check the label before choosing or dosing a product
Flea and tick treatments include oral medicines, injections, collars, sprays, dips, shampoos, powders, and topical spot-ons. The correct product and directions depend on the individual animal and the current label. Read the label, package insert, and accompanying information every time you use a product.

- Species: Use only a product labeled for the animal you are treating. The FDA warns not to use a dog product on a cat. FDA safe-use guidance.
- Age and weight: Check the exact minimum age or life stage and weight range on the product label. Do not use a treatment on a puppy or kitten unless its label specifically permits it. For an animal too young for a labeled medication, the FDA recommends a flea comb to remove fleas and eggs, and a tick remover for ticks; ask a veterinarian about age-appropriate care.
- Health and other medicines: Consult your veterinarian first if your pet is weak, older, sick, pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or has previously shown sensitivity to flea or tick products. Mention every other product the animal is using.
- Use and frequency: Follow the directions exactly. Never apply a product more often than directed, and do not put a home or yard flea-and-tick product directly on your pet.
The FDA’s safe-use guidance covers these precautions. A familiar brand or a product that worked for another animal is not a substitute for checking the label for the pet in front of you.
Understand the isoxazoline warning
Isoxazoline products are considered safe and effective by the FDA for dogs and cats, but this drug class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions in some animals. Reported signs include muscle tremors, poor coordination (ataxia), and seizures. A seizure can occur even in an animal with no prior seizure history. The warning identifies a possible risk; it does not mean every pet given an isoxazoline will have a reaction.

Apply topical products with household safety in mind
For a spray or spot-on treatment, apply it to one pet at a time. Keep treated animals apart until the product has dried so another pet cannot lick or groom it; this matters especially in homes with both dogs and cats. Wash your hands after application, and store the product where children and pets cannot reach it. Follow any additional handling directions on the label.

Identify what regulates the product
In the United States, flea and tick products may be regulated as animal drugs or as pesticides. In general, FDA regulates oral and injectable products, while EPA regulates topical products, with exceptions. Check the label for the regulator’s identifier: FDA-approved animal drugs carry a NADA or ANADA number, while EPA-registered products carry an EPA Registration Number. The FDA explains these identifiers in its product identification guidance.

Watch your pet after treatment and know what to do
Monitor your pet after using a product, especially the first time. The FDA lists dizziness, wobbliness, poor coordination, poor appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivation, and seizures among signs to watch for. If a collar causes a reaction, remove it immediately. If another flea or tick product appears to cause a reaction, call your veterinarian right away. Depending on the product and circumstances, the veterinarian may recommend bathing with mild dish soap and rinsing thoroughly with plenty of water; do not treat bathing as a universal remedy.
- For urgent symptoms: Contact a local veterinarian or emergency clinic for immediate care. The FDA also lists the National Animal Poison Control Center as a resource.
- Keep the packaging: Have the product name and identifier available when speaking with a veterinarian or reporting a suspected reaction.
- Report suspected events through the appropriate channel: For an FDA-approved animal drug, contact the manufacturer or FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. For an EPA-regulated product, contact the manufacturer, EPA, or the National Pesticide Information Center. The FDA’s adverse-event reporting guidance describes these routes.
Compare options by the details that affect your pet
There is no single option that can be selected safely from a brand name alone. Compare the exact product labels and discuss your pet’s circumstances with a veterinarian. Useful decision points include:

The FDA materials do not establish a comprehensive head-to-head ranking of flea and tick products for safety or effectiveness. A ranking that ignores product-specific labels and an animal’s medical history would not answer whether a treatment is appropriate for your pet.

On July 10, 2025, the FDA announced approval of Bravecto Quantum (fluralaner extended-release injectable suspension) for dogs and puppies six months and older. The FDA described it as the first FDA-approved flea and tick drug offering 8 to 12 months of protection. A licensed veterinarian determines the interval based on likely tick exposure and administers the injection. This duration and age approval apply to that specific product; check its current label and availability with a veterinarian. Bravecto Quantum is an isoxazoline, so the FDA class warning also applies.
