Call a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately if a newborn puppy is struggling to breathe, gasping, blue or pale, collapsed, unresponsive, seizing, profoundly weak, unable to suckle, or markedly cold. Persistent distressed crying, poor feeding, separation from the litter, an abnormal temperature, or failure to gain weight also deserve prompt same-day veterinary advice. Newborn puppies can deteriorate in a matter of hours, so do not wait for several warning signs to appear.
Emergency signs that warrant a veterinary hospital now
Use the puppy’s overall condition, not one isolated sign, to decide how urgently to act. The following findings should be treated as emergencies:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Breathing difficulty: gasping, labored or noisy breathing, repeated pauses, or a blue, gray, or very pale tongue or gums.
- Collapse or unresponsiveness: the puppy cannot be roused, suddenly goes limp, or does not respond normally to touch.
- Seizures or abnormal neurologic behavior: tremors that progress to seizures, severe disorientation, or loss of consciousness. Severe low blood sugar can progress to seizures, coma, and death.
- Profound weakness: the puppy cannot hold its head up, has lost muscle tone, or cannot crawl toward the dam and litter.
- Inability to suckle: it repeatedly cannot latch or swallow, or is too weak to nurse.
- Marked chilling: the puppy feels unusually cold, especially when paired with lethargy or poor feeding.
These signs come from neonatal-care guidance from Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA Animal Hospitals, along with a 2024 peer-reviewed review of neonatal hypoglycemia. They are practical triage indicators, not a home diagnostic test. A puppy can have a serious infection or congenital problem without showing every sign on this list.
Why one severe sign is enough
Neonates have little reserve. A puppy does not need to be unconscious, blue, and seizing before it merits emergency help. Gasping alone can indicate a life-threatening oxygen problem. A puppy that suddenly cannot suckle may already be too weak to maintain blood sugar. A markedly cold, limp puppy may be entering a cycle of hypothermia, dehydration, and hypoglycemia. Call while arranging transport rather than waiting to see whether another symptom appears.

When a same-day examination is the safest choice
Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible—even if the puppy is still conscious—when you notice a gradual change rather than a dramatic collapse.
Early fading-puppy clues
- Less activity than littermates or spending increasing time away from the dam and pile.
- Weak, high-pitched, or persistent crying instead of settling after nursing.
- Reluctance to nurse, shorter feeds, or repeated failure to stay latched.
- No weight gain, or weight gain that is slower than that of the rest of the litter.
- Vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, or a generally dull appearance.
VCA describes low birth weight or failure to gain at the same rate as littermates, decreased activity, separation, inability to suckle, and weak high-pitched crying as typical fading-puppy signs. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine quotes veterinarian Alyssa Baratta-Martin: “Lack of weight gain is usually the first sign there is a problem.” She also advises that a suspected problem should be seen by a veterinarian right away because neonatal conditions can worsen very quickly.
Do not dismiss crying as a personality difference. A healthy puppy generally settles after effective nursing and remains with the dam and litter. Repeated crying, restlessness, or a weak, shrill cry can accompany chilling, inadequate milk intake, low blood sugar, dehydration, infection, or another problem. Conversely, extreme quietness can represent severe lethargy rather than comfort.

Weigh each puppy on a gram scale using a schedule your veterinarian recommends. Record the date, time, weight, and whether the puppy nursed effectively. Compare the trend with the puppy’s own previous measurements and with littermates. A single low number may reflect a small birth size, but stagnant or falling weight is more concerning. A puppy that is still moving and crying can nevertheless be deteriorating if it is not gaining.
Temperature: use the puppy’s age, not an adult-dog benchmark
Newborns cannot regulate body temperature independently. A rectal reading is more useful than judging warmth by hand, but a number must be interpreted alongside nursing, alertness, and breathing. VCA’s reference ranges are:
| Age | Reference rectal temperature | Urgency note |
|---|---|---|
| First week | 95–99°F (35–37.2°C) | Below 94°F (34.3°C) can be life-threatening. |
| Second and third weeks | 97–100°F (36.1–37.8°C) | Interpret with clinical signs; an ill-looking puppy needs advice even within this range. |
| Fourth week | 100–102°F (37.8–38.9°C) | Do not use an adult dog’s normal temperature as the only comparison. |
A low reading with weakness, poor nursing, or reduced responsiveness is an emergency. A seemingly normal reading does not make a lethargic or non-nursing puppy safe to watch at home. If obtaining a temperature would delay a call or handling the puppy risks injury, call first and follow the clinician’s instructions.
How to interpret a cold puppy
Touch is an imperfect screen. A puppy may feel cool after exposure to a draft, or feel warm while still having abnormal circulation or illness. The important combination is the puppy’s age, measured temperature when safely obtained, behavior, breathing, and ability to nurse. Tell the clinic the exact temperature, time, thermometer type, and how the puppy looked when it was measured.

Why chilling, poor intake, dehydration, and low blood sugar form a dangerous cycle
Merck explains that neonatal puppies have limited temperature control, immature immune defenses, and little reserve for maintaining fluids and energy. Chilling slows gut movement and digestion and can impair immunity and nursing. A chilled puppy often stops feeding; inadequate intake then contributes to dehydration and hypoglycemia, which further reduce strength and the ability to nurse.
Hypoglycemia can be subtle at first—weakness, decreased activity, or failure to latch—and can progress to tremors, seizures, coma, and death. This feedback loop is why waiting to see whether a puppy “perks up” can be dangerous. Causes may include inadequate milk intake, poor maternal milk supply or illness, birth complications, congenital defects, infection, parasites, and environmental stress.
More than one puppy may be affected. If several littermates are cold, crying, weak, or failing to gain, tell the veterinarian immediately. A shared problem such as insufficient milk, environmental chilling, infection, or maternal illness may be involved. Even when only one puppy looks ill, the dam and the rest of the litter provide important context for the examination.
What to do while you call and travel
- Call before attempting treatment. Tell the veterinarian the puppy’s age, breed or approximate size, birth history, current signs, temperature if safely obtained, last successful nursing, recent weights, and whether other littermates are affected. Ask which emergency facility can receive a neonatal patient.
- Prevent further chilling. Keep the puppy dry, supported, and away from drafts during transport. Use gentle, indirect warmth and follow the veterinarian’s specific directions.
- Rewarm gradually. Merck and VCA caution that rapid rewarming can cause serious complications. VCA describes gradual warming over approximately 30–60 minutes. A heating pad can burn a weak puppy that cannot move away, so never place the puppy directly on a hot surface or leave heat unmonitored.
- Do not force food or liquid. Do not syringe-feed, force-feed, or tube-feed a weak or chilled puppy unless a veterinarian has taught you the technique and specifically directs it. VCA warns that milk entering the lungs can cause aspiration pneumonia or death; hypothermia also reduces gut motility and increases regurgitation and aspiration risk.
- Transport securely. Use a small box or carrier lined with clean, dry towels. Keep the puppy positioned so the airway is unobstructed, and bring feeding records, weight notes, medications, and any material the puppy has vomited or passed if the clinic requests it.
Do not delay professional care while trying sugar products, home mixtures, antibiotics, or milk replacer. The correct treatment depends on the cause and may require warming under supervision, glucose, fluids, oxygen, diagnostics, or treatment for infection or a congenital disorder.

Do not put a limp puppy directly against a heating pad, use a very hot water bottle, or attempt rapid rewarming. Do not pour milk, water, or sugar solution into the mouth of a puppy that is cold, weak, seizing, or unable to swallow normally. Do not convert clinical resuscitation instructions into a home procedure. The safest immediate contribution is accurate observation, gentle protection from further chilling, and rapid veterinary contact.
What may happen at the emergency clinic
The veterinary team will use the history and examination to decide whether the puppy needs supervised warming, glucose support, fluids, oxygen, diagnostic testing, or treatment directed at infection, a congenital disorder, or another cause. Tell the team what warming or feeding has already been attempted, because this affects risk assessment. A puppy that appears slightly better on arrival still needs evaluation if it stopped nursing, lost weight, or had an abnormal temperature.

| What you observe | Best action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Breathing distress, gasping, blue or pale appearance, collapse, unresponsiveness, seizure, profound weakness, inability to suckle, or a markedly cold puppy | Emergency animal hospital now | These findings can reflect oxygen failure, severe hypoglycemia, hypothermia, or another rapidly fatal condition. |
| Poor nursing, persistent distressed crying, abnormal temperature, vomiting or diarrhea, separation from the litter, or failure to gain weight | Prompt same-day veterinary assessment | Early fading-puppy signs may precede sudden deterioration. |
| Active, responsive puppy that nurses effectively, remains warm within its age range, and gains weight consistently | Routine monitoring with a low threshold to call | Normal behavior and a positive weight trend are reassuring but do not rule out disease. |
If you are uncertain between categories, choose the more urgent option and call. Neonatal signs overlap, and there is no reliable home score that can exclude infection, congenital disease, or rapidly developing hypoglycemia.
Monitoring a litter so deterioration is noticed early
Track weight consistently
Use a gram scale and weigh each puppy on a consistent schedule recommended by your veterinarian. Record the date, time, weight, nursing observations, stool and urine concerns, and any change in behavior. Compare each puppy with its own trend and with littermates; a single measurement is less informative than a falling or stagnant pattern.
Watch the group, not only the sickest puppy
If more than one puppy is weak, cold, crying, or failing to gain weight, tell the veterinarian immediately. A shared problem such as poor milk supply, environmental chilling, infection, or a maternal illness may be affecting the litter. Separate a profoundly weak puppy only as directed, while ensuring it can be kept warm and observed safely.
Check nursing behavior
A healthy neonate should settle after feeding and remain responsive enough to seek the dam. Repeatedly losing the nipple, being pushed away, or sleeping through feeds is not normal just because the puppy is quiet. Note which teats it uses, how long it nurses, and whether the dam allows feeding.
Observe the mother and environment
Include the dam’s health, milk supply, willingness to allow nursing, and any recent birth difficulty in your notes. Record whether the box is dry and free of drafts and whether a puppy is repeatedly separated from the pile. These details can help the veterinarian distinguish an individual problem from a litter-wide or environmental concern.

Emergency triage comes first. If a foster dog is unavailable, VCA identifies a veterinarian-recommended canine milk replacer as the preferred feeding method and gives Esbilac as an example. Milk replacer does not treat respiratory distress, hypothermia, seizures, severe weakness, or another emergency.
Safer bottle-feeding principles
- Ask a veterinarian to demonstrate positioning, volume, frequency, and how to judge swallowing.
- Use a purpose-made puppy nursing bottle. A nipple opening that flows too freely can cause choking or aspiration.
- Never feed a cold, limp, or poorly swallowing puppy without veterinary direction; warming and stabilization may need to occur first.
- Tube feeding requires the correct equipment, training, and technique. Do not improvise it at home.
Changing brands, concentrations, or feeding methods without advice can create additional problems. If an orphaned puppy refuses a feed, becomes weak, coughs during feeding, or develops breathing changes, stop and contact a veterinarian rather than repeatedly trying to push more formula.

Why newborn puppies can decline so fast
During the first two weeks, puppies have immature immune defenses, limited energy stores, and little ability to maintain body temperature or fluid balance. Birth trauma, inadequate nursing, maternal illness or insufficient milk, congenital abnormalities, infection, parasites, and environmental stress can begin the process. Once a puppy stops nursing, hypothermia, dehydration, and hypoglycemia can reinforce one another.
VCA’s “Fading Puppy Syndrome in Dogs,” last updated March 6, 2023, reports that normal pre-weaning losses in dogs, including stillborn puppies, can be up to 30%, with about half of those deaths occurring within the first week. This is a source-reported population figure, not a prediction for an individual litter and not a reason to accept a puppy’s decline as unavoidable.
Common mistakes that cost time
- Waiting for multiple signs: one serious sign can be enough to call.
- Relying on touch alone: a puppy may feel warm while its temperature is abnormal, or feel cool after exposure without the cause being clear.
- Using rapid or direct heat: burns and complications from abrupt rewarming are preventable.
- Forcing milk or sugar: aspiration and delayed treatment can be more dangerous than temporary fasting under veterinary supervision.
- Assuming quiet means comfortable: extreme lethargy may look calmer than crying but is more concerning.
- Comparing only with an adult dog: neonatal temperature and behavior change rapidly with age.
- Waiting for a home remedy to work: improvement that lasts only briefly does not identify or cure the underlying cause.
Questions to have ready for the veterinarian
- How old is the puppy, and was it born at term?
- What was the birth weight and the most recent weight trend?
- When did it last nurse successfully, and from which dam or bottle?
- What temperature was measured, with what thermometer and at what time?
- Has there been vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal urine, coughing, discharge, or trauma?
- Are littermates or the mother showing any changes?
- What warming, feeding, or medication has already been attempted?
Clear answers help the clinic prepare appropriate neonatal support and reduce delays on arrival. If you cannot answer every question, call anyway; missing information should not postpone emergency care.
When a single reassuring sign is not enough
There is no validated home checklist that can certify a newborn puppy is safe to monitor. Infection and congenital disease may progress with few obvious external signs, and a puppy may have a temporarily normal temperature while still failing to nurse or gain weight. If your instinct says the puppy is different from its littermates, call early and describe the change.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my newborn puppy is dying?
You cannot determine that reliably at home. Gasping, collapse, seizures, unresponsiveness, severe weakness, inability to suckle, or a markedly cold puppy require an emergency veterinarian immediately; poor feeding, persistent crying, or no weight gain require prompt assessment.
My newborn puppy feels cold—what should I do?
Call a veterinarian, prevent further chilling, and use only gentle indirect warmth while arranging care. Do not rapidly rewarm, place the puppy directly on a heating pad, or feed a weak chilled puppy unless a veterinarian instructs you.
Why is my newborn puppy crying and not nursing?
Persistent high-pitched crying and failure to nurse can signal hypothermia, low blood sugar, dehydration, infection, inadequate milk, birth problems, or another condition. Contact a veterinarian promptly rather than trying to solve it with force-feeding.

Can I give milk replacer to an emergency puppy?
Milk replacer is used for orphan care when a veterinarian recommends it, but it does not treat breathing trouble, seizures, hypothermia, or profound weakness. Ask a veterinarian about the safest method and timing.
What temperature is dangerous for a newborn puppy?
VCA lists 95–99°F (35–37.2°C) for the first week, 97–100°F (36.1–37.8°C) for weeks two and three, and 100–102°F (37.8–38.9°C) for week four. Below 94°F (34.3°C) can be life-threatening, especially with weakness or poor nursing. Call promptly for any abnormal reading or sick appearance.
Should I tube-feed a weak puppy?
No, not without veterinary instruction and proper training. A weak or chilled puppy may not swallow safely, and milk entering the lungs can cause aspiration pneumonia or death. Contact a veterinarian first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is a puppy that stops crying safe because it is quiet?
Not necessarily. Extreme lethargy and loss of muscle tone can look quieter than distress but are warning signs. Check responsiveness, breathing, temperature, nursing, and weight, and call if the puppy is different from its littermates.
When can I monitor at home instead of going to an emergency hospital?
Only when the puppy is active and responsive, nurses effectively, remains warm within its age-appropriate range, and is gaining weight consistently. Keep monitoring closely and call at the first change; there is no home checklist that rules out serious disease.
The Bottom Line
Act early: breathing trouble, collapse, seizures, unresponsiveness, profound weakness, inability to nurse, or marked chilling call for an emergency veterinarian now. Poor feeding, persistent crying, separation from the litter, abnormal temperature, or stalled weight gain deserve same-day advice. Keep the puppy gently warm, avoid force-feeding and rapid rewarming, and let a veterinary professional guide the next step.
