Familiar food and litter can make the first days easier while your cat adjusts.
1. Set up a quiet starter room
Choose a low-traffic room and prepare it before pickup. Include food and water, a litter box, a comfortable resting spot or hiding place, a few toys, and a scratching surface. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine recommends having core supplies ready; the ASPCA advises starting a pet in a home-base room and opening access to the rest of the home gradually.

Transport your cat in a cat carrier rather than carrying it loose. A carrier is useful for the journey home and future veterinary visits; the ASPCA includes one among relevant cat-care items. Check that it closes securely before leaving the adoption site or prior caregiver.

3. Let your cat set the pace
Once you are in the starter room, place the carrier down, open its door, and give the cat time to decide when to come out. Keep the room calm and avoid forcing contact or exploration. When the cat seems comfortable, allow access to more of the home gradually, one area at a time, as the ASPCA recommends.
There is no established universal settling timetable that fits every cat. Use the cat’s behavior and comfort as your guide rather than expecting it to be ready after a fixed number of hours or days.

4. Keep food familiar at first
Ask the shelter, rescue, or previous caregiver what food the cat has been eating. Cornell recommends continuing some of that food initially and changing diets gradually if a transition is needed. Choose a nutritionally complete diet suited to the cat’s life stage, and ask a veterinarian about individual nutritional needs.
5. Make the litter box familiar and accessible
Find out what litter the cat has used and keep it familiar at first when possible. Cornell notes that most, but not all, cats prefer unscented, fine-textured litter. A kitten or a cat with mobility limitations may find a low-entry box easier to use. Keep the box clean and place it away from food and water.

6. Offer a suitable scratching surface
Scratching is normal marking behavior, so provide an appropriate place for it from the start. Match the surface to the cat’s apparent preference: a vertical post for a cat that scratches upright, or a horizontal scratcher for one that scratches floors. Cornell recommends considering both orientation and material when choosing an alternative.
7. Check the home for hazards
Before opening more rooms, look for hazards at the cat’s level. The ASPCA recommends securing cords, blocking places where a pet could become trapped, checking window screens, removing poisonous plants, and checking for pest-control poison traps. Adapt the check to your home, including rooms the cat will be allowed into.

8. Arrange an early veterinary examination
Ask the shelter, rescue, or prior caregiver for the cat’s health, vaccination, nutrition, and parasite-control history. Cornell recommends having a new cat checked by a veterinarian as soon as possible after coming home. Use the appointment to review the records and agree on a preventive-care plan for this cat; local rules and recommendations can vary.

9. Introduce resident cats gradually
If you have other cats, begin with separation rather than immediate face-to-face contact. When the newcomer’s health history is unknown, Cornell advises keeping it separate from resident cats until a veterinarian has examined it. American Humane Society recommends gradual, step-by-step introductions, including exchanging familiar bedding so the cats can become accustomed to one another’s scent.

Proceed at the cats’ pace instead of relying on a fixed introduction schedule.
10. Check identification information
Ask whether the cat has an ID tag or microchip, and confirm that the contact details are current. The ASPCA identifies tags and implanted microchips as ways to help a lost cat be returned to its caregiver.
