Perth Zoo announced on 19 December 2025 that a Little Penguin chick had hatched at the zoo for the first time in 10 years. The chick’s parents are Shrimp and Charlie, and Perth Zoo described the birth as a milestone for a regional breeding program.
What Perth Zoo reported about the chick
In its 19 December 2025 announcement, Perth Zoo said the chick weighed just over 1,200 grams and was being weighed weekly. The zoo described the chick as showing positive signs in its first weeks and as above average weight for a Little Penguin chick; the announcement did not specify the comparison group or method.

The chick joined a colony of 15 Little Penguins in the zoo’s care. That figure describes Perth Zoo’s colony, not the number of penguins living in the wild.

Its sex had not yet been established
When Perth Zoo published the announcement, staff had not established the chick’s sex. The zoo said they planned to use blood and feather samples. No result is confirmed by that announcement.

Why the hatch matters to the breeding program
Perth Zoo said its regional breeding program aims to support Little Penguin populations in Western Australia and maintain a healthy, genetically diverse insurance population for the species. The zoo has also described Western Australian penguins as genetically distinct from east-coast counterparts, with different breeding and moulting seasons.
The program’s stated purpose is broader than this single birth: the announcement does not establish that this chick will directly increase a wild population. Earlier Perth Zoo reporting dated 26 August 2022 described collaboration with Western Australian wildlife authorities on breeding support and preserving the distinct genetic provenance of WA birds. That account offers historical context, not confirmation of the partners or protocol for the 2025 hatch.

Can visitors see the penguin chick?
Perth Zoo’s December 2025 announcement said visitors might be able to spot the chick after it shed its down, at around 10 weeks old. It named the daily 10 a.m. free Penguin Keeper Talk as the best chance to see it at that time. Those were prospective details in the 2025 announcement, not a current schedule or confirmation that the chick is visible now. Check Perth Zoo’s official website for current visit information before planning around a talk or expecting to see the chick.
Little Penguins at Perth Zoo
Perth Zoo’s species profile describes Little Penguins as the smallest penguin species and the only penguin species to live permanently in Australian waters. They eat fish and squid and use coastal and offshore habitats. The zoo profile lists threats including habitat disturbance, overfishing, fishing gear, pollution and introduced land predators; it is the zoo’s species overview, rather than an independent current conservation assessment.

The zoo’s Penguin Plunge exhibit also supports research: Perth Zoo says it uses security cameras and temperature and humidity loggers in burrows to investigate reproduction, behaviour and nest-box conditions. The profile does not say those methods caused or guaranteed this hatch.
