Start preparing before your first full workday away: restore the routine your pet will experience, practice brief departures, and extend them only while your pet remains relaxed. A safe resting place and familiar enrichment can help, but persistent or severe distress calls for veterinary guidance.
Start before your work schedule resumes
A sudden increase in time alone can be hard for some pets. Begin adjusting the day’s rhythm and practicing separation before your schedule changes, rather than making the first full workday the first long absence. The AVMA return-to-work handout recommends gradually reintroducing workday routines; the ASPCA also advises matching interaction and play to the routine ahead.

Rebuild the workday routine
Shift waking, meals, walks, play, exercise, training, and toileting toward the times they will happen once you are back at work. Keep daily activity and attention compatible with that future schedule so the change is not an abrupt removal of the interaction your pet has come to expect.
Practice departures gradually
- Begin with a brief absence your pet can manage without becoming distressed.
- Return while your pet is still calm, and repeat short practices regularly.
- Increase the time away in small steps only when your pet remains relaxed. If distress appears, shorten the next absence and rebuild more slowly.
Use departure cues as part of practice so they become familiar within the routine. If even very brief departures cause distress, stop the exercises and contact a veterinary professional rather than pushing through. The ASPCA’s separation-anxiety guidance and VCA’s guidance describe gradual behavior work and the need to tailor it to the individual animal.

Set up a familiar, safe space
Choose a comfortable resting area where your pet can settle safely. If you plan to use a crate, make it rewarding and reintroduce it for short periods before relying on it during a workday. Confinement is not automatically the right solution: a pet who becomes distressed in a crate may need a different arrangement. The VCA explains why separation-related distress needs an individualized plan.
Use enrichment as support, not treatment
A familiar food puzzle, stuffed toy, or suitable long-lasting treat may occupy some pets. Check that an item is safe for your individual pet and that they already know how to use it. Some anxious dogs will not eat while alone, so a toy cannot substitute for gradual practice or care when distress is significant. An automatic feeder may be convenient, but it does not replace an appropriate feeding and care schedule.

Watch for signs of distress
Behavior that happens specifically during absences may signal that the pace is too challenging. Watch for barking, howling or yowling; chewing, digging or clawing; house soiling; pacing or salivation; refusing food; withdrawal; over-grooming; or self-injury. A phone or home camera can help show what happens after you leave. Note when signs begin and what preceded them, then share the observations with your veterinary team.

Respond by making the next step easier
If your pet becomes distressed, reduce the length of absences and slow the progression. Do not punish behavior that may be anxiety-related. Some pets become more distressed with continued departure practice; if brief absences are not tolerable, stop the exercises and seek professional advice. A veterinarian can assess the problem and discuss behavior support, management, or whether referral to a veterinary behaviorist is appropriate.

A dog walker, pet sitter, or daycare may help bridge the transition if your dog needs company or a midday break. Other temporary arrangements can include working from home or having a trusted person stay with the pet. Choose based on your pet’s response, health, age, behavior, and need for supervision: a puzzle or feeder offers enrichment, while a person or daycare provides care and company. For persistent or severe distress, involve a veterinarian in deciding what arrangement is suitable.
