Let them hide or seek your company; do not punish or force them into a crate. For severe or worsening fear, ask your veterinarian about a plan before the next storm.
How can I calm my dog during a thunderstorm?
Start with safety and a place your dog already finds comfortable. Storm fear may begin before the first thunderclap: dogs can react to a range of storm-associated cues, and signs include trembling, panting, pacing, drooling, hiding, vocalizing, digging, and attempts to escape. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine recommends preparing a quiet retreat and offering calm support.

- Guide them to a familiar retreat. Choose a quiet room away from outside noise, ideally with few windows, comfortable bedding, and a place to hide. Let your dog choose where to settle if that spot is safe.
- Stay calm and available. Sit nearby and offer gentle reassurance or contact if your dog seeks it. Do not scold, punish, or force interaction. Punishment can add distress rather than teach a dog to feel safe.
- Reduce competing noise. White noise or music may mask some sound. A fan can also add background noise, but no consumer device should be expected to block every storm cue.
- Offer food enrichment only if they can engage. A long-lasting food toy or lick mat may help a dog who is still comfortable enough to eat. A dog in severe panic may ignore food; do not insist.
Should I comfort my dog or ignore them?
Calmly comforting a frightened dog is appropriate. You do not need to ignore trembling, hiding, or a dog who comes to you for reassurance. Keep your voice and movements relaxed, and let the dog choose whether to stay close or retreat. Avoid punishment: fear is not misbehavior, and punishing it can increase distress.
What should I do before the next storm?
Preparation reduces avoidable risk. Exercise and bathroom breaks are best handled before the storm arrives, while the dog is still comfortable going outside. Check that doors, gates, and yard access are secure, and confirm that collar identification and microchip contact details are current in case your dog bolts.

Will a crate, thunder shirt, or other product help?
These options are supports, not guaranteed treatments. Choose only what your dog already tolerates or can comfortably try; forcing unfamiliar equipment or confinement during a storm may make the situation worse.
| Option | When it may help | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Crate or safe room | A crate may be a retreat if the dog is already accustomed to it and treats it as safe. A quiet room can provide a familiar place to settle. | Do not introduce or force crate confinement during a storm; an unfamiliar crate may increase distress or risk. |
| White noise or music | May help mask some outside noise in a quiet retreat. | It cannot be assumed to block every storm-associated cue. |
| Food toy or lick mat | May provide enrichment if the dog is calm enough to eat. | Not a cure, and it may be ignored during severe panic. |
| Pressure wrap | May be worth trying as one part of a broader plan; individual responses vary. | It is an optional adjunct, not an established solution for every dog. |
| Pheromone product | May be considered as an adjunct in appropriate cases. | A small placebo-controlled study involving 24 beagles reported lower fear and anxiety scores with dog-appeasing pheromone collars than placebo during a laboratory thunderstorm simulation. That result does not establish that every dog will benefit in a home storm. Study record on PubMed. |
| Veterinary medication | May be useful for significant fear as part of an individualized veterinary plan. | Choice, suitability, dose, and timing must come from a veterinarian. Do not give human medication or an unsupervised dose. |
Can training reduce thunder fear?
Gradual desensitization and counterconditioning may help some dogs when practiced outside storm season. The idea is to pair a storm recording played at a barely audible, non-distressing level with a reward or relaxation, then increase the sound gradually only while the dog remains calm.

- Begin when storms are unlikely, in a quiet setting where your dog can relax.
- Play a storm recording so softly that your dog shows no signs of fear, and pair it with something positive or a practiced relaxation cue.
- Increase volume in small steps over repeated sessions only if your dog remains comfortable. If they show distress, stop and return to an easier level another time.
- Ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for help if training triggers fear or progress stalls.
Regular practice matters, and progress may take several weeks, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Recordings cannot fully reproduce a real storm’s darkening sky, rain, flashes, or other context, so training with sound alone may not be enough. The British Small Animal Veterinary Association also advises gradual desensitization and counterconditioning for noise fears.

When should I ask a veterinarian about thunder anxiety?
Contact your veterinarian if the fear is severe, worsening, unpredictable, or hard to manage; if your dog cannot settle or accept food; if escape attempts recur; or if the problem begins in an older dog. Pain and other medical or behavioral conditions can contribute to noise aversion, so an assessment can help identify what is driving the change. A veterinarian can discuss an individualized treatment plan and whether referral to a veterinary behaviorist is appropriate.

Persistent panting or trembling that does not resolve, inability to settle, frantic destruction aimed at exits, and self-injury are signs of severe phobia described by Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital. If your dog is injured, secure them and contact a veterinarian promptly; broken nails, bloody paws, or facial abrasions from impacts need urgent veterinary attention.
