For a safer public outing, choose a place that suits your dog, check its rules, use a leash unless off-leash activity is clearly allowed, and stay attentive to your dog and nearby people and animals. Bring waste bags; add water and a bowl for longer or warm-weather trips. If your dog seems uncomfortable or an interaction becomes unsafe, create space or leave.
Choose an outing your dog can handle
A sidewalk walk, dog-friendly venue, fenced dog park and designated off-leash area each bring different demands. Before you go, consider whether your dog is healthy, comfortable around unfamiliar people and dogs, and able to respond to basic cues when distracted. Also consider how crowded the place is, whether you can supervise closely, and whether there is an easy way to step away.

A dog park is not automatically a good fit. Dogs that are shy, nervous, reactive, aggressive, ill or inclined to guard food or toys may be better off with a quieter activity. The American Kennel Club recommends assessing your individual dog, watching body language and leaving if play becomes too rough or anyone seems uncomfortable. Check posted rules at the specific park: AKC dog-park guidance.

CDC says responsible ownership includes using a leash in public to help prevent dog bites: CDC guidance on dogs. Leash requirements, permitted lengths and off-leash areas vary by local ordinance and venue, so check signs and local rules rather than assuming one policy applies everywhere. Off-leash activity is appropriate only where it is clearly permitted and your dog can respond reliably around distractions. The AKC also recommends weighing the place, situation and dog before choosing off-leash activity: AKC off-leash guidance.

Prepare supplies for the trip
For an ordinary short walk, a leash and waste bags are practical basics. Longer outings and warm weather call for water, a bowl and breaks. CDC’s broader pet-travel list includes food, grooming supplies, medication and travel documents such as proof of rabies vaccination; bring what fits the trip and destination rather than treating every item as necessary for every walk. See CDC pet-travel safety guidance.
- Short walk: Leash and waste bags.
- Longer or warm-weather outing: Add water and a bowl, and plan places to pause in shade.
- Travel or venue-specific requirements: Check what documents, medication or other supplies the destination requires.
Protect your dog from heat and hot surfaces
Plan walks for cooler hours, favor shade or grass, avoid hot asphalt and take breaks. Bring enough water for both you and your dog. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that overweight pets and short-nosed breeds face higher risk from warm-weather exercise; ask your veterinarian about your dog’s individual needs. See AVMA warm-weather pet safety advice.

Hot pavement can burn paw pads and contribute to heat-related illness. Changing the route or time is the first choice; dog shoes or all-terrain boots are an optional alternative for some situations, and a dog may need time to adjust to wearing them. The AKC’s page, updated March 30, 2026, discusses pavement and paw safety: AKC hot-pavement guidance.

Manage encounters and know when to leave
Do not approach unfamiliar dogs. If an unfamiliar dog comes toward you, CDC advises remaining still and calm. Keep your own dog close enough to manage, watch how interactions develop and make space rather than forcing a greeting. At a dog park, stay engaged instead of relying on other handlers to supervise; intervene when play becomes too rough and leave if the dogs are uncomfortable or you cannot keep the situation under control.

ADA Title III has a specific rule for service animals at covered public accommodations: the animal generally must use a harness, leash or tether. An exception applies if the handler cannot use one because of a disability or if it would interfere with the animal’s safe, effective work; in that case, the animal must otherwise remain under effective control. This is a rule for service animals in covered settings, not a general pet-access rule. See the U.S. Department of Justice Title III regulations.
