How to Help an Overweight Cat Lose Weight Safely: 10 Tips

Start with a veterinary check, then use measured portions, coordinated feeding, suitable enrichment, and regular monitoring to help an overweight cat lose weight safely.

If you think your cat may be carrying extra weight, start with a veterinary appointment—not a smaller food bowl. Your veterinarian can assess body condition, check for health concerns, and set a safe target and feeding plan. Sudden food restriction can be dangerous for cats.

How can I tell if my cat is overweight?

Body weight alone does not show whether a cat is at a healthy size. A veterinarian can assess body condition using both sight and touch, then confirm whether weight loss is appropriate. At home, look for cues to discuss at the appointment: from above, a healthy waist may be visible behind the ribs; from the side, the abdomen may tuck up rather than hang level with the chest. You should be able to feel the ribs beneath a light covering of fat, without pressing hard. These observations are prompts, not a diagnosis. The FDA’s guide to assessing pet weight recommends working with a veterinarian.

How can I help my cat lose weight safely? Ten tips

1. Ask your veterinarian for a body-condition and health assessment

Book a check before changing portions or food. Excess weight is associated with conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and liver disease, but those associations do not predict what will happen to an individual cat. A veterinary exam can help distinguish excess body fat from other causes of a change in shape or weight and identify any health issues that affect the plan. AAHA’s weight-loss guidance treats veterinary input as the starting point.

2. Agree on a target and a safe pace

Ask the veterinarian what your cat’s target weight is, how quickly to work toward it, and when to check in. AAHA’s 2024 consumer guidance recommends a maximum loss rate of 1% to 2% of body weight per week; your veterinarian may set a slower pace or a different plan for your cat. Rapid weight loss and sudden starvation can put cats at risk of hepatic lipidosis, a serious liver condition. Do not try to speed progress by sharply cutting food.

3. Measure every meal

Use the portion and schedule agreed with the veterinarian, and measure the food rather than estimating by eye. If the household uses a measuring cup, keep it consistent; a gram scale can make portions easier to reproduce. Follow the product’s feeding guidance only as a starting point for discussion: an individual cat’s calorie needs and suitable portions require veterinary advice.

4. Count treats and coordinate everyone who feeds the cat

Include treats, table scraps, food used for medication, and any snacks given by other household members in the daily plan. Agree on who feeds the cat and how much each person may give. You can set aside a portion of the cat’s measured daily food for rewards, if that fits the veterinarian’s plan, rather than adding untracked extras.

5. Review free-feeding if it leads to extra intake

Food left out all day can make it difficult to know how much a cat actually eats, especially in a multi-cat home. If free-feeding is contributing to excess intake, ask the veterinarian about a measured meal schedule or another approach that lets you track consumption without disrupting the cat’s care. A change in feeding routine should account for the cat’s health and household circumstances.

6. Ask whether a therapeutic weight-management diet is appropriate

Simply feeding much less of a regular maintenance food may not provide enough vitamins and minerals. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guidelines caution that calorie restriction of maintenance food can create nutrient deficiencies; therapeutic weight-loss diets are formulated to provide nutrients at reduced calorie levels. Ask the veterinarian whether such a diet suits your cat and how to provide it at the planned intake. Do not choose a diet solely because it is marketed for weight control.

7. Transition food with veterinary guidance

If the plan involves a new food, ask how to make the change and what to do if your cat refuses it or develops digestive symptoms. There is no single transition duration that fits every cat and diet. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions rather than making an abrupt switch or allowing a cat to go without eating.

8. Add activity and enrichment your cat can manage

Short, engaging play and food-based enrichment can support a weight-management plan, but they do not replace measured feeding or veterinary guidance. Try activities suited to your cat’s mobility and interest, such as a supervised wand-toy session or a food puzzle. Increase activity gradually, especially if your cat is older or has joint or other health problems. A 2025 veterinary practice paper supports food puzzles as enrichment; it does not establish that a puzzle by itself causes weight loss.

9. Weigh your cat and record progress

Follow the check-in schedule set by the veterinarian and keep a simple record of weight, food portions, treats, and relevant changes in appetite or behavior. For home weighing, Cornell recommends using a baby scale during a gradual weight-loss plan; a veterinary team can advise on a suitable method if your cat will not stay still or the readings are inconsistent. Bring the record to check-ins so the plan can be adjusted using actual progress rather than guesswork.

10. Contact the veterinarian if appetite changes or weight loss is unexpectedly fast

Do not wait for the next routine check if your cat stops eating, eats substantially less, or loses weight faster than the agreed pace. Contact the veterinary clinic promptly for advice. Loss of appetite or unexpectedly rapid weight loss can signal a problem and should not be treated as proof that the plan is working.

What should a weight-management plan cover?

Before leaving the appointment, make sure you understand the target, feeding instructions, and follow-up plan. A useful plan should answer these questions:

  • What body-condition assessment and target weight are appropriate for this cat?
  • What food, daily amount, and meal routine should the household use?
  • How should treats and food puzzles fit into the plan?
  • When should the cat be weighed or rechecked, and what rate of loss is acceptable?
  • What changes in appetite, behavior, or weight should prompt an earlier call?

There is no universal calorie target, food choice, exercise schedule, or food-transition timeline for all cats. The right plan depends on the individual cat and should be adjusted with veterinary guidance. AAHA’s owner guidance, the FDA’s body-condition cues, Cornell’s obesity guidance, and the 2021 AAHA/AAFP feline life-stage guidelines provide further context.
