Robinson said several cats were placed together in individual carriers and that some were sitting in urine and faeces. 6PR reported her account that the man claimed to be homeless and that there may have been three or four cats in each carrier. Robinson also cautioned that “we don’t know the full story.” The reports do not independently verify the homelessness claim or explain why the cats were surrendered. 6PR
How much pressure was the shelter under?
Robinson told PerthNow Cat Haven had reached its capacity of 228 cats at the time of the November 2024 intake. That is a historical figure from the report, not a statement of the shelter’s current capacity. Cat Haven also said it took in more than 8,000 cats and kittens in 2023, which PerthNow described as the organisation’s highest intake in six years. The report attributes these numbers to Cat Haven; it does not present them as independently audited statistics. PerthNow

What happened to the 31 cats afterward?
The PerthNow and 6PR reports do not give a follow-up outcome for the 31 cats, such as whether they were treated, rehomed, or remained at the shelter. They also do not explain the legal or operational rules behind Cat Haven’s intake, so the incident should not be taken as evidence that the shelter had a specific legal duty to accept the cats.
How can people help Cat Haven?
In response to the pressures on cat welfare in Western Australia, Robinson called for people to sterilise cats, support owners who cannot afford sterilisation, and help through fostering, adoption, or donations. She said: “Cat welfare in WA is a community responsibility that must be taken seriously,” and added that Cat Haven could not address stray and abandoned cats alone. PerthNow
