Why Your Cat Is Pulling Out Fur—and What to Do Next

Hair loss from licking or pulling is a sign, not a diagnosis. Learn the possible causes, what a veterinary workup may involve, and why treatment depends on the cause.

If your cat is pulling out fur, licking or chewing the same areas, or developing bald patches, arrange a veterinary assessment—especially if the skin is itchy, red, sore, or broken. Hair loss is a symptom, not a diagnosis: fleas and other skin problems, allergies, infection, pain, and less commonly stress-related behavior can look similar. Treatment depends on finding the cause.

When grooming becomes a problem

Cats groom regularly, so a change can be easy to miss until fur thins or skin lesions appear. Grooming that causes hair loss, repeated hair pulling, or skin damage is not simply normal cleaning. The behavior may be a response to itch or discomfort, and baldness can also result from a problem with hair growth rather than grooming.

What can make a cat pull out fur?

Several conditions can cause similar-looking hair loss. The pattern may help guide an examination, but it cannot identify the cause by itself.

Fleas and flea allergy

Fleas can make a cat itchy, and sensitivity to flea bites can trigger intense grooming and hair loss. Fleas may not be obvious to an owner; not finding them does not rule out flea allergy. Merck Veterinary Manual identifies flea allergy dermatitis as a major cause of feline self-induced hair loss (Merck Veterinary Manual, “Hair Loss (Alopecia) in Cats,” updated May 2025; “Flea Allergy Dermatitis in Dogs and Cats”).

A fine-toothed flea comb can help inspect the coat, but it does not diagnose the cause, treat an allergy, or replace a veterinary examination.

Other parasites, infections, and allergies

Mites and other external parasites, bacterial or fungal skin disease, and secondary infections can cause itching, inflammation, or hair loss. Environmental or food-associated allergic skin disease can also lead to itch and self-induced hair loss. Feline atopic skin syndrome is assessed using compatible signs and by excluding other causes; a bald pattern alone does not establish it (Merck Veterinary Manual; “Feline Atopic Skin Syndrome,” updated May 2026).

Pain or conditions affecting hair growth

Some cats repeatedly groom a painful area. Other medical problems can cause hair loss by affecting follicles or hair growth rather than by prompting the cat to pull fur out. Tell the veterinarian where the loss is and whether your cat reacts when that area is touched.

Stress or compulsive grooming

Conflict, frustration, or anxiety may contribute to repetitive grooming, but appearance alone cannot show that stress is the cause. Veterinary behavior guidance recommends evaluating medical explanations first. If a medical cause is not evident or has been addressed and the behavior persists, discuss stress reduction and behavior care with your veterinarian (VCA Animal Hospitals, “Cat Behavior Problems: Compulsive Disorders in Cats”; Cornell Feline Health Center, “Cats that Lick Too Much”).

How a veterinarian looks for the cause

The visit typically begins with your cat’s history and a physical examination. Be ready to describe when the hair loss began, where it is, whether you see licking, chewing or scratching, your cat’s parasite-prevention history, household changes, and any other health signs.

  • Flea combing to look for evidence of fleas.
  • Skin scrapings or skin and hair samples to investigate parasites or other skin conditions.
  • Smears or cultures when infection is suspected.
  • A skin biopsy if additional assessment is needed.
  • Blood or urine tests when the examination or history indicates them.

Not every cat needs every test; the clinician selects a workup for the individual case. Merck describes examination and cause-directed testing as part of assessing feline hair loss (Merck Veterinary Manual, updated May 2025).

Treatment follows the diagnosis

A veterinarian may treat the identified cause—such as parasites, infection, or allergic skin disease—and help manage itch or discomfort while the cause is being investigated. Further testing or a diet trial may be appropriate in selected cases. The plan depends on the specific diagnosis; hair loss alone is not enough to choose a treatment.

Do not give human medicines, apply essential oils, or start a flea product or other treatment without veterinary direction. Products and medicines that are unsuitable for a particular cat can create additional risks. If medical evaluation does not identify a cause, ask the veterinarian about environmental stressors and behavior support; a behavioral diagnosis should not be made from the bald patches alone.

What to do before the appointment

  • Note when you first noticed the fur loss and whether it is spreading.
  • Record the affected areas and any licking, chewing, scratching, redness, sores, or apparent pain.
  • Bring details of parasite prevention, recent changes at home, and other changes in appetite, activity, or health.
  • If you use a flea comb, treat it as a coat check—not a test that can rule out allergy or other disease.
