Perth Zoo visitors might have been able to glimpse a baby koala beginning to emerge from its mother’s pouch, according to a PerthNow report published on 18 June 2025. The joey was seven months old, and keepers had recently seen it eating eucalyptus leaves. The report’s viewing advice and keeper-talk schedule date from June 2025 and are not confirmed as current.
What PerthNow reported about the joey
The joey was born to Mindjil, a first-time mother, and Laurie. The report said both parents had joined Perth Zoo the previous year through a regionally coordinated koala breeding program. It did not give the joey an exact birth date or name.

At seven months old, the joey was beginning to venture out of Mindjil’s pouch. Perth Zoo Australian fauna keeper Bronte Winterbottom said keepers had first seen it eating eucalyptus leaves the previous week, describing the moment as it “being a proper koala instead of just nursing off mum.”

How visitors were advised to try to see it
PerthNow said the best chance to see the joey was at a free koala keeper talk listed for 3 p.m. four times a week. That is the schedule reported in June 2025, not a verified current timetable. The joey’s visibility can also change as it develops and spends time in or out of the pouch.
Before planning a visit around the talk, check Perth Zoo’s current visitor information directly for the schedule and any animal-viewing updates. The 2025 report alone cannot confirm whether the talk still runs at that time or whether the joey is currently visible.
