The rescue told the newspaper it could not take on more dogs until foster homes were available. That is a dated account—not confirmation of the rescue’s capacity today. Anyone considering fostering should check current vacancies and arrangements directly with the rescue.
What PerthNow reported in October 2024
In its 12 October 2024 report, journalist Gabrielle Becerra Mellet quoted Best Friends Animal Rescue founder Jeane Howes saying: “It’s very urgent as we can’t take on any more dogs until we have foster carers for them.” The report located the rescue’s headquarters in the City of Swan and described its focus as elderly and special-needs dogs from across the metropolitan area.

PerthNow said the rescue had dozens of small dogs in its care at the time and had rehomed hundreds of dogs since it began in 2006. Those figures describe the situation reported in 2024; they should not be read as current counts. The story also quoted Howes: “There are so many and we can’t help them all — but each and every one of them is important.”
The report did not establish a foster-carer shortage statistic for Perth or Western Australia as a whole. Its account concerns Best Friends Animal Rescue at that time.

What fostering with Best Friends Animal Rescue involves
The rescue’s foster information describes carers providing a temporary, safe home while a dog waits for a permanent home. A placement may last from about a week to a few months, depending on the dog. The rescue says a prospective carer can discuss an estimated timeframe before agreeing, although the actual duration depends on the individual case.
Foster care can also support dogs that are too young to be rehomed, mothers caring for a litter, dogs recovering from surgery or receiving treatment for a treatable condition, and dogs needing socialisation or behavioural coaching. The rescue says special-care dogs typically go to experienced carers.

What carers generally provide
- A safe home environment with suitable indoor and outdoor space.
- Exercise and reliable transport to veterinary appointments.
- Food in many general foster placements; the rescue’s page says it will provide what a carer is unable to provide, so clarify the specific dog’s costs and supplies before accepting a placement.
The rescue says formal training is not required and describes veterinary treatment, advice and behavioural coaching as support it generally provides. Confirm what support and expenses apply to the particular dog rather than assuming every cost is covered.
Temporary foster or long-term “forever foster”?
Best Friends Animal Rescue describes both temporary fostering and a separate long-term arrangement for dogs that cannot be rehomed because of age or medical conditions. The rescue’s Forever Foster page, dated 13 January 2023, says it pays those dogs’ expenses and manages their nutritional, physiotherapy and veterinary needs; carers provide a home and palliative care. Individual dogs and placements can change, so check availability and terms with the rescue.

|---|---|---|
| Temporary foster | Potentially a week to a few months, depending on the dog; discuss an estimate before agreeing. | Carer provides a safe home, exercise and vet transport. Food is generally provided by the carer; veterinary treatment and advice are generally supported by the rescue. Confirm the case-specific arrangement. |

Could fostering fit your household?
Suitability depends on the dog, not just a carer’s willingness. Best Friends Animal Rescue notes that many dogs need another dog’s company if left alone for extended periods, so working full-time does not automatically rule someone in or out. Discuss the dog’s routine, behaviour, health needs and time alone with the rescue before committing.
If you are considering fostering, ask about expected duration, food and equipment, veterinary costs, transport, emergency support and how the dog may interact with children or other pets in your home. The rescue says foster-to-adopt is possible; ask how that works for a specific placement if adoption is your goal.

How to respond to the appeal
- Check whether carers are currently needed. The critical shortage described in PerthNow’s report was from October 2024. Confirm present capacity with Best Friends Animal Rescue before sharing the appeal as current.
- Ask about the application route and contact details. Use the rescue’s current official information to verify how to apply; do not rely on old listings or assume a particular dog is available.
- Discuss a specific placement before agreeing. Clarify likely duration, care needs, costs, supplies, veterinary support and transport for that dog.
- Prepare only for the dog you are matched with. The rescue identifies exercise as part of fostering, but ask what it supplies and what equipment is appropriate for the dog’s size, behaviour and medical needs before buying anything.
