8 Varmints We Should Appreciate—and How to Live Safely Alongside Them

Skunks, raccoons, coyotes, vultures, foxes, crows, opossums, and groundhogs can be nuisances near homes yet valuable parts of an ecosystem. Here is how pet owners can appreciate their roles without feeding or endangering wildlife.

Animals called “varmints” can be a nuisance near a home and still perform useful ecological work. The right response is not blind affection or blanket eradication: protect pets and property, remove attractants, observe wildlife from a distance, and manage genuine conflicts lawfully.

“Varmint” is not a scientific category. It is a human label for an animal that seems troublesome in a particular place—often near a home, garden, chicken coop, or garbage bin. The same animal may be inconvenient at the property line and valuable in the wider ecosystem.

That does not mean you should feed, touch, shelter, or deliberately attract wildlife. For pet owners, responsible coexistence means appreciating what these animals do, protecting pets and livestock, removing food attractants, and responding to actual conflicts with humane and lawful methods.

1. Skunks

Skunks are best known for their spray, but they are also remarkably useful generalist foragers. Their diet can include insects, small vertebrates, fruit, nuts, and carrion. In the process, skunks provide several ecological services: they help control some invertebrates and small animals, disperse seeds, scavenge dead matter, and later serve as prey for larger predators.

They can still be a serious nuisance around a home. A skunk may dig beneath a porch or shed, raid unsecured pet food, damage a lawn while searching for grubs, or spray a curious dog. Keep pets supervised outdoors, especially at night, and bring food bowls inside. If a skunk is denning beneath a structure, do not block the entrance until you are confident the animal—and any young—has left. Local wildlife authorities or a qualified wildlife-control professional can explain the lawful approach in your area.

What “embrace” means: tolerate a skunk passing through when it is not causing damage; do not hand-feed it or encourage it to remain near your pets.

2. Raccoons

Raccoons are adaptable omnivores and scavengers. National Park Service material describes them eating plant material, fruit, seeds, carrion, insects, rodents, amphibians, fish, eggs, and other prey. In some habitats, their feeding helps control rodents and other small animals, while their movement can disperse seeds.

Unfortunately, raccoons are quick to learn that human homes offer easy meals. Open trash, compost, birdseed, outdoor pet food, and unsecured chicken feed can make them bold. A raccoon that repeatedly receives food may lose its wariness, become aggressive when a food source is withheld, or den in an attic, chimney, crawl space, or shed. Those situations can create property damage and potential exposure to wildlife diseases.

Use animal-resistant garbage containers, secure compost, clean spilled birdseed, and feed pets indoors. Never approach a raccoon that appears sick, unusually tame, disoriented, or aggressive. Keep dogs away from wildlife and ask local animal-control or wildlife officials how to report a concerning animal.

Pet-owner rule: a raccoon’s ecological value is not a reason to let it share your pets’ food, shelter, or living space.

3. Coyotes

Coyotes are predators that can influence the numbers and behavior of smaller mammals. In landscapes altered by people, their presence may help limit some mesopredators and rodents. That can affect the wider food web. But the outcome is not universal: whether coyotes increase or reduce particular species depends on the landscape, available prey, other predators, and human management.

Coyotes can also prey on livestock, outdoor cats, and small dogs. Even a large dog can be injured in a confrontation. Do not leave small pets unattended outdoors, especially at dawn, dusk, or night. Walk dogs on a leash, keep them close, and remove outdoor food sources. Secure poultry, rabbits, and other small livestock in sturdy enclosures.

If a coyote merely passes through, hazing techniques recommended by your local wildlife agency may help preserve its fear of people. If it repeatedly approaches people, acts aggressively, enters a fenced yard, or kills domestic animals, report the behavior and follow local agency instructions. Wildlife-management rules differ by state, county, municipality, and park.

The balanced view: coyotes can be important predators and still require firm boundaries around pets and livestock.

4. Vultures

Vultures are specialized cleanup organisms. By consuming carcasses, they remove dead animal matter from the landscape and help return nutrients to ecological systems. Their appearance and association with death can make them unpopular, but those traits are precisely connected to a valuable role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vulture species do not all face the same threats. A particularly serious example comes from the Indian subcontinent, where the veterinary drug diclofenac contaminated livestock carcasses. USGS research reports that diclofenac is extremely toxic to Old World Gyps vultures and that exposure caused catastrophic population declines.

In North America, vultures may gather around roadkill, livestock remains, landfills, or food waste. Large groups can occasionally create concerns near airports, buildings, or livestock facilities. Do not disturb a roost or attempt to handle an injured bird without professional advice. If you keep pets outdoors, supervise them around carcasses and prevent them from eating unknown dead animals.

Why embrace them: an animal that looks unpleasant can still perform one of nature’s most important sanitation jobs.

5. Red foxes

Red foxes eat rodents and other small animals, and that can benefit farms and rural properties. Fairfax County identifies foxes as predators of rats and mice, while North Carolina wildlife guidance notes that their appetite for mice and woodchucks can help farmers. Depending on the season and habitat, foxes may also eat insects, fruit, carrion, garbage, poultry, or other small domestic animals.

That last part matters to pet owners. A fox can be useful in the wider landscape and still be unacceptable around a chicken coop, rabbit hutch, or a litter of kittens. Use secure, roofed enclosures for poultry and small livestock, and do not leave small pets outside unsupervised. Avoid feeding foxes: food can make them comfortable around people and encourage repeated visits.

A fox seen moving through a yard is not automatically a problem. However, an animal actively attacking livestock or pets requires situation-specific action. Contact local wildlife or animal-control authorities rather than improvising; trapping, relocation, and lethal-control rules vary widely.

A useful distinction: tolerating a fox in the landscape is different from tolerating an ongoing attack on your animals.

6. Crows

Crows are opportunistic omnivores. They may raid crops, eat insects, consume carrion, find food in garbage, and exploit almost any seasonal opportunity. Their feeding can be aggravating in a garden or field while also helping remove dead matter and consume some insects and other small animals.

Claims that one crow family invariably consumes a specific enormous number of caterpillars, grubs, or other insects should be treated cautiously. Feeding varies with the crop, season, habitat, number of birds, and food available. It is more accurate to say that crows can provide insect-eating and scavenging services without assigning one universal consumption figure.

To reduce conflicts, cover vulnerable crops with appropriate netting, secure garbage, and avoid intentionally feeding large groups. Crows are intelligent, social wild birds; close-range feeding can increase noise, droppings, and dependence rather than creating a healthy relationship.

Look past the nuisance: the same bird that steals from a garden may also consume insects and help clean up carrion.

7. Opossums

Opossums are omnivorous scavengers and insect-eaters. They may consume fruit, insects, carrion, and other available foods, making them part of the cleanup and food-web processes around homes and wooded areas. They are generally more interested in avoiding trouble than confronting people or pets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One popular claim needs correction: the statement that a single opossum eats 5,000 ticks per year, or kills more than 90 percent of the ticks it encounters, is not established strongly enough to repeat as settled fact. Later ground-truthing research has challenged the scale of that narrative and highlighted limitations in the captive-animal evidence. Opossums may consume ticks while grooming, but they should not be treated as a dependable tick-control program.

Do not feed an opossum or allow it access to pet food. Keep dogs away from any wild animal, because even a usually shy species can bite when cornered. If an opossum is denning in a building or repeatedly visiting a feeding area, remove attractants and seek local guidance rather than handling it.

The honest benefit: opossums are useful, low-profile scavengers and insect-eaters—but their role should be described without overstated tick statistics.

8. Groundhogs

Groundhogs, also called woodchucks, are herbivores that can alter soil through their burrowing. Abandoned burrows may later provide shelter for foxes, rabbits, and other wildlife. Their digging and feeding can therefore have site-specific effects beyond the immediate animal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Near people, however, groundhogs can damage vegetable gardens, crops, banks, foundations, drainage areas, and other infrastructure. A burrow beside a building, road, retaining wall, or livestock enclosure is not harmless simply because another animal might eventually use it.

Protect gardens with suitable fencing, remove brush and other cover where appropriate, and ask local wildlife officials about humane exclusion. Do not seal an occupied burrow, and check local rules before trapping, relocating, or otherwise removing an animal. If burrowing threatens a structure, road, or animal enclosure, deal with the risk promptly rather than waiting for the damage to grow.

Responsible tolerance: a groundhog in a distant meadow may be part of a functioning habitat; one undermining a foundation needs conflict management.

Three wildlife claims that deserve careful wording

  • Opossums and ticks: opossums may eat ticks, but the often-repeated annual total of 5,000 ticks per animal is not a firmly established field measurement.
  • Crows and insects: crow families do eat insects, but a dramatic consumption number is not a universal constant. Conditions matter.
  • Coyotes and biodiversity: predators can influence mesopredators and prey, but coyotes do not produce the same biodiversity outcome in every landscape.

Careful wording is not a rejection of these animals’ ecological roles. It is how wildlife education stays useful instead of replacing one oversimplification with another.

How to embrace wildlife without endangering pets

  1. Remove artificial food sources. Bring pet bowls indoors, secure trash and compost, clean up spilled birdseed, and store livestock feed in wildlife-resistant containers.
  2. Protect vulnerable animals. Supervise cats and small dogs outdoors. Use secure, covered housing for chickens, rabbits, and other small livestock.
  3. Keep your distance. Never approach, touch, corner, or attempt to hand-feed wild animals. A sick, injured, unusually tame, or aggressive animal needs professional guidance.
  4. Make buildings less attractive. Inspect roofs, vents, chimneys, crawl spaces, sheds, and porch foundations for possible entry points. Exclude animals only after confirming that no adults or young are inside.
  5. Observe without interfering. National Park Service guidance recommends distance, binoculars, telephoto or zoom equipment, secure food and trash, and compliance with posted park rules. Some parks use minimum distances such as 25 yards for ordinary wildlife and 100 yards for large predators, but requirements vary by park and species.
  6. Use local expertise for conflicts. Wildlife laws and approved methods differ across jurisdictions. Contact a state wildlife agency, local animal-control office, park authority, or qualified wildlife professional when an animal threatens people, pets, livestock, or property.

What “embrace” should mean

These eight animals are not beneficial everywhere, and none should be romanticized. A coyote near a chicken coop, a raccoon in an attic, a skunk beneath a porch, or a groundhog undermining a foundation may require action. Ecological value does not cancel a real safety or property problem.

But indiscriminate fear and eradication are not better answers. Skunks, raccoons, coyotes, vultures, foxes, crows, opossums, and groundhogs all participate in food webs, nutrient cycling, scavenging, predation, seed dispersal, or habitat use. The most responsible approach is informed coexistence: leave wild animals wild, remove the rewards that draw them close, protect pets and livestock, and manage genuine conflicts according to local rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “embracing” varmint wildlife mean feeding it?

No. Embracing wildlife means informed tolerance and responsible observation, not feeding, touching, approaching, or allowing animals into buildings. Remove food attractants and manage genuine risks.

How can I protect my pets from the animals in this list?

Keep pets supervised, use leashes where appropriate, secure garbage and pet food, and house chickens, rabbits, and other small livestock in sturdy enclosures. Contact local wildlife or animal-control officials about aggressive, sick, or repeatedly conflict-prone animals.

Do opossums really eat 5,000 ticks every year?

No. The claim that one opossum removes 5,000 ticks per year is not established strongly enough to treat as settled fact. Opossums may consume ticks while grooming, but they are not a reliable substitute for proven tick-prevention measures.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: “Embrace” varmints by respecting their ecological roles—not by feeding, touching, or inviting them into your pets’ space. Observe from a distance, secure attractants, protect vulnerable animals, and get local guidance when wildlife causes a genuine conflict.
