Wildlife Rehabilitation vs. Keeping an Injured Wild Animal as a Pet: What to Do Instead

Wildlife rehabilitation aims to return a healthy animal to the wild. Learn why keeping an injured wild animal as a pet can harm it, endanger people, and violate local law—and what to do instead.

Wildlife rehabilitation is temporary, authorized care whose goal is to return a healthy wild animal to its natural habitat. Keeping that animal as a household pet is a different—and often unlawful—choice that can damage its welfare, prevent successful release, and expose people and pets to injury or disease.

If you find an animal that appears injured, sick, or orphaned, keep people and domestic animals back, do not assume a young animal is abandoned, and contact a local licensed wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian before attempting capture, feeding, treatment, or transport. The correct legal and practical response depends on your location and the species involved.

Rehabilitation and pet ownership have opposite purposes

Wildlife rehabilitation is defined by its outcome, not simply by the fact that a person is caring for an animal. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources describes it as “temporary care for injured, sick, or orphaned wild animals with one goal: returning a healthy animal to the wild.” Read the agency’s overview at Michigan DNR’s wildlife rehabilitation guidance.

A rehabilitator therefore plans every decision around eventual independence: species-appropriate food, medical treatment, exercise, avoidance of unnecessary human contact, and a release assessment. A pet-keeping arrangement plans for permanent human dependence and regular interaction. Those aims can conflict from the first day. The agency’s FAQ puts it plainly: “A wild animal being rehabilitated is not a pet.” That statement applies in Michigan; other jurisdictions use their own laws, but the welfare principle is broadly important. See Michigan DNR’s common rehabilitation questions.

What rehabilitation is designed to accomplish

  • Stabilize an animal that is injured, ill, or genuinely orphaned.
  • Provide care by trained people with appropriate enclosures, hygiene procedures, and veterinary support.
  • Minimize stress and human familiarity so the animal retains normal wild behavior.
  • Build or preserve the physical skills needed to feed, move, shelter, and avoid danger in the wild.
  • Release the animal only when an authorized professional determines that release is safe and lawful.

What keeping it as a pet does instead

  • Creates ongoing captivity rather than a release plan.
  • Encourages habituation—an animal becoming comfortable approaching or relying on people.
  • Can produce domestication-like behavior that makes release unsafe or impossible.
  • Places medical, dietary, behavioral, and enclosure demands on a household that may not be equipped to meet them.
  • May violate wildlife, veterinary, public-health, or endangered-species rules.

Why a wild animal that looks helpless may not need rescuing

Finding a young animal alone is not proof that it has been abandoned. North Carolina Wildlife explains that adults often leave young wildlife while they forage and advises people to consult a wildlife professional before intervening. Its guidance is available at North Carolina Wildlife’s injured and orphaned wildlife page.

Parents may be nearby but hidden, may avoid approaching while people or dogs are present, or may return only at intervals. Removing a healthy youngster can separate it from its parent, interrupt normal development, and turn a temporary period of solitude into a real orphaning event. A fledgling bird on the ground, a young mammal resting under vegetation, or a juvenile that is learning to move may all be behaving normally.

Signs that justify a professional call

Contact a rehabilitator or veterinarian for guidance when you see clear trauma, such as bleeding, a visible fracture, an animal that cannot stand or fly when its species normally can, entanglement, or collision injury. Also call when a young animal is cold, unresponsive, repeatedly vocalizing for long periods without an adult returning, or in immediate danger from traffic, construction, cats, dogs, or people. Do not diagnose from a photograph or assume that an animal is orphaned because you have watched it for only a few minutes.

What to do when you find an injured or possibly orphaned animal

  1. Stop and observe from a distance. Keep the area quiet. Move children and pets away, and avoid surrounding the animal. Ontario guidance also emphasizes distance and keeping cats and dogs away from young wildlife; see Ontario’s guidance on helping sick, injured, or orphaned wild animals.
  2. Look for immediate hazards. If the animal is in a road, exposed to a predator, trapped in a drain, or otherwise at immediate risk, do not put yourself in danger. Tell the professional exactly where it is and what hazards are present.
  3. Contact an authorized local professional. Call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife agency, or veterinarian and provide the species if known, exact location, visible injuries, how long you have watched, and whether a pet or vehicle was involved. Michigan DNR specifically encourages contacting a licensed rehabilitator before removing wildlife. Start with its rehabilitation information or your state, provincial, territorial, or national wildlife authority.
  4. Follow species-specific instructions. The professional may tell you to leave the animal where it is, watch from a particular distance, reunite a youngster with its parent, or prepare a safe transfer. Instructions differ for birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
  5. Do not feed, medicate, bathe, or treat it on your own. Incorrect food can cause aspiration, digestive injury, nutritional disease, or dangerous tameness. Human medications and improvised splints can worsen injuries. The official guidance stresses specialized care and safe transport rather than generic home treatment.
  6. Handle or transport only when directed and only if it is safe. Use the container, ventilation, temperature, and route recommended by the professional. Keep the container dark and quiet, away from children and pets, and do not open it to offer food unless instructed.
  7. Check possession rules before taking the animal. In some places, a narrowly defined temporary transfer is allowed; in others, possession without a permit is prohibited. A rescue done with good intentions can still be unlawful if you skip this step.

Rehabilitation versus pet keeping: the practical differences

Issue Wildlife rehabilitation Keeping an injured wild animal as a pet
Intended outcome Temporary care followed by preparation for release into the wild. Michigan DNR defines rehabilitation this way. Ongoing captivity, which conflicts with the release-oriented purpose of rehabilitation.
Who provides care Authorized, trained rehabilitators and, under applicable rules, veterinarians. Private possession may require authorization or may be prohibited, depending on the species and jurisdiction. Michigan DNR’s FAQ explains that rules are not a general pet license.
Human contact Limited and purposeful to reduce stress and prevent habituation. Frequent handling and pet-like interaction can create stress, dependency, and unsafe familiarity.
Facilities and routine Species-specific diet, enclosure, enrichment, hygiene, disease control, and veterinary oversight. A household may lack the space, equipment, training, and round-the-clock support required.
Safety Professionals use protocols for bites, scratches, parasites, zoonotic disease, and contaminated materials. People, children, dogs, cats, and other pets may be exposed to injury or disease.
Legal status Conducted under the permits and authorizations required where the animal is found. May be illegal even when the person intends to help.

Why household care can harm the animal

Habituation can make release fail

Wild animals learn from repeated contact. If an animal begins approaching people for food, tolerating handling, or treating a house as a safe den, it may lose the avoidance behavior needed to survive. Michigan DNR instructs rehabilitators to prevent habituation and domestication and not to treat animals in care as pets. The full FAQ is at Michigan DNR’s rehabilitation FAQ.

Diet and development are species-specific

A wild animal’s needs can change with age, season, and developmental stage. A formula suitable for one species can be dangerous for another; feeding at the wrong temperature or position can cause aspiration. Young animals may need a parent’s feeding pattern, social learning, or gradual transition to natural foods that a household cannot reproduce.

Stress is often invisible

Prey species may freeze rather than show distress. Noise, bright light, handling, unfamiliar smells, and proximity to dogs or cats can cause physiological stress even when there is no obvious struggle. A well-meaning attempt to “comfort” an animal may therefore make its condition worse.

Wildlife can injure or infect people and pets

Wild animals can bite and scratch and may carry parasites or diseases. Wounds can become infected, and contact with saliva, feces, urine, blood, or contaminated bedding creates additional hygiene concerns. Children and immunocompromised people face particular risks. Professional facilities use isolation, protective equipment, cleaning protocols, and veterinary advice that ordinary homes may not have.

What the law may require

There is no single worldwide rule for possessing an injured wild animal. Requirements vary by country, state, province, territory, municipality, species, and purpose. A rule that allows a short transfer to a licensed rehabilitator does not necessarily allow treatment at home, and a permit for one species does not authorize possession of another.

Jurisdictional example What the official guidance says How to apply it
Michigan, United States The Department of Natural Resources describes limited temporary possession for transfer to an authorized professional under specified conditions and time limits. Its FAQ also notes that federal permits may be needed for migratory birds or federally listed endangered or threatened species. See Michigan’s FAQ. Do not treat a short transfer allowance as a general rehabilitation or pet-keeping authorization. Confirm the current rule for the species and situation.
North Carolina, United States North Carolina Wildlife states that possession of most wildlife without a permit is illegal and tells the public to seek professional advice for injured or orphaned animals. See the agency’s guidance. Call before taking an animal home, even if you believe you are rescuing it.
Ontario, Canada Rehabilitation is limited to authorized wildlife custodians under provincial rules. See Ontario’s official help page. Use provincial directions and an authorized custodian rather than attempting private care.
Victoria, Australia Only registered veterinarians and authorized wildlife rehabilitators can legally care for wildlife, and keeping sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife as a pet is illegal there. See Victoria’s wildlife guidance. Arrange professional care and do not assume rescue creates a right to keep the animal.

Michigan’s 30-hour detail is not a universal standard

Michigan’s 2026 guidance says a permit applicant’s affidavit is based on at least 30 hours of hands-on experience demonstrating adequate handling skills. That is a Michigan permit qualification, not a rehabilitation success statistic and not a minimum that applies everywhere. Species, federal protections, facility standards, veterinary arrangements, and other permit conditions may also matter. Read the agency’s current explanation at Michigan DNR’s rehabilitation permit information.

When a professional tells you to transport the animal

Rescue and transport should be undertaken only when the professional says it is necessary and you can do it without risking a bite, scratch, traffic collision, or exposure to disease. Victoria’s guidance notes that rescue and transport may be undertaken if safe, while legal care remains restricted to registered veterinarians and authorized rehabilitators.

  • Ask where the animal should go and whether the destination is accepting patients.
  • Confirm the species, approximate size, condition, and any exposure to a cat, dog, vehicle, pesticide, or other hazard.
  • Use a secure container appropriate to the species, with ventilation and a towel or other safe lining if the professional recommends one.
  • Keep the container level, quiet, shaded, and away from passengers and pets.
  • Do not take photographs or open the container repeatedly if doing so delays care or increases stress.
  • Tell the receiving professional exactly what you observed and whether anyone handled or fed the animal.

If the animal is dangerous, very large, a bat, a raptor, a venomous species, or otherwise beyond your ability to handle safely, wait for trained responders. Distance is safer than an improvised capture.

Common mistakes and better alternatives

Mistake Why it causes problems Better response
Taking a baby home because no adult is visible The parent may be nearby; removal can create an unnecessary orphan. Observe from a distance and call a wildlife professional before intervening.
Offering milk, bread, meat, or a pet-food substitute Food may be nutritionally wrong or aspirated into the lungs. Wait for species-specific feeding instructions.
Trying to splint, disinfect, or medicate an injury Improvised treatment can worsen fractures, burns, shock, or poisoning. Obtain veterinary or rehabilitator directions.
Letting children or pets interact with the animal Interaction increases stress and bite, scratch, parasite, and disease risks. Clear the area and keep the animal isolated from household activity.
Assuming a permit elsewhere applies at home Wildlife law is location- and species-specific. Check the authority where the animal was found and where it will be transported.
Keeping a non-releasable animal as a personal pet Permanent care may still require a sanctuary, education permit, or other authorization. Ask the agency or rehabilitator about lawful placement options.

A simple decision framework

  1. Is there immediate danger? If yes, move people and pets away and call the appropriate wildlife or emergency service. Do not attempt a hazardous rescue.
  2. Is the animal clearly injured or ill? Contact a licensed rehabilitator or veterinarian and follow instructions.
  3. Is it a young animal with no visible adult? Assume neither abandonment nor safety. Observe from a distance and seek professional advice.
  4. Have you been told to transport it? Confirm the destination, container, route, and handling method before moving it.
  5. Are you considering keeping it? Stop and check the law. Rehabilitation’s purpose is release, and private pet ownership may be prohibited or harmful even if the animal cannot currently be released.

What happens if the animal cannot be released?

Some animals have permanent injuries, chronic illness, or behavior changes that make release unsafe. That does not automatically make them suitable pets. A licensed rehabilitator, veterinarian, wildlife authority, sanctuary, or permitted educational facility must determine whether permanent placement is lawful and humane. The right outcome may be a specialized non-release facility or, where suffering cannot be relieved, a veterinary end-of-life decision. A private household should not make that determination alone.

Bottom line for a finder

Do not convert a rescue into pet ownership. Keep your distance, protect the animal from people and domestic animals, and obtain local professional advice before feeding, handling, possessing, or transporting it. Wildlife rehabilitation is temporary, specialized care directed toward a lawful return to the wild; the rules and the permitted exceptions must be confirmed for the exact species and location.
