American Bulldogs and American Bullies are separate breeds. They share some bulldog ancestry and can overlap in height, head shape and muscular build, so a photograph alone cannot always identify one reliably. The American Bulldog is described by the United Kennel Club (UKC) as a powerful, athletic working dog and family companion. The American Bully is a compact, thick-set companion breed developed from an American Pit Bull Terrier foundation with influence from several bulldog breeds, including the American Bulldog.
The most useful clues are the dog’s documented breed, adult height measured at the withers, overall proportions and muzzle-to-head relationship. Those clues indicate a tendency, not proof of lineage.

The short answer
Look at the whole dog rather than one “tell.” An American Bully generally has a compact, thick-set outline, heavy muscle and a companion-breed presentation. An American Bulldog generally appears more athletic and slightly longer-bodied, with a working-dog structure; however, the UKC recognizes both leaner standard-type and thicker bully-type American Bulldogs. Because of that internal variation, a large American Bully and a bully-type American Bulldog can look remarkably similar.
Height can narrow the possibilities, but it cannot settle the question. UKC’s desirable mature height for American Bulldogs is 22–27 inches (55.9–68.6 cm) for males and 20–25 inches (50.8–63.5 cm) for females. American Bullies are divided into Pocket, Standard, Classic and XL classes, several of which overlap those measurements. A pedigree or trustworthy registration record is the strongest practical evidence for an individual dog.

American Bulldog and American Bully compared
| Feature | American Bulldog (UKC standard) | American Bully (UKC standard) |
|---|---|---|
| Breed role | Working dog associated with catching hogs and cattle and protecting property, as well as a family companion | First and foremost a companion breed |
| Overall outline | Powerful, athletic, strongly muscled and well boned; body slightly longer than tall | Compact, strong, thick-set and muscular; balance, proportion, soundness and muscle tone are emphasized |
| Internal types or classes | Standard type is leaner and more athletic; bully type is thicker and more powerful | Pocket, Standard, Classic and XL; Classic uses Standard height ranges but has a lighter frame |
| Adult height | Males desirably 22–27 in; females 20–25 in | Pocket, Standard/Classic and XL ranges listed below |
| Head and muzzle | Large, broad head and broad, thick muzzle; muzzle is 30–40% of head length in standard type and 25–35% in bully type | Large, broad head with a broad, blocky or slightly square muzzle measuring 25–35% of overall head length |
| Coat | Short and close, no longer than 1 inch under the standard | Glossy, smooth and close; any color or pattern except merle under the standard |
These are registry descriptions of ideal adult dogs, not a field test. Mixed ancestry, immature growth, conditioning, cropping or cosmetic presentation can make visual comparisons less dependable.
How the breeds are related
The names sound as though one breed might simply be a smaller or newer version of the other, but that is not how the UKC defines them. The American Bully developed as a breed of its own from an American Pit Bull Terrier foundation, with influence from the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, English Bulldog and Olde English Bulldogge. The UKC recognized the American Bully on July 15, 2013.
That history explains why some American Bullies and American Bulldogs share broad heads, substantial bone and a muscular appearance. It does not make the breeds interchangeable. The American Bully standard explicitly treats the breed as its own type rather than requiring it to replicate any single foundation breed. An American Bulldog’s working-dog history likewise does not make every muscular bulldog an American Bulldog.
Size: measure the adult dog, and use the numbers carefully
Measure height at the withers—the top of the shoulder blades—not at the head. Compare a mature dog with the sex-specific ranges, and remember that the standards describe desirable or ideal height rather than a guaranteed measurement for every registered individual. Weight is not a fixed American Bulldog test: the UKC says it should remain proportionate to height.
American Bulldog height
- Males: 22–27 inches, approximately 55.9–68.6 cm.
- Females: 20–25 inches, approximately 50.8–63.5 cm.
The American Bulldog standard distinguishes a leaner, more athletic standard type from a thicker, more powerful bully type. Consequently, two dogs at the same height can have noticeably different amounts of bone and muscle while still fitting the breed’s described variation.

American Bully height classes
| Class | Males (inches) | Males (rounded cm) | Females (inches) | Females (rounded cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 to under 17 | 35.6 to under 43.2 | 13 to under 16 | 33.0 to under 40.6 | |
| Standard | 17–20 | 43.2–50.8 | 16–19 | 40.6–48.3 |
| Classic | 17–20 | 43.2–50.8 | 16–19 | 40.6–48.3 |
| XL | Over 20 to 23 | Over 50.8 to 58.4 | Over 19 to 22 | Over 48.3 to 55.9 |
Classic is not a separate height band: it shares Standard’s ranges but has a lighter frame and less overall body mass. A male XL American Bully can fall within the lower part of the American Bulldog male range, and a female XL can overlap the lower part of the American Bulldog female range. A tall Standard American Bully can also approach the shorter end of an American Bulldog’s range. Height therefore supports an identification; it does not establish one.
Read the body proportions before the head
American Bulldog tendencies
The UKC describes the American Bulldog as powerful, athletic, strongly muscled and well boned, with a body slightly longer than tall. Standard-type dogs tend to look leaner and more athletic. Bully-type dogs are thicker and more powerful, which can reduce the visual difference from an American Bully. Look for an athlete’s outline—substantial muscle without assuming that maximum bulk is required.

American Bully tendencies
The American Bully standard emphasizes a compact, strong, thick-set body. Overall balance and soundness matter alongside muscle tone. Pocket, Standard and XL dogs can differ greatly in height, while Classic dogs use Standard height but carry less mass. A compact torso, heavy forequarters and a very dense appearance point toward an American Bully, but they are clues rather than authentication.
Do not use sheer mass as a quality test. The UKC standard states, “Quality is never to be sacrificed in favor of size and mass.” An unusually bulky dog may be poorly conditioned, overweight or outside a healthy interpretation of the standard; bulk alone cannot tell you the breed.
Head and muzzle: useful proportions, unreliable shortcuts
Both breeds have broad heads and substantial muzzles, so “blocky head” is not a dependable distinction. The American Bully standard gives a muzzle length of 25–35% of overall head length. The American Bulldog standard gives 30–40% for standard-type dogs and 25–35% for bully-type dogs. Those overlapping ranges explain why casual visual judgments often fail.

Use the head only after considering the complete outline. A broad, slightly square American Bully muzzle and a broad, thick American Bulldog muzzle can look alike from the front. Camera angle, lens distortion, facial wrinkles, natural variation and the dog’s age can make a proportion appear shorter or longer than it is. These percentages are registry measurements, not a practical requirement that an owner measure a photograph with a ruler.
Breathing and exaggeration
The American Bully standard lists a muzzle so short and blunt that it interferes with normal breathing as an eliminating fault. That is a welfare safeguard, not a desirable identification feature. A short muzzle, extreme head width or exaggerated bulk should never be presented as proof of a superior American Bully or American Bulldog.
Coat and color clues
Both breeds have short coats, so coat length rarely separates them. The American Bulldog standard specifies a short, close coat no longer than one inch. The American Bully standard calls for a glossy, smooth, close coat and permits any color or pattern except merle under that standard.
Color is not a reliable breed identifier. Many colors occur across bulldog-type dogs, and a color pattern can be produced in mixed-breed dogs as well. Treat coat appearance as a supporting observation only, never as a substitute for records.
Role and temperament language
American Bulldog
The UKC describes essential American Bulldog characteristics in terms of catching hogs and cattle and protecting property, while also describing the breed as a loving family companion. It notes that young dogs may be somewhat standoffish with strangers. This is breed-standard language about an ideal and traditional role; it is not a prediction that every American Bulldog will be suspicious, protective or difficult with visitors.

American Bully
The UKC describes the American Bully as a confident companion with a gentle and friendly demeanor. Aggression toward humans is characterized as uncharacteristic and undesirable in the standard. Again, a standard describes a target for breeding and judging, not an individual dog’s guaranteed behavior. Early socialization, training, environment, health and prior experience all affect what an owner actually sees.
Temperament should not be used as a visual breed test. A friendly American Bulldog is still an American Bulldog, and an American Bully that is anxious or poorly socialized has not thereby become another breed.

When you need to make a careful first assessment—at a shelter, in a neighborhood or from a photograph—work through these steps in order.
- Ask what is documented. Check registration papers, an adoption record, a breeder contract or a verifiable pedigree. Documentation outranks a guess from appearance.
- Confirm the dog’s age. Puppies and adolescents have not reached their adult height or final muscle distribution. Avoid assigning a class or breed from a young dog’s current proportions.
- Measure height at the withers. Record inches or centimeters and compare with the sex-specific American Bulldog ranges and the American Bully class ranges. Note overlaps instead of treating a boundary as decisive.
- Assess the complete outline. Ask whether the dog looks slightly longer-bodied and athletic or distinctly compact and thick-set. Account for the American Bulldog’s standard and bully types and the American Bully’s Classic class.
- Inspect the head without over-weighting it. A broad head is shared. Consider muzzle proportion as a secondary clue only; do not label the dog from a single “blocky” feature.
- Check the coat. Confirm that it is short and close, then treat color and texture as supporting details rather than proof.
- Separate breed clues from behavior. Note behavior for safe handling and training, but do not infer breed from whether a dog is outgoing, reserved or protective.
- State uncertainty honestly. If records are missing and traits overlap, report that the dog appears consistent with one type rather than claiming a definitive identification.
Why photographs and casual labels are often wrong
- Height overlap: Standard, Classic and XL Bullies can overlap American Bulldog ranges.
- Variation within American Bulldogs: Standard-type and bully-type dogs have visibly different frames.
- Shared ancestry: The American Bully includes American Bulldog influence, so similar heads and bone are expected.
- Age and condition: A growing dog, an overweight dog or a highly conditioned dog can look unlike the standard ideal.
- Perspective: A close-up lens enlarges the head and shortens the apparent muzzle; a low camera angle makes a dog look taller or heavier.
- Informal naming: Shelter listings and social-media captions may use “bully,” “bulldog” or “pit bull” as broad descriptions rather than verified breed names.
“Pit bull” is often used informally for several similar-looking dogs. American Bully and American Bulldog are specific breed names in the UKC standards and should not be treated as interchangeable labels.

For ownership, housing rules, insurance records or breeding decisions, rely on documentation rather than a visual opinion. Ask the current owner, shelter or breeder for registration or pedigree records and verify that the paperwork belongs to the dog in question. A veterinarian or qualified breed expert can help interpret physical traits and assess the dog safely, but even an expert may not authenticate lineage from appearance alone.

The standards reviewed here do not establish the accuracy of any particular DNA test, compare test providers or provide comparative health statistics. Do not treat an unverified test result, a social-media label or a breed stereotype as conclusive evidence.
Welfare points that matter more than the label
Whatever the breed designation, sound movement, comfortable breathing, appropriate body condition and stable behavior are more important than exaggerated features. The American Bully standard’s warning against sacrificing quality for size and mass applies directly to how these dogs are discussed and bred. A very short muzzle that compromises breathing is not a badge of type. Likewise, extreme heaviness should not be marketed as proof of authenticity.
Use the standards to understand intended structure, not to rank individual dogs by how extreme they look. Responsible evaluation asks whether the dog can move, breathe and behave comfortably, then considers what the records establish about breed.

| Question | What the standards support | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Is this a distinct breed? | Yes. UKC treats the American Bulldog and American Bully as separate breeds. | They do not authenticate an individual dog without lineage evidence. |
| How tall should it be? | They provide desirable or ideal adult ranges and classes. | They do not require every dog to fit one exact height or prove breed by height alone. |
| What should it look like? | They describe tendencies in build, head, muzzle and coat. | They do not make one visual feature a definitive diagnostic test. |
| How will it behave? | They describe working or companion ideals and undesirable human aggression. | They do not guarantee an individual dog’s temperament. |
| Is one healthier? | They include welfare-oriented limits against harmful exaggeration. | They do not provide comparative health statistics, lifespan figures or veterinary outcomes. |
Bottom-line identification rule
Start with records. If records are unavailable, combine adult height, overall proportions and muzzle relationship, while explicitly allowing for overlap and variation. A compact, thick-set companion type is more consistent with an American Bully; a slightly longer-bodied, athletic working type is more consistent with an American Bulldog. Neither impression, by itself, proves the breed.
