Scale number, size, type, and body coverage vary by species, and some fish have no scales at all. To get a meaningful count, you need to name the species and clarify whether you mean a standard identification count or every scale on the body.
Do all fish have scales?
No. The Australian Museum identifies clingfishes (family Gobiesocidae) as scaleless; their bodies are protected by a thick mucus layer. Fish also vary in how much of the body is covered, so even among scaled species there is no one count for “a fish.” Australian Museum: Fish scales

Why is there no standard number?
Fish vary in scale presence, type, size, and distribution. The Australian Museum describes four main kinds—placoid, cosmoid, ganoid, and cycloid or ctenoid—with many variations. Some flatfishes, for example, can have ctenoid scales on the eyed side and cycloid scales on the blind side; in some species, scale type also differs by sex.

Scale size varies too: the Indian Mahseer (Tor tor) can have scales more than 10 cm long, according to the Australian Museum. The museum reported more than 32,000 described fish species and more than 28,000 bony fish species in 2023. Sharks, skates, and rays have a different kind of scale
Cartilaginous fishes have placoid scales, also called denticles. Fisheries and Oceans Canada notes that their number and form vary widely by species. Sharks have tiny, overlapping denticles over most of the body, while skates and rays often have rows of larger denticles or thorns. Fisheries and Oceans Canada: External anatomy
Cycloid and ctenoid scales
These scales are common in many bony fishes. Cycloid scales have a smooth edge, while ctenoid scales have comb-like projections; both overlap and allow flexibility. Their presence and arrangement vary by species. Australian Museum: Cycloid and Ctenoid Scales

How do scientists count fish scales?
For identification, ichthyologists may count scales along a particular body feature, such as the lateral line. This is a defined measurement used to help distinguish species—not a count of every scale covering the fish. Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension describes lateral-line scale counts as one tool for freshwater fish identification. So if you need a precise count, specify the species and the counting method. Without those details, a number cannot be compared reliably between fish.

Are growth rings on scales the same as counting scales?
No. Growth marks on a scale may help estimate a fish’s age in some species, but counting those marks is different from counting scales. Scales can erode, shed, or regenerate, which can make an age estimate inaccurate or too low. NOAA says the appropriate aging structure and method should be evaluated species by species. Scale number and scale age are also distinct: a fish can grow larger without adding scales under the general pattern described by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, and damaged or missing scales can regrow.
