Corn can be one ingredient in some formulated fish feeds, but cracked corn by itself is not established as nutritionally complete, and fish needs vary by species and life stage. For pond fish, use a commercial feed formulated for the fish you keep and feed only what they consume promptly.
What corn can—and cannot—do in fish food
Corn has a limited role as an ingredient in some formulated diets. The University of Florida IFAS Extension explains that cooked carbohydrates from corn, wheat, and similar flours can provide relatively inexpensive energy and may spare protein from being used for energy. NOAA Fisheries also identifies corn among plant ingredients that may be included in feeds for herbivorous fish.

That ingredient-level use is not a recommendation to feed cracked corn on its own. UF/IFAS notes that, with few exceptions, a single food is neither complete nor balanced. NOAA emphasizes that nutritional needs differ among species and that formulated feeds are designed to provide essential nutrients. A feed ingredient’s usefulness in a carefully balanced recipe does not make it a suitable stand-alone food.
Why cracked corn is not a reliable routine diet
Cracked corn alone has not been established as a complete diet for fish. The sources do not provide a universal serving size or preparation method—such as cooking or soaking—for feeding it directly across species. UF/IFAS discusses cooked corn flour in the context of feed formulation, not as a do-it-yourself ration or proof that whole cracked kernels are appropriate.

For feed design, NOAA says nutritionists account for about 40 essential nutrients. That is general context about formulating fish feeds, not a measure of cracked corn’s benefits or a result from a cracked-corn feeding trial.
What to feed pond fish instead
Choose a commercial feed formulated for fish and appropriate to the species or life stage you keep. The NC State Extension Pond Management Guide recommends fish-specific commercial feed. Its guidance recognizes both floating and sinking formats; floating feed can make it easier to observe feeding and minimize waste.

- Check the fit: Select a formulation intended for your fish and their life stage rather than assuming one feed suits every species.
- Choose a visible format when useful: Floating feed lets you watch how much fish eat. Sinking feed may also be available, but it is harder to monitor from the surface.
- Portion carefully: Feed only what fish consume in about 10–15 minutes, following NC State Extension’s pond guidance.
An automatic or demand feeder may help maintain a regular pond-feeding program, but it does not replace a suitable formulation or portion control.

Manage leftovers and avoid spoiled feed
Uneaten feed can decompose and consume oxygen in the water. NC State Extension warns that excessive feeding can contribute to fish kills, so do not keep adding food when fish have stopped eating or leave excess feed to break down in the pond. Moldy feed should not be used; NC State Extension warns that it may be toxic to fish.

This is guidance about contaminated ingredients in formulated feed, with a catfish focus; it does not establish that every cracked-corn kernel is toxic to every fish.
