An amateur photographer went to Oregon’s Hug Point to photograph a waterfall and instead captured a bird that had never before been accepted as a Blue Rock-Thrush record in the United States. After Michael Sanchez brightened the image, the bird’s cobalt-blue and burnt-orange plumage became visible. Formal review later confirmed the discovery: it was an adult male Monticola solitarius philippensis, an Asian subspecies thousands of miles from its expected range.
Michael Sanchez thought he had photographed an ordinary dark bird while visiting Oregon’s Hug Point. After brightening the image, he noticed cobalt-blue and burnt-orange plumage. The bird was an adult male Blue Rock-Thrush (Monticola solitarius), an Old World species native to parts of Europe and Asia—not a familiar North American bluebird.

From waterfall photograph to historic bird record
Sanchez, a middle-school band director and recent photography hobbyist, visited Hug Point State Recreation Site on the northern Oregon Coast to photograph waterfalls at sunrise. He had purchased a Sony Alpha 6700 on March 30, 2024, and was still learning how to use it.
The bird was not the subject of the outing. Sanchez initially described it as a “little black bird.” Only while reviewing and brightening the photograph later did he see the blue back and orange-chestnut underside. He posted the image online to ask what he had found.
That request brought the photograph to the attention of local bird-records experts, who contacted Sanchez for details about the location, date, circumstances, and original images. The discovery illustrates an important feature of modern birding: a casual photograph can become valuable scientific documentation when it preserves enough detail to be independently evaluated.

Adult males of this form are visually striking: blue on the upperparts and warm orange or chestnut below. In a dim or underexposed photograph, however, the bird can look nearly black. The apparent resemblance to some blue-and-orange North American birds is only visual. Blue Rock-Thrush is not an American bluebird and is not part of the ordinary North American thrush fauna.
It is also important to distinguish a first accepted record from the discovery of a new species. Sanchez did not discover a species new to science. He photographed a known Eurasian and Asian species in a place where it had not previously been accepted onto the U.S. checklist.
Why the Oregon record was so unusual
Hug Point is near Cannon Beach on the northern Oregon Coast. The nearest expected breeding populations of the relevant Blue Rock-Thrush form are thousands of miles away across the Pacific. Bird Alliance of Oregon described a direct journey from Hug Point to the nearest known breeding population as roughly 4,000 miles of open ocean.
That distance does not prove how the bird arrived. Several possibilities can be considered for a transoceanic vagrant, including navigational error, weather-assisted displacement, or transport associated with a vessel. The ABA Checklist Committee considered ship assistance but found no evidence supporting that explanation. The bird’s actual route remains unknown.
The record was therefore not accepted merely because the bird looked unusual. Reviewers had to consider identification, the bird’s age and plumage, its likely subspecies, the circumstances of the observation, and whether human transport could explain its presence. The committee concluded that the evidence supported a naturally occurring vagrant record.

How the sighting was verified
Rare-bird records are evaluated through a process designed to separate credible observations from misidentifications, escaped birds, captive-origin birds, and poorly documented reports.
- Initial documentation: Sanchez retained photographs and supplied the date, location, and circumstances of the encounter.
- Expert assessment: Birders and regional records experts examined the images and sought additional details.
- State review: The Oregon Bird Records Committee reviewed the submission and accepted it as BRTS-2024-01.
- Regional checklist review: The American Birding Association Checklist Committee considered the state decision, identification, provenance, and the broader pattern of records.
- Checklist acceptance: In September 2024, the ABA committee accepted Blue Rock-Thrush to the ABA Checklist by a unanimous 8–0 vote and assigned it ABA Code 5.
The Oregon Bird Records Committee maintains the state’s rare-bird documentation system, while the ABA Checklist Committee determines which species and records belong on the ABA Checklist. Readers who find an unusual bird should preserve original photographs, record the exact location and date, note the bird’s behavior and circumstances, and submit the sighting through the relevant regional reporting system rather than relying only on a social-media identification.
For species research and reporting tools, readers can also consult eBird and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. These resources can help with identification and documentation, but an online sighting entry is not automatically the same thing as a formally accepted state or ABA record.
The Oregon and California birds: one or two?
The Oregon record was part of an extraordinary cluster. A Blue Rock-Thrush was photographed on the Southeast Farallon Islands off San Francisco on April 25–26, 2024, only four days after the Oregon photograph.
It is tempting to assume that the two observations involved the same bird, but the ABA report says that question was debatable and was not essential to the committee’s decision. The safest wording is that two 2024 records occurred on the Pacific Coast within days of each other; whether the birds were the same individual remains unresolved.

The ABA committee also reconsidered a 1997 British Columbia record. That earlier record had not previously been added to the ABA Checklist because of concerns about provenance. The committee’s discussion means the Oregon bird should not be called the first Blue Rock-Thrush ever seen in North America. It was the first accepted record in the United States, while the history of North American records includes the disputed or previously unlisted British Columbia bird.
What “bird of the century” really means here
“Bird of the century” is useful as rhetorical shorthand for the drama of the discovery, but it is not an official designation awarded to this Blue Rock-Thrush by the ABA or the Oregon committee.
The phrase has been used in earlier birding history for other spectacular rarities, including the Ross’s Gull found in Massachusetts in 1974 and publicized in 1975. That bird represented the first record for the Lower 48 states and caused a major birding phenomenon. Applying the phrase to the Oregon Blue Rock-Thrush should therefore be understood as a headline flourish, not a formal ranking against every remarkable bird discovery of the last hundred years.

Sanchez’s experience offers a practical lesson for anyone photographing wildlife: review the files carefully, including images that seemed unimportant at the time. A dark, distant, or partially obscured animal may contain details that are invisible on a camera’s rear screen.

Why the record matters
This was more than a lucky photograph of a colorful bird. It became the first accepted Blue Rock-Thrush record for Oregon, the first accepted record for the United States, and—according to Bird Alliance of Oregon—the first U.S. first record involving a land bird to be established in Oregon.
It also shows why rare-bird science needs both observers and careful committees. Sanchez supplied an unexpected photograph. Local experts recognized its significance. Oregon reviewers assessed the state record. The ABA committee then evaluated the evidence in a wider geographic and provenance context.
The final result is remarkable without exaggeration: a photographer who went to capture a waterfall accidentally recorded an adult Asian thrush thousands of miles from its expected range, and the record survived formal scrutiny. The bird may be remembered as a “bird of the century,” but its official achievement is clearer and more meaningful: Blue Rock-Thrush is now an accepted member of the United States bird record.
Source note: This account is based on the Oregon Bird Records Committee annual record, the American Birding Association Checklist Committee report, Bird Alliance of Oregon’s coverage, and reporting on Michael Sanchez’s photograph and identification process.
